Today Weezna shows how to build a curved vocal booth to improve recording vocals (please note this is a starter vocal booth and its effectiveness won't be as drastic as a vocal booth of better materials). This vocal booth can be used to do voice-over work, record singing vocals, or rap vocals. This vocal booth uses only 5 materials and 5 tools to build.

Great, lightweight rig that won't weigh down the stand. As I'm using a boom, I'm not sure I can use the dowel, but as long as I have it sitting directly behind the mic, I should be good.

Great construction tips, thank you!! There are a few acoustical concerns with the design though - The type of foam or absorbent material matters a lot! In fact it's absolutely critical for good performance. Open cell foam meant for upholstery will have very little effect compared to closed cell foam meant for acoustic sound control. I'd also highly recommend using Denim insulation for this purpose such as the Ultratouch products. Very thin versions are available from large retailers and can be layered for good effect. Or specialty shops will have 1" - 2" thick sheets that are perfect for sound control. Often this is much cheaper than acoustic foam and can be equal to if not more effective. Then the backing board holding the foam should not be one solid piece. The holes you see in commercial versions are there to let a certain amount of sound pass through. Otherwise you are creating a solid wall which can create new reflections. We want that backer board to be perforated enough to not reflect the singer's voice back towards the mic. I'd think that a large drill bit or circle cutting bit should work fine for this. Hope this helps and thanks again for the great video!

Hey Daniel, yes i agree with what you had mentioned. I was trying to create a simple but effective beginners vocal booth for someone just starting out that can build built with easily accessible materials.. I actually tried cutting slots through the back of the foam board but i made it way too flimsy. Also even with that inexpensive Samson mic (and other budget friendly mics), the rear rejection is actually pretty good on its own. Obviously this is no top end vocal booth isolator but if you watch the test video it actually did improve the isolation of the mic. I'm currently working on a video that shows how to build a much more high end/effective vocal booth and i will do a comparison with this one. I do appreciate the insight, thank you!

I think that these reflection filters need to be 36 inches by 24 inches to make any difference sonically, I could be wrong but that is the smallest they can be if you want to affect your recordings.

sir for better sound try putting foam at the top, and the bottom of you booth, for you will have reverb from the top and bottom, and also you wi need something at the back of you when your recording to stop most reverb from the front which is the mic most important.

Yes, you can definitely make a better vocal isolator than this. That's why i called it a beginner vocal booth because it is just the most simple version. I try to get artists to build this booth kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZvbqndvdpipmdk becuase it is what i consider to be the best without compromising quality. Obviously if you could afford to build a great vocal booth it would be nothing like this one. This is really an inexpensive way to get a better vocal sound without spending a lot of money. Thanks for watching!

Hello.. my question is: why do the manufactured versions of isolators all have some sort of metal on the outside of their booths? Does that make a difference in the sound you get?
@TrueSoundTV
@TrueSoundTV 5 жыл бұрын
Barry Schwam that metal is just to make the isolator strong and support the foam material inside of the unit. The foam will make the difference in sound, the metal could change the sound depending on the size of the holes drilled in it

nmkrios nope the cardboards have a lot of vibrations and that creates tons of reflections, I would tell you to get something more solid, which will make a better treated place.

Sorry, beginner here. Is sound booth necessary if i have pop filter? or
@TrueSoundTV
@TrueSoundTV 6 жыл бұрын
No problem, so yes the pop filter only stops the air that comes from your mouth from effecting the mic capsule. A vocal booth stops the room acoustics from effecting your vocal recording. Both are very important for getting a clean and professional vocal sound. Thanks for watching!

Hmm am i the only one who thinks the voice sounds better without the booth..
@TrueSoundTV
@TrueSoundTV 6 жыл бұрын
So yes the voice sounds a little more open and brighter which is would be great if you weren't going to process and compress the vocal. As you start compressing the vocal without the booth, all of the room sound will actually be brought up as well. So if you wanted a really dry in your face vocal, you won't be able to achieve that. This is why in a setup you would want to record the vocal dry and then add the room sound depending on what your looking for.

Why do vocal isolators tend to be in a curve shape?? whats the reasoning ? sorry, recording noob here.

Good questions. So in audio, generally anything with flat surfaces and right angles reflect back sound or build up frequencies. Having curved/nonparallel walls or surfaces reduces the reflections! Thanks for watching!
