Your quote from the creator of the Lapidary Journal, was exceptional! How wonderful and beautiful this world would be, if more people, thought like him! How wonderful! And thank you for that! Especially after what you divulged about MK Diamond. How disappointing can one company be? And after so many years, to do this now? So disappointing. You know it's sad, and I'm usually so not surprised when a person or persons can feel good about doing this to their customers, their employees and their landlord and creditors.... But I started to regain some faith back, in the human race, and then you hear something like this, and you are right back at 0! But then again there is people like you. Your genuine, honest, generous and true. You have had the opportunity over the years to sell out but you haven't and I'm honored and privileged to call you a friend. Thank you! As for your opal, I haven't a clue. I received a few pieces of green opal with swirly red lines in it from a friend in Washington. All I know is it's really beautiful. I've read all the other comments and many seem plausible. Thanks for this time to hang out in the shop and talk rocks! As always, another successful SNS! Thanks Jared!❤

I wonder if rather than forming around a core, the opal was formed when sediments deposited were acted upon by forces like subsurface erosion or seismic activity before solidifying. I have hopes for renewed interest domestic lapidary manufacturing. If a machine is compact enough for small workspaces and easily transported, that would be well suited to the modern American lapidarist. That said, I doubt any US manufacturer could produce every component and sell at prices we would consider affordable.

Well that explains my experience with MK over the last year. I ordered a blade on 4/18/23. On 5/9/23 I emailed to ask about the order and received a reply that day saying "This blade should be shipping by the end of the month." I emailed again on 6/22/23 and received a reply that day saying "Sorry for the delay. They will be available mid July." I emailed again 8/9/23 and received a reply that day saying "Sorry for the delay these will be shipping in the next 2-3 weeks." And then I received an email 11/7/23 telling me my order was cancelled and would be refunded. At least the refund actually showed up.

Shame isn't it. Greed I'd say. My Lortone tumbler really failed me. I bought a 33B a double barrel tumbler. It could not handle the double barrels, no matter what adjustments you made. So I had to put half into each which made it a single barrel tumbler. As a tumbler knows they don't tumble the same. So I ended up using only one. But being a double tumbler you needed the other barrel on it to keep it in place. Then the belt went and had to buy more at premium prices plus freight all the way to Tasmania. I was persistent and tumbled what I had, Tasmanian agates and stictite in serpentine. I called it quits after going through many belts and it was not even able to handle one barrel anymore. I've had many experienced tumblers look at it and help me. They all reckon it was a lemon. I really don't know where to go since they are the industry standard and heard much negative reviews for harbour freight which is considerably cheaper. There I finally vented. I feel better now!

I built myself a tumbler I used plumbing pipe to make the barrel. It’s loud, but it never fails It has a big motor and 3/4” drive I bought a dble barrel second hand of the kind you have so the big one could do grinding and the smaller for polish The small tumbler won’t turn if I have a normal quantity of rocks Then I just used one small tumbler It keeps quitting Worried the motor will cave So now I’m putting the small drum on the big unit Sigh….. Seems under powered

“If everything around you seems dark, look again, you may be the light." I believe you are one of those thought leaders in the lapidary/ Rockhounding world. "Don't lick rocks" may not be as profound as "deathless beauty," but it is what the current climate calls for. It is what human beans need to hear today. 😬 Seriously though, it's very disappointing to hear about the immoral actions of so many people across the world, but there are also many beautifully ordinary people doing great things, in general & in the lapidary world. We have been conditioned to focus on the negative aspects of *everything,* but we just need to remind ourselves of all the countless people who choose to serve, share knowledge & uplift fellow rock peeps. Keep on crushin' it, my friend.

Not uncommon to see that kind of banding in opal. I buy a fair amount of precious rough-opal (that I cut into gems) and find odd banding frequently. Just consider how opal forms. Water percolates through silica rich soil until it finds a void. Then, over millennia, small amounts of opal are laid down. Curved void (e.g. void created by decomposed branch) leads to curved layers. Creation is often very dependent on rainfall and other sources of seasonal water deposition. I'm more curious how crystal opal forms with no obvious layers.

It seems like we have a convergence of Lapidary supply companies happening. I believe Ameritool is now owned by Covington and others like MK Diamond are disappearing and other companies like HP and Kingsley North are picking up the slack. I personally have had a poor experience with Cutting Edge Supply, decent experience with Covington, and good experience with Kingsley North and HP. Both KN and HP seem to be relatively easy to work with and try to do right by their customers. Covington needs a new website and back office system in my humble opinion. I'm waiting on a piece of equipment from HP for a couple months, but it's because a supplier messed up the design of their pumps and HP doesn't want to send me a garbage pump with my order. I don't like waiting, but hey, I'd rather have quality than have to deal with a pump causing me headaches.

