In this installment, we're revisiting the CURSE of the best new artist. This time we're going through the 2000's and we're on the first half of the decade (2000-2004). Next vid will (hopefully) be 2005-2009.
...I'm more worried about that one. No lie.

I was wondering the whole 2001 segment why Linkin Park wasn't being mentioned since Hybrid Theory came out in 2000, but when they came up in the 2002 segment, I was like "I knew you'd make a good call nominating them since that album defined the early 00's". And I also gave a standing ovation when Bring Me to Life started playing.

The 2000s are a massive blind spot for me because I was in music school. When you're a music major, you don't listen to new popular music because you're way too busy learning about every other type of music and playing the same pieces over and over again until you get them right. I have had to learn about this decade almost entirely via video essays.

Counterpoint: 2001 wasn't all dross. That was also the year we got _Toxicity, Amnesiac,_ and motherf**king _Lateralus._ However, to your points about Norah Jones... I'm not going to argue that she's the most exciting artist in the world, or that she necessarily deserved to sweep the Grammys like that. Hell, that's not my type of music either. But I do think it's worth remembering the context of the culture during that time period. See, there's a _reason_ that the sonic equivalent of Ambien was so appealing in 2002, of all years. I distinctly remember what things were like immediately post-9/11. I remember the American flags everywhere. I remember the genuine sense of togetherness (at least until it was squandered in the Iraq War and the polarization worsened in the decades since). And I also remember the way that, for a period of about 1-2 years, Americans' popular culture tastes suddenly became (in general) a _lot_ more reserved, introspective, and in need of some sense of stability. The party of the 80s and 90s was over, and 2002 was the hangover. So we got both Enrique Iglesias *and* the duo of Chad Kroeger/Josey Scott each having a massive hit titled "Hero", and even _Enya_ had her biggest hit in over a decade. People were in shock and in mourning, and gentle, calming music was a big part of the healing process for a lot of them. So it really doesn't surprise me one bit that an album like _Come Away with Me_ would sweep the Grammys that year-- that album is about as inoffensive and nonconfrontational as they get. If there was _any_ year in recent American history that I genuinely don't fault the Grammys for playing it safe, it's 2002.

@ConvincingPeople

A Sun Came is a solid album, arguably underrated, but it's easily one of Sufjan's strangest and was and is far too experimental and rough around the edges to have gotten that kind of Grammy nod, especially in 2000. Like, let's set aside how goofy "Super Sexy Woman" is and talk about how this record has one of his darkest songs ("Kill") as the second half of its big emotional climax and ends with "Satan's Saxophones". Or how there are like four different pitched-up joke interludes. It's a very odd record!
@michaelvessel4604

Very odd record for sure, and honestly I’d say it’s one of the strangest debut albums from any artist I think I have ever heard. He really did throw everything at the wall for his first go at it, and even when compared to the rest of his discography it really does stand out.

Oh so it's like a case of Pablo Honey effect except for real?
@ConvincingPeople
@ConvincingPeople 14 күн бұрын
@@eliasmg9144 It’s more like… Pablo Honey is a pretty normal alt-rock record for the time with a handful of really solid tunes and one insane standout single, whereas A Sun Came is a highly experimental record with both some of the funniest and most depressing songs said artist would ever release but also doesn’t quite live up to the extremely high standards that that artist would set later. It’s arguably more comparable to David Bowie’s first self-titled or Sonic Youth’s really early work: There is some classic material in there, but it’s all over the place and very weird. (Hell, Sufjan even has the same “two non-indicative early records which nonetheless echo throughout a musician’s career” thing going on that Bowie and SY do: His sophomore record, Enjoy Your Rabbit, is a symphonic breakcore/IDM/glitch record with almost no vocals.)

