An emergency evacuation solution for wheelchair users

Curtin University Building 108 did not have suitable emergency evacuation options for wheelchair users. Stakeholders collaborated to come up with a solution - installing evacuation stair chairs.

As a wheelchair user this is a good start. 4 some1 like I would also require a chest strap & armrests 4 more support. The use of training is good. Part of the training should also include each person as the disabled person & both the front & back assistance position.

they could update the chairs to the newer ones they have out, it can be done by one person. making it that much easier. including controlling decent speed.

A monoblock chair would do all that work. You can easily guide the monoblock chair on the stairs.

My experience of a fire drill as a wheelchair user when I had a pre-interview at a college I was promised that they had evac chairs and I wouldn’t b left behind in any level. Unfortunately when I started my course t only lift they had was wooden floor based. T department was on t 2nd floor with t library and dark rooms on t 3rd. One day t fire alarm went off everyone went to t stairs, a lecturer told me to use t lift I said that is not safe. My fellow students wanted to carry me in my chair down t stairs I told them that too was unsafe for me. In t end I got out my wheelchair and bumped down t hard concrete stairs there were 3 flights of them. On my bottom. My friends carried t wheelchair down and at t bottom i got back in it and went outside. After we were given t all clear t fire safety officer wasn’t amused as to how I had to get myself out. I went to t principal and asked him where t evac chair was that I was told about and how t lecturer told me to go down in t lift.

Someone else should carry outside the wheelchair users original wheelchair. They will need it once outside
