I played bass with Curtis for five months in 1990 until he was paralyzed from a lighting accident on August 13th of that year.

I did then and I still do, listen to his 'live' album from 1971 recorded in the Bitter End ! OK his music is great but listen to his lyrics on that album ! My goodness, the issues he wrote about are still the same these days and that makes me very very sad ! Don't worry, if there is a hell below, we all gonna go.

It's alright!! Curtis Mayfield sang lead with the Impressions before venturing out on his own. Curtis not only had a good voice, he also wrote beautiful music not just for himself but for other entertainers as well. TRULY GIFTED!!!

What Mr. Mayfield was underrated or just ignored about was his ability to express so many emotions via storytelling of life's issues, especially, the current societal ones. It was as if he was talking instead of singing.

Curtis was huge back then, to think he hadn’t connected is a miss. He had a huge audience and was a cultural icon. Genius lyrics as well as sultry melodies, funky as anyone out there. His music is as strong today as it was back then. Genius, pure genius a cornerstone of the Black experience.
