Excellent video ! one suggestion: twice as many passes on each grit, to better remove the scratches left by the previous grit. I use a 1x42 machine, with P120 (damaged edges), P220, P400, P1000, P2500 belts. (that's 125, 68, 35, 18.3, 8.4 microns) then coarse and fine compounds on leather. Good for kitchen knives, chisels, plane irons, gouges. Just watch the heat ... dip in water if edge gets too hot to touch.

As an artist that works in polished stone; I can see the benefits of higher grits. My final polish on most stones is 14,000 grit, some up to 50,000 grit.

The take away for me is the camera and being able to SEE what is going on at the business end. El Cheapo camera you say, but the view on the the screen is amazing. Thank you for sharing.

the knife steel in those cheap kitchen knives probably won't apex up as much as other steels kind of interesting to see up close

Thanks for the great explanations. Keep up the good work! I'm just starting to learn how to sharpen my own blades with anything other than a Chef's Choice 120 3 stage sharpener. I'm just learning about edge geometry and how to maintain a concave grind vs a convex or scandi, etc. I need knowledge, and I need wisdom. So please, teach teacher, teach! And preach preacher, preach!

If you can keep the heat down, your angles tight, and add something like a felt or leather belt for stropping (which WILL fit) this is a GREAT piece of equipment for the money.

Agreed Edmond. Need a light touch if stock 3450rpm motor. Variable speed is the way to go. Check my other videos on the Rikon sander and a new video I have on belts if interested. Aloha

I sharpen professionally so I've upgraded to some more precise and less economical equipment but as I said, FOR THE MONEY, this is a really great piece.

Thanks for the idea, Ive been playing around with a few things. For many the guide alone will work fine. So far Im liking the heavy duty duct tape because it seems to hold up and when it gets dirty can be replaced easy enough.

Great video. I love the combination of high grit and microscope. If you can add a BESS sharpness test I'll die. Straight up die from watching it over and over again.

I recently borrowed a friends BESS and had some fun for a few weeks. Sub 100 consistent with the 1x30 belts n strops. Didnt even think to record it. Damn!

I see that the edge guide can be ordered to go with the belt or away from the belt. So if I was going to lay it on the back I would order the away version?

Why not put Dr. Scholl's® Moleskin on the surgi-sharp angle guide? The video is great, your not talking too much.

I will check that out! Currently I use a heavy duty duct tape that seems to last just ok. Its has to be pretty touch to handle the wear from sliding the blade across repeatedly.

I know this is an older video and that you have upgraded your equipment but still wonder if you think the belt system is a better system than the Tormeck system. If so, for what reason.

Where did you get or how did you make the "bevel guide" attachment you have on the "vertical riser" behind the belt? Would you show it in greater detail, please? Great job and thanks for the video.

This guide is called the surgi-sharp angle guide and is readily available online to purchase. somewhere around $35. It's a great accessory. The microscope is a generic x400 usb scope you can find on Amazon. They are more of less all about the same for $20.

I have some really exciting new stuff to share. My shop remodel is almost finished and then Ill record some more! Thanks to everyone for the support and interest. Honestly didnt expect the response but with new subscribers everyday Id better get on the ball here and share some new stuff. As always its "where Im at", not meant to ever be the final word on the sharpening. Far as I can tell this rabbit hole doesnt have a bottom, just a practical limit. lol

Can you flip the surgi sharp guide so you can hold the cutting edge down on the belt instead of up/against the belt direction?

Sorry I missed your question. You could only if you were to remount the back rest hanging down from above. It would be simple enough to do but it doesnt work very well as the belt will "suck" the blade off the guide and ruin the bevel. I just made a new video on the guide and will go into edge trailing and leading pros n cons very soon. Sorry again for delay in responding, found your comment "pending approval". Adjust settings now. LOL.. There is valuable information to be had by test cutting. Same can be said for "hair shaving". I hear what your saying tho. Free standing phone book, push cutting machete is still a really really good trick! Aloha ;)

In some later videos he mentioned that about 2000rpm works fine, so 1725 should do it.

John Holmes thanks for the interest. I didn't show it much in this earlier video but it is just a generic no name x400 USB scope, they run about $20. I plan to upgrade at some point but it works great for edge examination.

jim noyb that's exactly what I did by replacing the single phase AC motor with a variable speed DC. great advice it really makes a huge difference in the control.

that is the safest way to go, if you really want to cya, replace the ac breaker with a GFI, breaker, if the unit jams for any reason, it will save the speed control.

Speed control does not work very well at all with stock motor . Need to get a variable speed motor to use the variable speed control .

Carefully observe where the chatter is coming from? Is it the belt joint hitting the leading edge of the platten? Move platten back slightly or round off the leading edge etc

I found this on KZbin from 3M (Page) kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4rdhadpd5uMgbM it basically a Scotch-Brite Durable Flex belt against the Non-Woven belt like you showed in this video. The durable flex belt may fit better and perform to the same level without any significant modification to the sander..

I've seen guys sharpen with the edge up and others with the edge down to the direction of the sand paper. I see your angle guide points it up. Are there pros and cons to each? Why do you prefer up, if you do?

Derek Granquist both methods have pros & cons. lol like edge leading for bevel consistency and burr minimizing. edge trailing is good for convex bevels and full tapers...

Your video is not well made. We all know that. Specifically: you open up with a negative statement about something you're going to use, and give no specifications to back up your accusation of it. And what do you mean "we all know that"? Do you mean "those who have used it"? Do not try to put your opinion into other men's heads. Here's an example: "Cars are not well made. We all know that." "Stew does not taste good. We all know that." Like the man said in the movie: "Don't give me those negative vibes so early in the morning!"

Just a sad part of being a youtuber. People are like seagulls...they just fly by squawk and poop then fly off...I mean its a 4yr old video when I was brand new at recording if I had focused on comments like this I would have never overcame the fear of making them. Cheers bud!
