Custom Diecast Redline Volkswagen Beetle Restomod

In this video I will be creating a redline resto-mod based on the Hot Wheels Custom Volkswagen Beetle released in 1980. Hot Wheels stopped making redlines in 1977, so how was this car released in 1980? Mattel entered a promotional agreement with Proctor and Gamble sometime in the mid-1970s to give away unique Hot Wheels cars in specially marked packages of soap. They had produced five different redlines utilizing old castings with plastic bases, but the deal fell through and the order was cancelled. In 1980, most of the old inventory was sold to the Wisconsin Toy Company, who sold four of these five cars in plastic baggies.
I had an extra old Hong Kong base with missing headlights, so I decided to make a resto-mod which resembles the 1968 release of the rare no-sunroof version sold in Europe. Since the cast engine had a post which extended through the plastic base, I couldn't just drill a hole in the metal base as there are already openings for the Hong Kong wire suspension. I decided to drill and tap the small boss in the front of the base and drill a hole in the casting to allow for a screw. This mounting screw will be hidden under the engine.
I installed Brightvision deep dish redline replacement wheels on the bearing axles. The deep dish versions look much better than the originals in my opinion. The engine is a Hong Kong replacement which I cast myself. I have another video on how I made this engine. I glued a small piece of a wooden tooth pick to the bottom of the engine so I can wedge it in the original mounting hole. This will allow it to be removed if I need to take the car apart.

Pretty nice resto-mod you made yourself here! Many people in the scene of modeling diss the Rust-oleum paint. But I've seen so many good results with that brand that I can't agree with them anymore.

Thanks! I've had good results with Rust-Oleum paints, but they do take some getting used to. The 2X enamels spray heavy, so many light coats work best. I'm going to try the Mirror Effect over a gloss black base and see how shiney it turns out. This paint works best on the inside of glass 👍😎
