I saw another harsher one earlier today (the one that starts like a toy commercial but ends in bad things happening to a puppy). Yeah idk if that’d be a good one for such a lighthearted series. On the other hand, the RSPCA “give us a pound or we’ll have to pull the trigger” one is kind of absurdly funny? Like it doesn’t look like an animal abuse psa. When I first saw it I didn’t know what the RSPCA was so it just looked like someone holding a dog for ransom money. Although even after learning what the RSPCA is, I’m still baffled because they’re only offering to solve a problem they themselves created.
@NutyRiver
@NutyRiver 2 жыл бұрын
@@leelubell9080 I think the issue is that in some places there’s WAY too many stray cats/dogs for shelters to take care of. I’m against kill shelters, but the argument is that any bed taken by an “unadoptable” dog (chronically ill, behavioral problems, illegal breed etc) is a bed that could serve several adoptable dogs. And you can’t just dump animals back on the street (ESPECIALLY domesticated ones) because the life of street animals is horrible and short. Again, I’m heavily against kill shelters, but I don’t think it’s true to say this is a problem the RSPCA caused. The issue is caused by irresponsible breeders and pet owners who dump unneutered animals on the street to have stray babies. Shelters are the ones trying to combat that problem. The ad was probably in poor taste, but if you really want to help the issue then adopt! Or donate to a non-kill shelter. They need ALL the resources they can get.

I remember back in 1996 when the live-action '101 Dalmantians' came out, a ton of people adopted a dalmantian and 6 months later, the shelters were packed with them. This is a very hyper breed, you see. 'Rascal the raccoon' caused a similar problem in Japan back in the 70's. Don't get some animal as a pet just because it's cute. Online researches can prevent this now at least.
@FrenkTheJoy
@FrenkTheJoy 2 жыл бұрын
I remember reading about that raccoon. The thing he's from even has a moral about how keeping raccoons as pets is hard and they belong in the wild, right? But people are just like "wow raccoons are cute, I want one!" Like how kids demanded their own "Nemo and Dory" after Finding Nemo came out even though the very important subplot is about how the fish don't want to be in a tank, they want to live in the ocean.

I got a pet rat, Tina, after seeing the movie "Ratatouille" in theatres with my mom. I loved her with all my heart and cared for her the more I could but did very poor research before hand and although she lived a good 2 1/2 years with lots of cuddles our household was NOT fit to take care for a rat. not to mention she was alone and rats are very intelligent and social animals that absolutely have to live with at least another rat or else get very sickly and depressed, and also I was a rambunctious 12 years old that handled Tina during playtime......rather roughly. Poor Tina. yeah pets aren't fashionable stuffed animals, people.

The bounty ad is a joke based on the fact that the celebrations chocolate selection box is quite frequently seen at Christmas parties here in the UK. The box includes mars, twix, snickers, etc. But when all those run out it's pretty much just bounty bars left and they stay like that for weeks.

"Gift" pets are a problem year around- Easter and Christmas being the two big ones. From neglect to abandonment... It doesn't get better. And Chad not knowing this is a good example as to why PSAs and ADs like that one are actually good :) although done *a bit weird* it not only gets your interest to look deeper into it (for some people) but it helps bring more attention to the issue (even if just a little).
@kagehikari4281
@kagehikari4281 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, I actually see the result come up a lot of times where pets as gifts do not go well for kids and the animals usually dont have a good ending. Maybe not as much with cats or dogs but its the small animals that more often then not get the short end of the deal when the parents arnt invested. Parents just get them to appease the kid and do little or no research and stuff them in tiny death trap cages because its convenient and looks like a toy so the kids like it. Kids typically looses interest and the animal dies early or gets passed around and neglected further tell it dies. I mean, its not always the case, but its way to common.
@FrenkTheJoy
@FrenkTheJoy 2 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of cases even for cats and dogs where like a month after Christmas the animal gets sent to a shelter because it was a cute Christmas gift but now it's not Christmas anymore so it's not cute. I also think in general it's bad to give an animal as a gift because like, you want a connection with the animal. People go to shelters and are just drawn to one animal in particular, so I'd prefer to pick out my own pet rather than have someone else do it. It's much better when people give Petco gift cards or stuff like that as a Christmas gift, so when things are more settled down the recipient can pick out their own pet and buy the stuff for the pet with the gift card.
@Rythen2
@Rythen2 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, sadly it's so common that a christmas pet gets abandoned or rehomed a few months into the new year, once people realize it's a commitment and not a cute toy.

