[Link in description] The Father of Coppernicus! This is my custom Adams A8 double shepherd's crook trumpet. It was originally a built for a customer and once it was done I really didn't want to sell it, so I'm thrilled to have it in my collection now.
Why have two double shepherd's crook trumpets in my collection? Well this horn is VASTLY different from my Coppernicus. This horn is much more open especially through the beginning of the horn and first taper. The Coppernicus was designed for a more compact feel. This horn has a larger leadpipe, much larger bore, and of course it's much heavier. It's a thicker, richer sound with very wide slots. Coppernicus slotting is much more defined. The bell and tuning slide shepherd's crook bends are quite different from what ended up in the Coppernicus design. This horn also has a heavy twin tube nickel leadpipe with a threaded integral mouthpiece receiver (we make mouthpieces in our "A8" blank specifically for this horn). It's a zero gap receiver as well.
Of course one similarity between this A8 and the Coppernicus is that both are 100% handmade by the incredible artists at the Adams factory!

There are a couple things to keep in mind with this horn as well, though. It's actually fairly fragile despite being a heavyweight horn. Also the top leg of the tuning slide is very short, so there's not a ton of room to adjust. It also takes a minute to change mouthpieces because the threads are quite fine. This is actually one reason I moved away from the A8 as my primary horn, I like changing mouthpieces frequently! The sound, efficiency, and centering feel a lot better than the versions we tried with quick threads, though.
My house rule is "one horn in, one horn out" so I'm usually selling a couple treasures from my collection here on the web store: www.austincustombrass.biz/tac...

Sounds like a cornet, which I like much better than trumpets!

I know this is probably a stupid question but I’ve heard before that “too much gap is bad and no gap is even worse” so how do they go about making a horn like this with a no gap receiver and how does it work out?

we make the piece to match with the beginning of their leadpipe to produce a seamless transition from the throat of the mpc all the way to the end of the leadpipe. This is a very specific design concept and the base line you mention about gap isn't applicable in this case.
