CORRECTION: At around 5:00 during the first Dishonorable Mention, I accidentally used the wrong pronouns for the artist in question. They go by they/them pronouns. Honest mistake and I should have caught it in editing, but the goof is on me. Sincerest apologies there.

In that spirit, I'll toss out a couple more recommendations for people looking for more music in that vein: Sigh, Unexpect, Don Salsa, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Faxed Head, Ved Buens Ende, Sculptured, Aborym, Gonin-Ish, !T.O.O.H.!, Clotted Symmetric Sexual Organ, Lunatic Gods, Contrastic-and that's just metal bands, really.

The wait was absolutely worth it. What a great video; humour's still on point and the picks were explained well (with a few curveballs, gotta say). And yeah, 2023 was a WEIRD year for music... and thank goodness for that. Hell, even in the (mid-to-lower parts of the) American pop charts with regional Mexican music and afrobeats on the rise. It seems that the #1 album on here would fall under "respectable garbage"? Would that be an accurate label for it?

55:30 you know what… fair enough. Calling this A7X’s St Anger is a reasonable. Especially when I think about it, both albums tried something different, but missed the target, and there’s some songs on their I don’t mind, some I do like *ducks*, and weirdly enough when both of them play some of the songs from those albums, they sound far better than they did on the albums.

Ehh... I'd still listen to A7X at their worst (and this is definitely at their worst, most schizphrenic 1.5/5) over that cracked-out, coffee-can cocked-up pisstake (which I took the CD, epoxied to a clay pigeon and took it out for skeet shooting I was that furious) 0.25/5. I'd like to see Frog Leap cover the singles of this album and see if they can be improved.

I'll say this regarding Lighting Up The Sky, It's not my favorite Godsmack album by any means but I do think it was probably the best result we could've gotten given the circumstances. Cause when you think about it, The album preceding it was extremely polarizing among the fanbase and turned away a lot of long time listeners as a result, Though in spite of its controversy, It also managed to be their most successful release since Faceless in 2003. With all 4 singles going straight to the #1 spot on the rock charts. So given this, I think the decision to not stray any further away from their core sound was a smart move. I mean really, If you took the song Red, White & Blue out of the tracklisting it'd probably be their fourth best album behind the first three. The writing on the rest of the songs is pretty solid and there's so many tiny details that give it much more personality than the previous two had. I don't think it'll ever have a proper reevaluation but I do think time will show that Lighting Up The Sky was a good send off. Or at least the title track itself, Say what you will about the rest of the album but the 3 song sequence of Best Of Times, Growing Old, and Lighting Up The Sky was just perfect. As for the rest the only other album I listened to last year was Puddle Of Mudd's Ubiquitous and it was so inconsistent that it made me appreciate Welcome To Galvania more. At least that album for all of its flaws actually tried.

I was passively listening to it... Until I heard "Eurovision" Well, taking about Måneskin, as an Italian I can't stand them. They are quite everywhere. I liked "Zitti e buoni" when it came out. Eurovision wise it's not bad. I don't like it now. Some songs from their new album are used here for ads. I don't want to hear them. Let's come back to Eurovision, why don't we? Well, you got my attention with Hatari, I like them. I like them a lot. I quite miss them. They had one album, some people say that it was published too late to be interesting for them... I feel bad for them but let's put that aside. For Käärijä I agree. I liked him so much. But it is what it is. We all know the problems with having juries that is, in the majority, specialised in pop or that are past Eurovision entries or that are just TV personalities. I just hope Käärijä will have a good career and support. I like him so much I made a crochet doll based on his look. Anyways, I really like your videos! Love from Italy!!

For the Morgan Wallen thing, I get it. My eyes widened when I saw the track list. 36 songs? Are you kidding me? There are Broadway cast albums with fewer songs on them and they have multiple artists and singers on them. The original version of "All Things Must Pass" has only half the amount of songs as this album and that was a triple album! "The Last Waltz" was shorter than this and at least that was a live album! 36 songs of new material?! You really think people are going to spend two hours listening to this Morgan? For fucks sake not even the longest albums in the 90's were this bloated. You couldn't have at least cut a third of this?!

Only recently got round to it after years of hearing about them and it was one of those great 'oh' moments as a music fan when you suddenly realise where a whole bunch of bands you've been listening to for your entire life got their sound from. In this case Mr. Bungle and other Mike Patton side projects and, unexpectedly, early Brit pop like Blur and Suede. Fact is 'Life is But a Dream...' wouldn't exist without Mr. Bungle and Mr. Bungle wouldn't exist without Cardiacs. You might not like it, but if you are interested in seeing where these weird sounds come from it's worth listening to.

