I remember back in 1996 when the live-action '101 Dalmantians' came out, a ton of people adopted a dalmantian and 6 months later, the shelters were packed with them. This is a very hyper breed, you see. 'Rascal the raccoon' caused a similar problem in Japan back in the 70's. Don't get some animal as a pet just because it's cute. Online researches can prevent this now at least.

I remember reading about that raccoon. The thing he's from even has a moral about how keeping raccoons as pets is hard and they belong in the wild, right? But people are just like "wow raccoons are cute, I want one!" I saw another harsher one earlier today (the one that starts like a toy commercial but ends in bad things happening to a puppy). Yeah idk if that’d be a good one for such a lighthearted series. On the other hand, the RSPCA “give us a pound or we’ll have to pull the trigger” one is kind of absurdly funny? Like it doesn’t look like an animal abuse psa. When I first saw it I didn’t know what the RSPCA was so it just looked like someone holding a dog for ransom money. Although even after learning what the RSPCA is, I’m still baffled because they’re only offering to solve a problem they themselves created.
@NutyRiver3 жыл бұрын
@@leelubell9080 I think the issue is that in some places there’s WAY too many stray cats/dogs for shelters to take care of. I’m against kill shelters, but the argument is that any bed taken by an “unadoptable” dog (chronically ill, behavioral problems, illegal breed etc) is a bed that could serve several adoptable dogs. And you can’t just dump animals back on the street (ESPECIALLY domesticated ones) because the life of street animals is horrible and short. Again, I’m heavily against kill shelters, but I don’t think it’s true to say this is a problem the RSPCA caused. The issue is caused by irresponsible breeders and pet owners who dump unneutered animals on the street to have stray babies. Shelters are the ones trying to combat that problem. The ad was probably in poor taste, but if you really want to help the issue then adopt! Or donate to a non-kill shelter. They need ALL the resources they can get.

yeah, I actually see the result come up a lot of times where pets as gifts do not go well for kids and the animals usually dont have a good ending. Maybe not as much with cats or dogs but its the small animals that more often then not get the short end of the deal when the parents arnt invested. Parents just get them to appease the kid and do little or no research and stuff them in tiny death trap cages because its convenient and looks like a toy so the kids like it. Kids typically looses interest and the animal dies early or gets passed around and neglected further tell it dies. I mean, its not always the case, but its way to common.
@FrenkTheJoy3 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of cases even for cats and dogs where like a month after Christmas the animal gets sent to a shelter because it was a cute Christmas gift but now it's not Christmas anymore so it's not cute. I also think in general it's bad to give an animal as a gift because like, you want a connection with the animal. People go to shelters and are just drawn to one animal in particular, so I'd prefer to pick out my own pet rather than have someone else do it. It's much better when people give Petco gift cards or stuff like that as a Christmas gift, so when things are more settled down the recipient can pick out their own pet and buy the stuff for the pet with the gift card.

Along with the essential care, I do let it rest on me, though granted I wear a thick blanket to avoid getting clawed. All to say that one shouldn't get a pet for their kids, but rather for themselves.

Chad, the one about not giving pets as a gift is really important. Many people buy pets as gifts and the recipient doesn't keep them long. For Easter, the amount of bunnies that end up released in the wild or brought to shelters rises. For Christmas, its puppies. A few weeks later when they're a pain in the butt to train, have accidents in the house, and grow so they're no longer as cute, they get taken to a shelter. The ad is important to remind people pets are living things and require a lot of attention, money, and responsibility. It's to make people think twice before surprising a loved one with a pet they may not be able to properly care for long term.

Actually, most pets given during holidays like Christmas, Easter or birthdays end up in shelters soon after or being dumped off somewhere. I used to volunteer at a shelter and grew up on a working farm. You wouldn’t believe the amount of people who grew up believing their parents that farmers want your unwanted cats/dogs, pregnant ones or boxes of litters of them. The amount of half-grown puppies and kittens surrendered around January/February are staggering as are the young chickens/ducks a month or two after April as well as rabbits once people realize way too late rabbits aren’t the best pet for every kid as they can be pretty grumpy when grown. There’s also the huge amount of ‘free’ half grown animal adds around the same time. That’s why a lot of shelters offer an adoption gift card instead, so after Christmas or whatever holiday, the person can go pick a pet they’re far more likely to keep. Giving animals as gifts usually allows people to think of them like toys, when it’s no longer shiny and new, they don’t want it. You give away or throw out toys you no longer want.

The reaction to the RSPCA puppy commercial is so American/North American... "most pets given as gifts turn out okay"... Not true at all. It's actually a serious issue. So many pets, particularly in North America, are adopted and then abandoned as soon as they become inconvenient. Adding a member to your family that requires so much responsibility should never be considered a "gift" to be given. It's responsibility for another living being, and it should at least be considered seriously. You wouldn't give someone a kid as a present, and it's actually pretty similar.

The joke of that Bounty ad only works if you know that they are - supposedly - extremely unpopular. "Celebrations" is a popular brand of chocolate tin that people often buy at Christmas containing, amongst other things, Bounty bars, and it's a common joke that they only put those in the tub because people won't buy them when sold separately.

I get the pet ad and appreciate what it wants to do. At least in Lady and the Tramp, despite Lady being a surprise gift for the wife, she was given proper care and stuff afterwards. Of course, that's just a movie but it's an example of how it can turn out ok, so long as you're committed to caring for the pet. Though it's not gonna stop kids from asking for a pet for every occasion. The best you can do there is explain why you can't.
