I love these MAPS presentations, they're always so interesting. At about the 07:28 mark, the notion of divine punishment for moral transgressions in prior lives is raised and it got me thinking about the futility of punishment. If there is such a is a karmic back-and-forth of action and reaction, I doubt very much that it's done in the spirit of punishment as justice for a perceived crime.

I agree. I am an indian, and a hindu, and in the karmic understanding of existence, there is nothing like a punisher and the punished. Hinduism is one of the most misrepresented and misunderstood collective wisdom. And karma is one of those wisdoms. I guess the 'spirit of punishment' angle comes from christian outlook of the world, which looks at the world through polarised lenses. Heaven-hell, god-satan, punisher-punished...

If there is a moral cosmic law (personally I believe there is), there has to be a punishment, a pay-back or at least a reaction, when this law is infringed. Be it here and now, in the afterlife or, if you believe in reincarnation, in a subsequent life, doesn't change the fact that if an action is done with ill will, especially to harm others, the wrong has to be in someway corrected.

Sorry, but what are you implying with this question?

Not sure why everything he said sounded like it was coming from the teacher on Peanuts, ...like "whahhh whah whah whahhh whah whah whahhh whah whah whahhhhhh. I kept waiting and listening for some kind of contextual clue or phrase I could connect with but after 20 minutes I fell asleep and then turned it off. I guess this man either talks way over my head or about a bunch of stuff I have no idea about. I also wonder sometimes why it takes so long for some people say what seem like practically nothing at all. If anyone can break this down into a couple or few coherent phrases it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

He is talking to an informed, specific audience who already knows the broad lines of the subject. To me his talk was very interesting and made perfect sense.
