I know quite a few kids who came back at Christmas from college and their coaches told them the same thing. Then they had more time to develop the change up they were lacking. On my son’s high school team he is the only pitcher who has a change up out of twelve pitchers. It makes sense especially for younger pitchers.
@guitarchim3 жыл бұрын
@@youfound_natman5546 I doubt it. Slider is his main strikeout pitch. In the 2020 season he threw his slider 39.9% of the time whereas he threw his curve 18.8% of the time

Whatever works for you. I threw a slurve and slider. All about preference and how effective you are with particular pitches. If I threw a curveball, it would hang more often than not, and people could go yard. So I never used it in a game. And for my change up, I would just throw a low two seamer. My fastball was hot and has break so that was great to lean on.

Great video, as usual, but I do not see why you should not throw BOTH a curve ball AND a slider. I have a very good curve ball, but I am also working on a slider, which looks pretty good at times. As a hitter, what bothers me the most is a pitcher who can mix up lots of pitches. So if I have a very good curve ball, and a pretty good slider, why shouldn't I be throwing both, especially to the bigger guys with the big, fast swings who seem to always be looking for a fastball to crush? It seems to me that a mediocre to good 3rd or 4th pitch, thrown not too often, can still be very effective in keeping hitters off balance. But it also seems to me that most major leaguers do choose between a curve ball and a slider, so I am wide open to the idea that you are right, I just can't figure out why you would be right.

I think he was just give an anecdote about his specific experience, rather than giving you advice that you need to implement now. I was always a proponent of having a small array of multiple pitches.4 seam 2 seam fastballs.a hard low curveball.a slower 10-4 chest high curve that broke sharp to keep the hitter honest.And my best pitch a nasty slider thrown just like this guy showed.I usually didnt strike out alot but I mixed it up and kept the hitters off balance.Hitting is timing.throw off their timing and when they do hit it, its not on the screws. this keeps your fielders happy lol

I think that a curve is better since, realistically speaking, vertical breaking movement (Curve, sinker, etc) is better than horizontal movement (Slider, cutter, etc.) since the bat is moving on a horizontal plane and the batter cant really control vertical movement in their bat swing.
@MrLecarielion5 жыл бұрын
how much pressure on the baseball should you have as in should you hold the ball tight or loose with the slider? If tight which finger should have the most pressure on it
@calebclausen1535 жыл бұрын
Lecari Elion your middle finger
@alexh86133 жыл бұрын
I'd actually throw a tight grip slider that would be about 8 mph slower than my fastball, a tight grip curve that would be about 12-15 mph slower than my fastball, and then a big arching loose grip slow curve that would be about 25 mph slower than my fastball. On my slider, I would move my middle finger a little bit off the seam and have my index finger more on the seam. But with that being said, everyone has their own feel. Everyone's hand size is different. So something that works great for me, may not work for you. The best approach is to keep trying out new grips yourself.

I no nothing about how and what baseball players throw and when.. I'm new to your site I hope you touch on the approaches used to get batters out. It's like anything else the more you learn about something of interest the more focused you are. I know the basics of baseball as I have paid for several Blue Jays nose bleed seats in the past. You probably just teach pitching but you may want to look at teaching baseball strategy

At 66 years of age and mainly focused on ice hockey... the Blue Jays have brought profound interest to many Canadians who otherwise never would have tweaked their interest. We now have baseball programs galore and way more opportunities for the young at heart... learning the rules and strategies of the game makes it so much more enjoyable.

I thought that most pitchers (Steve Carlton for example) throw the slider with a fixed or hooked wrist, while the curve is thrown with a snap of the wrist.
@johngonzalez51944 жыл бұрын
He mentioned the doorknob effect. Picture a closed door. The act of turning the knob is the slider just before release. Now stand to the side of the door with it open so that you are at a 90 degree angle to it. Work the doorknob from that angle and now you have the hand action on the curve right before release.
@toddapplegate39882 жыл бұрын
Philosophy vs statistics , many pitching greats throw both so choosing one seems like a practical philosophy but looking at stats pitchers with more choices tend to last longer and are successful. So having a great slider doesn't mean having a good curve isn't useful. Another old philosophy is 4 seam is better than 2 seam but that doesn't statistically matter.

Wow, so the Padres player development program is a joke. No wonder they have sucked for decades. Having a curve and a slider is a huge advantage. When you throw both, your curve makes your slider look much more like your fastball. Then again, so many MLB pitcher don't actually pitch, they throw. They have a 100 mph fastball and live off of that. So when the Paders tell them to pick either a slider or curve, it's because both of their pitches suck.
