Johnny Speight was a class act.He looked at the ignorance of people in society and brought it to our attention in humour so we could strive to avoid being like them.Instead,his works are all but censored and it is now seized upon by the far right. Socialist crap????? LMFAO!!!!!! That comment is funny as shit, all by itself. Please, give us your favorite analogies between socialism and anything else you choose; feel free to quote Saint-Simon or Fourier, or perhaps Owen, or Proudhon, or even Marx. It was a fuckin' comedy you plonker; one that took on the racial barriers and social climate of the times in 1970's Britain. Go slap yourself in the face and read a book........ Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

YES YES, finally someone who knows the truth, I'm Asian and I agree, this and Alf garnet would never be repeated, not because of the racism (which was actually satirical from the excellent Johnny Speight) but because it was telling of government control and 40 years later the government are doing the same tacticts!
@whiskeyriver43228 жыл бұрын
Yes Ping Pang. Spike Milligan was very aware of the racial tensions that existed in the UK. He brilliantly, and courageously created comedies that openly displayed that tension to the general public with the intention of teaching us all a very important lesson. This show was not very different from "Love thy Neighbor", or "Mind your Language", except that it was a bit harsher, and "In your face" with the stereotypes. We all saw this behavior in our day to day lives, but were too afraid of ourselves to admit it. Even today, so many decades later, we can read some of the comments here, from people still in either denial, or flat out refusal to accept the lesson

For all the keyboard warriors, this series was saturated in hidden truths, stay calm, think outside the box and the humorous subtleties dismiss any racist accusations. Kenny Lynch played a superb role in this along with many other talented performers. This is why it is so important to laugh at ourselves, warts and all.

@davidscott10523 жыл бұрын
Actually love they neighbour wasnt really racist ...it was more about the women being the grown ups and the men being bickering children. The two wives used to get on very well with each other whilst they looked down upon their husbands for being childish ,constantly bickering (usually over minor things) with each other while calling each other racist names ...in retrospect it probably did more for race relations than many "well meaning" programs

The ones who made the money in the colonial days, were the rich British, who were part of the establishment. Working class people weren't responsible for colonising India. They followed the money by going there & working & running tea plantations & the railway- as they were poor and destitute themselves, as at the time most people were slaves in workhouses or factories.Even if Britain never colonised India, the Indians would have come here regardless like Eastern Europeans do. A lot of Indians go to Dubai & other Arab States for the money as immigrants, much in the same way.
@thebennt61306 жыл бұрын
GoogleHarassedMe GoTOHell are you referring to Queen Victoria who saw herself as the Empress of India, before part of it became Pakistan or Queen Elizabeth who came to the throne as the Empire was dying?
@thebennt61306 жыл бұрын
MarineAqua45 I would agree, except that it was the fact the Britain had colonised India that gave the first India migrants of the twentieth century to right to stay here. The European migrants were given the right as a consequence of our membership of the EU of course.
@thebennt61306 жыл бұрын
MarineAqua45 also, many British families worked in different parts of the Empire, so when Caribbean slavery was over, some moved to India and to Australia. Many of these families made vast fortunes and married into aristocracy. Some did not return to what is now the UK.

I think you will find that Speight was not writing about the attitudes of the Labour Party but of the working man. Many Eastenders of that time were conservatives both socially and politically. Hence Alf Garnett being a conservative who agreed with Enoch Powell.

If we go back far enough in time...we would find that all of us are related to on another. In fact there is a theory that all human kind can be traced back to 7 women (called clan mothers), these women shared a common maternal ancestor called the mitochondrial eve. Skin color it seems was only a relatively recent phenomenon that occurred due to some genetic/climatic changes. Also it seems only women have the mitochondrial DNA to carry the genetic line to the next generation.