I got a guinea pig one year. This was after getting a book about guinea pigs and how to take care of them. Actually, on Christmas morning, I got supplies to take care of a guinea pig, and we bought the actual guinea pig a few days later. My piggie's name was Cinnamon. I took good care of her, but it turns out she was sick when we got her. Specifically, she had a respiratory infection. She wouldn't eat much, and when we brought her out for floor time, she wouldn't run around. She only lasted maybe a few months. Don't buy from Petco, kiddos.

About the pets given as gifts thing...no...they don't turn out well all that often. There are people out there who like to give puppies/kittens as gifts on Christmas and chicks/bunnies as gifts on Easter. That's true, but the ad was worded as if the kid was aware that she could get a puppy for Christmas. Everyone in the comments assumed it was supposed to be a "surprise gift," but that's not the intention. It sounded more like something she knew about, so that she could be prepared for it, which goes against the message. The message is instead sounds like, "Don't buy a pet at all" rather than, "You should consult with the whole family before making that kinda decision so everyone can be prepared for it." I think the commercial means well, but the message wasn't conveyed properly.

Kicking her down the stairs, not letting her in the house. Eventually, they moved house. They moved house without her. They left her here. Since she was quite friendly with my dad, we took her in. She was too scared to even go up the stairs. She usually stayed in our garden. She didn't deserve to live in fear. So, these kinds of commercials are incredibly important, more than you know. 10:24: It actually is a problem, most holiday pet purchases are made on impulse without thinking about or learning how to care for the animal properly, and as a result end up in a shelter or returned to said shelter, it gets so bad that most shelters have a moratorium on letting people adopt black cats during October.
@WillieManga
@WillieManga 2 жыл бұрын
I have a black cat myself. It was technically a Christmas gift, but I do care about it and give it attention, and I was only given it because it was from a friend's cat. The kittens were being distributed after they grew enough, and I had an older cat before it got too old to go on. Along with the essential care, I do let it rest on me, though granted I wear a thick blanket to avoid getting clawed. All to say that one shouldn't get a pet for their kids, but rather for themselves.

Chad, the one about not giving pets as a gift is really important. Many people buy pets as gifts and the recipient doesn't keep them long. For Easter, the amount of bunnies that end up released in the wild or brought to shelters rises. For Christmas, its puppies. A few weeks later when they're a pain in the butt to train, have accidents in the house, and grow so they're no longer as cute, they get taken to a shelter. The ad is important to remind people pets are living things and require a lot of attention, money, and responsibility. It's to make people think twice before surprising a loved one with a pet they may not be able to properly care for long term.

Exactly. My local Pets at Home store used to sell rabbits, but they eventually stopped stocking them because of the Easter-related problems. Dumping pets in shelters is bad enough, but the people who release domestic animals into the wild expecting them to magically have wilderness survival skills are even more infuriating. An appropriately cynical adult should not be surprised at all that such PSAs are necessary - saddened, but not surprised. The general public is dumb AF.

Actually, most pets given during holidays like Christmas, Easter or birthdays end up in shelters soon after or being dumped off somewhere. I used to volunteer at a shelter and grew up on a working farm. You wouldn’t believe the amount of people who grew up believing their parents that farmers want your unwanted cats/dogs, pregnant ones or boxes of litters of them. The amount of half-grown puppies and kittens surrendered around January/February are staggering as are the young chickens/ducks a month or two after April as well as rabbits once people realize way too late rabbits aren’t the best pet for every kid as they can be pretty grumpy when grown. There’s also the huge amount of ‘free’ half grown animal adds around the same time. That’s why a lot of shelters offer an adoption gift card instead, so after Christmas or whatever holiday, the person can go pick a pet they’re far more likely to keep. Giving animals as gifts usually allows people to think of them like toys, when it’s no longer shiny and new, they don’t want it. You give away or throw out toys you no longer want.

The reaction to the RSPCA puppy commercial is so American/North American... "most pets given as gifts turn out okay"... Not true at all. It's actually a serious issue. So many pets, particularly in North America, are adopted and then abandoned as soon as they become inconvenient. Adding a member to your family that requires so much responsibility should never be considered a "gift" to be given. It's responsibility for another living being, and it should at least be considered seriously. You wouldn't give someone a kid as a present, and it's actually pretty similar.