Olivia Rodrigo reminds me how much I miss her. Like her, she's ANOTHER half-Asian American pop rock chick who ALSO released HER debut single about romance that became the biggest hit of her career AND songwriting AND album debut at just 18, which was just 20 YEARS PRIOR!!! Not to mention, Michelle ALSO paved the path for other pop rock teen artists to follow, including Avril a year later! She's the only Asian American music act I can think of who crossed over between pop, country and adult contemporary charts. And I just finished listening to what should've been her 2010s follow-up album West Coast Time and it sounded like we were robbed of hearing her natural evolution into a music vet. I then listened to her most recent album which was pretty good! Imo, talent means nothing to have a successful career if you don't have just as strong of a management team. Taylor should bless her lucky stars she has one. Especially since she herself idolized Michelle Branch, owning a blue guitar because of her and even covering THIS SONG at Michelle's birthstate of Arizona! Screw her label for ruining her career! Todd in the Shadows released his last Song Vs Song episode on KZbin. And I wanted to make some suggestions. Two of my suggestions were All You Wanted Vs I'm With You or Are You Happy Now? vs My Happy Ending Two great songs from two different rocker girls who were growing from teenhood to adulthood at the same time but fell off for different but still sad reasons.

My mom used to play it in the car a lot when I was in late elementary/early middle school, and it's stuck with me on a very deep personal level in a way that I never really thought about until you started playing those instrumentals in the background and I *immediately* got in my feelings realising how many lyrics I knew by heart. 1:02:38 IIRC ppl being mad at Alicia for the makeup thing was moreso about her attitude than the act itself. She came off “holier than thou” & when ppl noticed that she actually was wearing a bit of “no makeup-makeup” the whole time they were quick to call her dishonest. There was also some decent discussion on colorism in the music industry & how lightskinned women are allotted more space to make decisions like Alicia’s (tho this ofc isn’t her fault). Even taking all that into account it was admittedly overblown in hindsight

How the hell Crash Thompson forgot about Foolish by Ashanti? Baby, Baby, Baby wasn't even her biggest song , Foolish was.

Being Ravi Shankar's kid, I feel it was a nepo-baby award when Norah Jones got all her awards that year.

I have a few comments to make about the 03 Grammys. First of all, I’m not surprised at all that Ashanti was nominated. She was all over the top 40 radio in 2002, both with her own stuff and as a featured artist on other rapper’s songs. She actually saved a couple of Ja Rule’s Cormier radio jits just by being there. Also, “Be Not Nobody” was a really good debut for Vanessa Carlton. I agree she definitely deserved a nod that year.

It feels weird to have it there in a video about "new artists" when it's take number four, though. Same with The Amalgamut on the other side.

Regarding Evanescence, I'm reminded of the meme that more or less goes like "God made me unwell because he knew I would be too powerful if I was stable." Amy and the band have been successful, sure, but think of the potential if they weren't dealing with all that turbulence over the years.

Hm. It feels like there's a big blindspot for R&B in your videos. The Jill Scott, India Arie and Ashanti comments kind of bear this out. 2001-02 was a big year for Ashanti. She ended up with 3 songs in the top 10 at the same time(damn near unheard of before streaming) and her album sold gangbusters. Ashanti was so huge that when Beyoncé released her solo debut in 03', a critic famously named his review "Solo Beyoncé: She's No Ashanti". Great videos otherwise.

Foolish is a classic, and honestly one of the most unique hit songs of the time! Crash makes great videos but most of the youtube music critics seem to...lack a lot of the knowledge of R&B of that period.

In 2002/2003 I got down with both Norah Jones' Come Away With Me and Bad Religion's Process of Belief. We exist Crash, oh we exist. Additionally, how can we discuss 2001 without mentioning Jimmy Eat World's Bleed American, Thursday's Full Collapse, Saves the Day's Stay What You Are, Further Seems Forever's debut The Moon is Down, Dashboard's Places You Have Come to Fear the Most (what a year for Chris Carrabba), hell even give notorious scene creep Jesse Lacey and Brand New's Your Favorite Weapon some mention for blowing the fuck up that year. 2001 emo walked to '02 could soar. Welcome back, always a good day when I get to spend some quality time with Crash.

Yep, it's called clipping. It happens when your microphone is too high and it distorts your voice. That's the very basic description anyway.

The mic was probably not connected properly, and what we are hearing is the in camera mic with some kind of auto gain turned on. This is very common with the Rode Video Mic that a lot of youtubers use.
