I did this project too, but I just used the foam board you use for school projects and such. I added batting to mine for a bit more insulation and a softer look/touch. I used a starry night pattern since my JL is Hydro Blue. Thanx for the idea.

use glue dots (Zots) little dots of sticky rubber like the ones credit cards come with in the mail. Some headliners do not hold the velcro and need to be pinned in. these come in roll or sheet, used for posters etc.

Found a hand held jigsaw or coping saw works great on that style foam board over an exacto knife for the initial cut out from when I was making war game terrain. The exacto is definitely better for trimming.

here because I'm curious...VW Tartan plaid would look great in there too. And you can use your own brand and quantity of sound deadening material to apply where you want to knock down some of the noise/resonance of the panel and minimize rain noise.

It’s been almost a year since this video, are they still holding up good?? Any initial ideas that you changed bc something didn’t work out? And do they actually keep your inside a lot cooler and reduced noise reduction? Sorry for all the questions but I really don’t want to spend 400 dollars on headliners.

They are holding up perfect! Still keeping it cooler in the Jeep, and nothing failing at all. I am going to do a follow up video this week since it going to be 110° here in the desert! This was a way better investment than spending $400

@BoldCanyonOutdoors

It’s actually still holding up very well. We are regularly taking off the freedom panels and putting them back on during the AZ winter, and they are still looking like new. After 2 years, they are in better shape then the Mopar ones I ran in my last JKU.

Awesome video! I was looking at the headliners on Amazon (I just recently got my first Wrangler... looking to save on making mods). These things are getting upwards of $250 just for the freedom panels! I already have some of this stuff laying around, so it may not cost me the full $80 for the freedom panel area. But great video, I'll probably be doing this sometime this week. I'm just wondering... how much fabric did you use (I have a JLU, so I don't know if it'll be exactly the same... looks like you have a Rubicon, which the measurements probably would at least be fairly close)?

What type of fabric is best, I imagine cotton would allow the spray adhesive to come through when pressing it on the board. This looked thicker than cotton, just making sure I don't royally screw this up. Thanks in advance.
@BoldCanyonOutdoors
@BoldCanyonOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
This fabric is cotton, but it has almost a canvas feel to it...like a thick Hawaiian shirt for lack of a better description. Just put the spray adhesive on evenly and use consistent pressure to secure it...maybe a rolling pin would help if you think the fabric is too soft

It definitely keeps it cooler and has considerably less cabin noise. We have had a few days over 105-110 degrees already this spring, and there’s been no issue with the spray adhesive or Velcro we used. So far we are perfectly happy and wouldn’t change a thing.

Is foam insulation safe to put into a Jeep open air like that? I thought it wasn’t safe to use because it off-gasses
@BoldCanyonOutdoors
@BoldCanyonOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
This is a non-toxic insulation, as is most styrofoam and home insulation board. You might be referring to spray foam insulation, which does have toxic gasses. No problems with ours for over a year

what do u really mean? they used them in house why not in Jeep? what so dangereous about FOAM being in a Jeep??

Christian Larose styrofoam is a highly toxic substance on its own. This type of hard foam insulation off gasses which means it slowly emits toxic gas from it, this is why you only use it in your house because it’s in your walls not open air in your Jeep