So I am guilty as charged. I've worked very hard to keep local support local and the lapidary communities (slab'asaurus for example)however I am one of the many that keep being burned by smaller lapidary firms. I recently came across a power fist Tumbler for $50 at our Canadian Princess Auto. The barrel alone is worth $50 at every other place I look at and the Tumbler i bought has been going non-stop for 8 months with great results so I have bought six more and they're all working fabulously. So for the price of $300 I have 6 tumblers rather than one lapidary tumbler and even if I get a year out of them I still have barrels I can use on my home built tumbler I plan on making one day......

It reminds me of when Lortone which was a great company during the years in Seattle employing real machinists ,moved to Mukilteo and suddenly it seemed like street people were working in place of journeyman machinists and the quality became garbage. The quality control at Diamond Pacific is not what it once was also. I guess this makes room for new producers with new ideas. Corporate death without dignity .

The band is opalized wood "A treasure unique to Washington is opalized wood specimens. When wood buries into soil, mineralized water and low oxygen create a fascinating process called permineralization. Rather than decomposing, silica preserves the wood tissues, transforming them into opalized wood fossils. Besides these remarkable treasures, you can also find common opal in Washington, although production levels are minimal, despite the demand and interest. Washington Opals are rare and elusive but can be found in the following regions: • Whelan - the first US location to unearth American opals! • The Yakima River in Sunnyside • Wind River in Skamania County • Greenwater River in King County"

I have to comment here. My company name is Cutting Edge Diamond Tools. I’m in Arizona and I am NOT related to Cutting Edge Supply. Just an unfortunately similar name. I have access to the lapidary blades that MK labeled as their own. I also have connections with former engineers and machinists from MK that can make most needed replacement parts. I also have a warning about the person responsible for the demise of MK. He is now Alameda Supply and I feel it’s important for everyone to know.

My question regarding the piece of opal is this: what kind of minerals that are within the region that the opal was created is denser and/or stronger than the opal? Do you think there was possibly some sort of something pressing the opal around that harder piece of mineral, creating the curvature? Also, how many years could each layer be individually? That piece has some history or story to it that is quite unique, and now I too am curious about it. Have you considered taking it into a college or institute that studies geology so they can take a deeper look into that specimen? To be honest, if I had that exact piece, I would highly consider taking to to the college near where I live, Oregon State University and let them look it over. I bet either Gonzaga or Washington State University has the ability to answer those questions pretty accurately if given the chance. :-) Love the video, hate MK, need more reliability indeed!!!

This opal was discovered by me, in Spokane Washington, and it's coming out of Basalt. So currently I have access to some more analytical tools for determining the elemental makeup of the specimen, but it's a bit of a drive for me to get to, so it needs to wait. I wish Gonzaga or EWU had good labs that were open to doing work on things for the community, but sadly, they do not.

Hi Jared, another interesting rant. It’s funny some people in Oz rave on about the MK blades but I was not overly impressed by them and ended up purchasing “ Chinese” made blades for my saw simply based on my budget. I would have bought quality Australian blades if I could have but unfortunately they were cost prohibitive. Regarding that opal, it likely broke off from a bigger chunk that looked like a big white egg. Ive seen a lot of the unbroken egg shaped chunks (I might even still have a few), they are often extremely well shaped and green on the inside with spherical bands of different colors like that. The opal deposits resulting from the missoula floods have a lot of colors and patterns in general as much of it is opalized wood

When you have a sizeable offsite rock collection it's not easy to quickly search =/. They also sit outside and the green opal likes to shatter in cold weather. There's a diatomaceous earth mine that actually digs up huge quantities of these opals (thats why these eggs are usually white on the outside), but getting access is the hard part. The mine just buries it as waste product.

@toonshader1490
@toonshader1490 3 ай бұрын
@@BillyBoulderThe gist of it is that the floods created a giant log jam that was later covered in sediments and volcanic material. This resulted in a lot of petrified wood, creating areas like the ginkgo petrified forest. Interestingly, only a few miles away, large chunks of this log jam became opalized as well. I don't have an answer for the candy like colors/patterns the opal often has, but I assume its due to differences in the various organic material that was petrified and hydrated (opal is hydrated silica). The well intact specimens of opalized wood often seem to be black with brown or whitish rings, but I think that's just because the black opal holds up better. The green color opal in this video is the most brittle of the colors, except for the yellow stuff which is like a dense powder more than a rock. Alas, youtube comments don't allow pictures =/

Thanks as always for sharing sir! Much appreciated~ So it's sad to hear what happened with MK Diamond but my cynical side cannot help but shrug at yet another group of greedy individuals taking advantage of a situation to enrich themselves to the detriment of many others. SAD Day in Lapidary~😔😔 No idea on the opal truly.🤔One guess I made looking at it was that it may have layered opposite of what I originally perceived with partially cooled material (the rounded stuff with the brown stuff being the top originally) then overfilled by a lot more of a different color (the thick green layer), the weight of which causes shifting in the below layers which may have been cooler but were still slightly malleable causing the shaping you showed?🤨🤨 Im imagining it was like layers of taffy with the lower layers cooler and less liquid but still malleable that then are pushed down with the weight of the heaver top layer creating swirling patterns?????? I've seen crazy and unbelievable patterns in jaspers I just cannot comprehend any logical means of their creation. I have lotsa questions in life with fewer answers but keep learning stuff~ Great slab of Willemite/Calcite from Franklin, NJ. Thanks again for sharing!