Hey Crash good to see you back at it my dude, while I agree with just about everything on this list, your assessment of the new A7X was SPOT ON. I've been down with avenged since at least unholy confessions and city of evil still has some of my most favorite songs they've made and that new album was a hot steamy pile of suck. It was like giving a schizophrenic ADHD patient a mountain of cocaine and letting them record every hair brained idea and tossing all of it into a blender with no rhyme or reason or structure and being forced to slurp it all down while pretending that it's a genius innovation, like they had 50 songs all chopped to pieces and stitched together Frankenstein style. And yeah my first thought after 3 songs was exactly comparing it to a poor imitation of Mr. Bungle. Only when you put it at the top of the list did I finally realize it is pretty much number one worst for me too, if only because I really wanted to like it and wanted it to be good but was sadly disappointed. Still it's great seeing you again hope next year has some better music for you and the rest of us.

More often than not A7X fans have had little exposure to true experimental music, so this is silly to say in most cases. As Crash said, listen to the artists they said they were inspired by. They do it far better. You can be weird, unusual, and non-traditional while still being cohesive, rather than random and slapdash.

For me, I went into 'Life is But a Dream...' with lowish expectations, as the two lead singles were piss-poor, and for that, I can't say it disappointed me. The singles were some of the album's weaker moments, with songs like 'Cosmic' and 'Beautiful Morning' saving some face, but I'm honestly not sure which song would've been a good choice to sell audiences on the overall sound, as they were just all so radically different. I think beautiful mess is definitely the best way to describe that album.

I had never heard a moment of Songs of Innocence before watching this video, in fact I had zero idea what it was about. ...and I was FLOORED by the Pride (in the Name of Love) rendition. It was one of the biggest WTF moments I had in a while, and not in a good way. Also kudos for the KISS comparison. The second makeup era was... not great to say the least.

I'm a big fan of A7X's weirdo moments, and hell even I had a hard time w. LIBAD - I'm still not sure if I like it or not this many months later. I have a feeling in 10 or so years there'll be a bunch of retrospectives on it, about "were we too hard on this record" or "were we too nice to this record". It will be Remembered, that I'm sure of...

I'm soooooooooooo glad you showed no mercy and brought the hammer down on U2's "Songs Of Surrender". That was such a depressing slog of a listen and it is beyond me how U2, a band that used to grip me with every new release from the late 80s on through the early 00s...............have been one of the single most complacent, unimaginative acts in all of music and are in the midst of a two-decade-long losing streak beginning with shamelessly plagiarizing themselves with "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" and becoming even more uninspired and sanitized ever since. "Pop" was the last U2 album I enjoyed listening to from front to back. It may have been a hot mess of an album, but that's exactly why I enjoyed it: because they were swinging for the fences and were fearlessly willing to be experimental, and it made for a really interesting listening experience even as obviously imperfect as it was. Moreover, some of Bono's most personal, vulnerable songs EVER appear on that album with "Mojo", "Please" and "Wake Up Dead Man". One of my single biggest issues with U2 over these past two decades..............is Bono's OBSESSION with every lyric and every song NEEDING a big statement. When, really, I feel Bono is at his best lyrically when he gets more personal and vulnerable. And I'm just patiently waiting as a long-suffering follower of U2 for him to deliver more of that and for the rest of the band to revitalize that experimental hunger again. Until then, I'm awaiting with bated breath Todd In The Shadow's TRAINWRECKORDS episode on "No Line On The Horizon".

Thirty Seconds to Mars played "The Kill" and some new song I think is called "Seasons" back to back on New Year's Rockin Eve. Even the Letos messing up the former shows just how little effort they're making in the last decade.

49:30 THANK YOU CRASH! I wanted badly, so fucking badly, to enjoy this album. I listened to it about 5 times, each one really digging in to see any hidden depth and complexities. And they just WEREN'T THERE! Everyone I know really enjoyed this album, but I just can't get past the abysmal production and monotonous repetition in most of the songs. To the point that when I saw A7X at Louder Than Life, I had a whiplash of enjoyment. From pulse pounding highs, to literally bawling my eyes out over a friend gone far too soon during So Far Away. To just apathy during any of the LIBAD songs.

Wow so Leto actually tried to start a cult? I was unfortunate enough to see 30 Seconds to Mars at a festival and Leto was creepy as all hell. He got underage female fans up on stage which would normally seem an innocent nice thing to do for fans, but it felt really off, just the way it was clearly about feeding his ego hard to describe but... eugh. I said to my friend that he gave off serious cult leader vibes. And here we are. Roger Water's Darkside of the Moon is the worst thing I've heard this year. Far worse than Avenged Sevenfold IMO, at least they tried.

Another thing to be pissed at HARDY for has to be that he wasted the potential of Jeremy McKinnon, Andrew Wade, and Cody Quistad on "RADIO SONG" (they all had writing/production credits on it while Jeremy also featured on it). It is, without a doubt, my least favorite song of the year.

As an old/og (maybe former is a better word) 30STM fan, it’s sad how little is left of the band they used to be. Their first 2 albums are good and I think the first one is pretty underrated, but the stuff they make now (or have been making for yearss) is just lazy and boring. Might as well call it quits, but you know that won’t happen anytime soon
