When Mayfield recorded this song in 69, I was in elementary school, and it made me feel like I could be somebody in this life. As a black youth, watching the Civil Rights Movement in the South was very discouraging, so I really needed to know that I could be a winner...

@@alhoward4099 I was there with you. It was a time of having to go to work in the fields on the weekends, two in the morning, coming home at seven in the evening. Those were fifty pound bags of whatever field we worked at, at fifty cents a bag. I left home, at fifteen, lied about my age to work for Hines and Del Monte canneries, went back to school, got my GED and I've worked every since and not in the fields. I've worked in three states for the City, retired now. We are STILL PUSHING five hundred years later and today children don't care either way. I'm grateful I never had children, the road was hard enough. Mama said, "babies aren't dolls, you can't play with them and put them in the closet. The way the system works. I don't regret not having any. I'm a Great (2) auntie and that's fine with me. 🙏🏾💪🏾👊🏾👊🏾

The slideshow/pictures of intelligent, strong, and CAPABLE black men and women made me felt 10 feet tall. Oh! This made me cry so hard! And, this has always and always will be my very favorite! Today we need to spread this song and give tribute to "Mr. Curtis Mayfield" for his vision. He was such an intellectual black man even with his own struggles he was a genius, DEEP! I didn't just roll on skates to his music, I listened to his lyrics even as a child I knew he was deep and he was here to deliver a message and he did that well. RIH Curtis M.

Curtis was a genius and his music was way ahead of the time. Too many skylines, sports, and entertainers and not enough historical figures. Why not the Tuskegee Airmen, First Black General, Booker T Washington, Thurgood Marshall, WEB Du Bois, Jesse Owens, Charles Drew, Jack Johnson, Eddie Robinson, Frank Robinson, Art Shell, Whitney Young, Black Army Tank Division who saved George Patton ass in The Battle of Bulge. I could go on and name thousands more, but that would take all day so I'm gonna leave it right there. Peace and 💘 Love....
