Cool project! Just one little head's up tho. Epoxy is pretty terrible in UV exposure, so after not too long in the sun, it's gonna get cloudy and start to develop little cracks... but who cares! Its still cool
@becurbilyg5 жыл бұрын
serious question. what if we mix in some clear sunscreen in the epoxy? would this help? are there any alternatives to using epoxy for outdoors?
@Iliketomakestuff5 жыл бұрын
Not all epoxy acts that way. What we're using has UV additives to help combat yellowing & clouding. Similar to what is used on nicer boat finishes.
@becurbilyg5 жыл бұрын
@@Iliketomakestuff Oh I see. Didn't know about that!
@ashipshow5 жыл бұрын
@@becurbilyg Even epoxy with UV inhibitors are not meant to exposed to the elements directly. On boats with clear wood finish, the epoxy is used to encapsulate/protect the wood from the elements, and then typically a marine varnish is applied over the epoxy (like spar varnish / epiphanes/ etc.) Polyester or Vinyl Ester based resins are UV resistant, but they typically don't dry clear so they wouldn't work in this application. The best bet here would be to apply a UV blocking coating on top of the epoxy like an automotive clear coat or varnish. Bob, I hope you don't take this as crapping on your project, I'm just trying to throw info out there that I've learned over the past couple years restoring a boat.

Bob, with the UV ink in the domed resin, I think the resin caused the ink to lift, causing the fuzziness. I'm wondering if you cover the UV ink with a couple of coats of clear coat to seal the ink. Also let the ink dry for a day or two. Make sure all of the solvents in the ink have out-gassed. The clear coat should keep the ink from running. If it runs with the clear coat, it could be the solvent in the clear coat is re-wetting the ink. Try a water based clear coat instead.
