The mighty walls and towering monuments of ancient Egypt once again fill the Met stage, as Verdi’s great spectacle returns.Rising soprano Michelle Bradley stars in the title role, a captive Ethiopian princess torn between love and country. Mezzo-soprano Olesya Petrova alternates as Aida’s implacable Egyptian counterpart Amneris, with tenor Limmie Pulliam as the warrior Radamès, the object of both of their affections. Baritone Quinn Kelsey portrays Aida’s father, Amonasro, and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn is the iron-fisted priest Ramfis. Maestro Paolo Carignani conducts.

I met and chatted with Mr Pulliam many years ago, before he was so well known. A very lovely person who never gave up on his dream. I congratulate him on his great success!

@@joemcbob9688 Never heard of any of these singers, are they a new generation? How is Limmie's voice? A spinto to dramatic one or a rather lyric voice?

@@barahona68 I’d say full spinto/dramatic. Also Bradley was Aida, Petrova was Amneris.

@@barahona68 The singers were all backups. They were all young. Petrova replaced Rachvelishvili, who is quite young herself, and Bradley replaced Latonia Moore.

If I were the stars singing Aida and Radames I wouldn’t like ceding the stage to Amneris at the very end. A strange decision by the director, after all of the opera is entitled Aida.
@Keksakallu
@Keksakallu Жыл бұрын
Not that strange, really, when you think about it. The final scene is Aida and Radames being buried alive, their voices fading into the darkness of their impending deaths as Amneris is left alone among the living, wracked with guilt at having been responsible for it all. The fact that she gets the last sung notes of any soloist in the score speaks fairly directly to that. Staging-wise, it's about as close to Verdi's intentions as you can get.
@liedersanger1

@@Keksakallu There we disagree - - a few final phrases do not make the scene about Amneris. I’ve never seen it done this way in dozens of productions, so, if this was Verdi’s intention, it’s been discovered rather late. And its static. The fact that Aida and Radames take the first bows makes the point. I suspect they didn’t sing their duet from way back. The old Dexter production had a fine final scene where Amneris sang prone lying above the tomb. I would have loved to have seen the whole scene.
