I’m 75 years old as of April 2023 and I still respect the messages that came through his songs. As a kid growing up in the south (North Carolina), as we demonstrated and protested against segregation in Greensboro along side the students from N.C. A&T State University….Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions music held us in unity as we marched the streets with Jessie Jackson who was a student and president of the student body at A&T. Songs like “Keep on Pushing “…”People Get Ready “….”Amen” and so many more. His music was the soundtrack to the Civil Rights Movement way before Marvin Gaye was doing conscious music. Every time Curtis came to town wether he was with Jerry Butler, or The Impressions, or with his own band…I would attend his concerts…the brother always had his thumb on equality and freedom and righteousness for our people in his music. I will always jam to his groove…RIP my brother, your music will always and forever be in my heart ❤…God sent you to help us endure the revolution of America in the 1960’s….

Thank you for this personal context. I am Scots, remember hearing and loving Curtis Mayfield in many incarnations (I’m an old bird from 60’s) but didn’t experience firsthand some of the many social injustices he sings of. He made amazing music with devastating depth of lyrics, absolute genius!

Yes indeed - and (as I only learnt yesterday) most of it was recorded live in the studio, with the 40-piece orchestra and band together! (for reasons of time, they recorded all of the album in just three days, except for Pusherman which had been cut earlier. I figure Curtis probably overdubbed his lead vocals to the full backing track, but the instrumental backing was done live and with very little later editing. Who today would have attempted to record a song like the title track live in one go?

Yes it is, and it comes off beautifully live (heard the even better live take of it on the Ronnie Scott's album, with a powerful spoken introduction by Curtis?). They were scheduled to appear at an outdoor festival event in southern Sweden, where I live, around this time, in July 1988, but when I bought tickets Mayfield had already cancelled, perhaps because of the live recording/documentary film of his shows in London a few weeks before? I did get to see James Brown and his band - a fun memory, the JB's with Maceo Parker were great as always - and some other very good acts, so I have long since stopped grudging that I didn't get the chance to see Curtis live. At an outdoor open-air gig he would probably not have reached quite the same stark energy and precision that he got to in an indoor club show like this one.,,,

I was mere boy when I heard people get ready growing up a dirt road with no indoor bathtub in a crowded little house. Parents done their best with a box fan and swamp cooler for summertime. And my oldest brother gave us his record player and some Chinese Checkers while the milkman brought us two fresh gallons and would come in your house and put it in the ice box.. Time moved on as all the siblings left one by one. At the age of 15 Mama bought me this Airline record player from Montgomery Wards. It had two speakers that would separate about 10 feet apart. So one evening I went out to BenFranklins and saw the new Curtis Mayfield album.. And I thought I better get that one.. On the cover album Curtis was dressed in light yellow suit setting down way out on a hill side.. I couldn’t wait to get home and put it on.. Aw man the song Moving on up just took off and I was hooked.. Then came the live album from the Bitter Inn with Lucky Scott on bass and Master Henry Gibson on percussion .. As time moved on that dirt became a paved road and things begin to change in the town.. And as time changed Curtis had his hand on the pulse of society with Underground . He gave us encouragement songs like Miss Black America a song about little girls dreams.. We can only thank him for all that he has done to keep us aware preach about hope and peace . He was a prophet of sorts and I shall never forget him. Rest In Peace Curtis cause We’re a Winner and never let anybody say boy you can’t make it. LB Tuesday July 2, 2022
