I checked it today on my 12m Starboard Generation paddle board. I moved from the island of Alcatraz towards the mid of the GG bridge pretty fast, then started to paddle to the shore, but despite my efforts I almost paddled in place, so the current was still pretty strong. I was able to stand up and paddle harder when I approached the shore since the cross chop was smaller there. Overall, I think you can paddle from Alcatraz to the Fort point in less than an hour. Water temperature was OK, so even if the half of the way the escapees had to swim, the chances to survive were high. I guess that "reported" escape plan towards Angel's Island was a diversion.