Yeah long time MK not paying rent lol. The VP was driving the business into the ground way prior to COVID. I'm one of probably dozens of independent sales reps for the company that was stiffed commissions. MIne was probably close to 20K and no legal recourse even while their doors were open. The money just wasn't there for years. Relief money probably should be looked into. I did not handle the lapidary but MK had not made blades for probably 20 years. That's good new for you guys! Look up General Tool CA and see if they can point you in the right direction as they sell the blades to the "manufacturers" in the states. Barranca was the same address as MK so they are gone as well. Gran Quartz would be a better option than Harbor Freight to lean on to source this for you.

That's just the nature of things, plenty of lapidary companies existed before Lortone and when they started they copied those companies that already existed. The designs are so simple that It's hard not to copy each other, I mean, if you were to design an autofeed slab saw from scratch right now it would likely look like a clone of something that already exists. Maybe sometime I should show some of the really old designs of machines on a video, perhaps a timeline would be helpful to see. I do wish we had better options available, but as it stands now, HP is just about the only company making new lapidary machines that are within the budgets of most people. Diamond Pacific 8" cab machine $4615 (made in California) or HP 8" cab machine with their wheels $2263 (made in China). Twice as much for the Diamond Pacific is really hard for people. The HP is stainless and the DP has a ton of plastic parts. It's just a hard time for lapidary I think, many people are strapped for cash and don't have the time or interest to build their own machines or restore old ones.

You've done a comparison, but we support our communities when stuff is smartly made local. Covid results are still arriving in droves.....nothing much great. Thanks for the MK Diamond awareness, hmmmm.

I think it was like 8 or 10 years ago when MK stopped making their own blades and started to import Ehwa blades from South Korea and put their stickers on them. I'm not sure of the exact date, but it's something like that. Really, I think most of the blade you buy these days are all from Ehwa and just repainted and rebranded. My MK blade and my HSP blade have the same manufacturing marks near the arbor hole that I can see with my microscope which makes me think they are coming from the same press.

@@CurrentlyRockhounding yes, that's likely true since apparently everything is manufactured with cheap wages oversees. It's not quite right, and not that long ago we made most things fairly local, short of imported raw materials and electronics. We are still losing good stable businesses with great experience, who have at least dealt with import and provide local service. It's a shame, is all...

Diamond Pacific will be next. They sold me a Pixie a year ago that had a cracked casted frame, bent shaft, bad bearing and a defective air pump. They don’t respond to emails or return phone calls. Never again would I buy any products from them.

Thanks for taking everything off the Facebook post and making a video about it. But not all that information was true.

So, a couple of things here. Yes, a lot of this information came from that Facebook thread, which is perfectly acceptable, and I did triple check everything I said and reached out to MK for comment, of which they never responded. Can you tell me what exactly I got wrong here so that I can make the correction? I noticed that you didn't include that part in your comment.

@@CurrentlyRockhounding you didn't include that others provided the information for you, nor gave credit to those people as well. Figure it out on your own.

@@TheTwilightofheavenSo nothing I said here was factually incorrect at all, but you didn't like that I shared public information from a public Facebook group, that I then fact-checked. That is 100% not something that requires citation. Do you share source and citation for every single thing you have every read or learned about on the internet? The answer is no, no you do not.

@@CurrentlyRockhounding fact checked how? By giving a company at the most 3 days to respond? Or by having others do that fact checking for you based on comments that might not even be true based on your own admission just now? Again. Figure it out yourself

@@TheTwilightofheavenYou know, in the world of media, requests for comment are measured in hours and not days. The fact that I gave them days to respond is plenty of time and for more time than anyone else would extend to them So, for example, when it comes to the PPP loans that the received, I verified on a number of other sites that the numbers were correct. Do you want me to do a full fact checking break down for you in the comments here with timestamps? If you really need that, ill break out the crayons so even you can understand it. I do the maximum amount of checking that I can for everything I can here on the channel, which is far more than just about anywhere else on the internet, let alone a KZbin channel that makes almost no money. I also allow people to point out flaws and make corrections if needed. You're an example of that. Your first comment here said "But not all that information was true." I asked what wasn't true, and you still haven't told me. That leads me to think you were just saying that because something I said upset you and everything I said was based in facts. Please correct me if I'm wrong here and in your next comment point out the exact mistakes I made, and I'll post a correction in the description box or pin a comment.
