Wonderful musical composer as well. We don't see this kind of creativity anymore. We see either like free-form avant garde ultra-creative stuff or boring, generic stuff we've heard a thousand times. This kind of creativity, which isn't totally inside the box or totally outside the box, but transcends the boundaries of the box in a way that extends the boundaries of the box, is rare. In other words, making unusual and different but familiar and relatable music. The more familiar and accessible, the more people will borrow from it and be influenced by it. The more unusual it is, the more it expands our minds. It's hard to thread that needle but marvelous when it happens. That's how music evolves properly.

I learned about Brother Curtis as a Kindergartner in 1962 because he was one of my Father's Favorite Artists and he played his music Daily. Inspirational and Uplifting Lyrics and Music touched me then and when I was old enough I bought his Curtis LIVE Album at 14. Then Superfly was popular as well. Needless to say his Body Of Work spans Generations. It has contributed to the Sounds of the early 1960s Civil Rights Movement all the way through the Black Films of the 70's and beyond. This particular Ballad touched me when I first heard it and still does to this day. Brother Curtis was a National Treasure for us.

The impact of black music on America's popular music and pop culture cannot be overstated. Artists like Curtis Mayfield helped shape the soul of black music by using storytelling, singing, and oral history to pass down and uplift their culture, much like the West African Griot or Jolly. In a time when even our own seem to agree with the very ones who labeled us inferior, Curtis Mayfield arrived on the scene and much like a brilliant pastor who embedded himself in a pericope and preached where the scripture led, avoiding topical messages, tropes and stereotypes but masterfully explaining a full view of the neighborhood of the scriptures he was assigned to, Curtis too, understood the assignment.
