Today we finish up our custom exhaust for the GT6!
Whether it's a RestoMod or a Pro Touring car, there's no denying that this has been a very rewarding phase of the build - with some nice results and even a few new skills! (Ok, the skills still need some practice)
The entire 304 stainless exhaust is now together, along with some v-band clamps, and a series of hangers to keep it all serviceable and secure.
We can't wait to hear the LS fire up someday, and I hope you'll Subscribe so you can enjoy the rest of the series with us!
Please SHARE this video with your friends, it's a small step that will really help us!

Had a thought while watching this latest vid, perhaps that back gearbox mounting may have been better upside down with closer gearbox support and a recess underneath for the exhaust.

A short braided flex section from your v-band clamp to the pipe upstream would be ideal. Engine vibration through your rigid system may create problems with resonance as well as stress fractures over time.
@dan1906
@dan1906 2 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. By that logic a rigid mounted engine will crack the frame. 35 years ago we built our first race car. Rigid engine and exhaust mount, like everyone in our class. Never broke an exhaust. However, you DO need some length of pipe from the engine to the first mount to allow for some minor movement. To be fair it may help to reduce some noise etc. We did break a bunch of other stuff. For example; sustained high rpms would cause the water pump fan hub to break off and send the fan through the radiator. Never saw that one coming. It had the added effect of watering down the front tires for a real pucker moment.
@NitroNuggetTV
@NitroNuggetTV 2 жыл бұрын
@@dan1906 it has been know for engines to fatigue solid engine mounts to the point they crack off the frame... but whether that's to do with the engine load or harmonics, I couldn't tell you with any great confidence. Resonance in terms of NVH is a huge and very valid point though, especially as this is a street car. isolating vibrations will do more for comfort than any sound deadening will ever do. for that fact alone id prioritise "soft-mounting" the exhaust. Benefit of that is you can mitigate fatigue and expansion issues almost entirely as the exhaust can grow and move as it needs. that rad fan story sounds err ...fun. Never had coolant under my tires and I plan to keep it that way! it looks and sounds terrifying. Was that the last time you ran a viscous fan? haha

Look at the E-type exhaust for an example; there are braided flex sections on the first horizontal pipe.
@dan1906
@dan1906 2 жыл бұрын
@@parrotraiser6541 Sort of an obscure and specific example, but ok, fair enough. BMW, of which I have several, doesn't use flex piping anywhere in the system and they have thin wall exhaust systems (they're noticeably light weight) while having rubber motor mounts. It's really a matter of how far the piping will be twisted and the flexibility of said pipes. I would definitely use a flex section if it were a 4 cylinder because they generate all sorts of nasty harmonics and vibration. A street tuned V8, not so much. However, it could be a good idea for some noise reduction. YMMV. Edit: please don't hold the BMW thing against me. It could be viewed as a little self destructive. 😆

Thank you for addressing the "flex issue" at the end of the episode. That was a concern of mine. If nothing else, cutting down on NVH is always a good thing. You'd be surprised how much sound is sent out through engine harmonics. Your car becomes one giant vibration speaker. I say wait and see how it performs and make modifications from there.

Stunning execution. YES, you do need to account for the thermal expansion of the exhaust somewhere. The entire system will get much longer when it heats up than your snap bushings can accommodate. A bellows unfortunately is your only option. In addition, since everything is so tightly fitting, please include the gasket you are going to use at the exhaust manifolds. You may be incredibly surprised at the wrong time how much that that will through off your perfect fit. Include both gaskets, the ones at the heads and the ones at the 2-bolt exhaust pipe connection. Best of luck. You’ll figure it out, just like all the rest you have tackled so well.

Dayum...that exhaust is the most clean, tidy and _symmetrical_ I've ever seen. A very nice job, especially considering the close quarters you're squeezing it into. Colour me impressed. :-) Re: flex /bellows sections...while they're probably not a bad idea, since your exhaust is removable, you can always wait and see how it sounds before you decide...add them after the fact, as it were. You do have somewhat minimal clearance to play with in a few areas, and it's possible the movement permitted by the flex pieces may actually cause rattles instead of preventing them. As much as it offends my sense of what should be, I'd strongly suggest adopting a "wait and see" approach. Especially since it's easier to add the flex sections later than to replace the piece of pipe you've just cut out for said flex connections. Cheers, mate.

@@FanatikBuilds The last 10 percent of such a build (which never will be "perfect" from the builder's perspective anyway) do take 85 to 90 percent of the fiddly nitty-gritty work taking an eternity and being visible usually only after demounting some other stuff or lifting the car. It will become interesting once more after she will be plated/registered and actually be driven, not only for test drives but daily resp. weekly without an immediate screwing session after each drive. The "screwing session after each drive" phase took a year after I finished my first motorcycle restomod back in the days.

Love the electronic level being added so you can potentially use the phrase, "make the noise" each time you set it down on a level surface! Adding in some brackets and this sounds like another long-running and super interesting build... ;-D Why turn the outside of the nuts to cylinders instead of just welding the nut to the outside of the cross member? Like you did with the brackets? As far as the bellows/flex question, I only have examples, not really suggestions. My old Saturn has a flex piece right under the engine. I've had it replaced once when there was hole elsewhere that needed replacing. I went with a more expensive and reputable source, and it's been holding up fine for the last 5 or so years. On my Subaru, they use a clamp which includes springs that let it flex a bit. It's a bit fiddly to put on, and I'm a bit scared that I over-tightened one and damaged some threads. However, it seems to be working nearly 2 years later. I really like your attention to detail, and wish I had a water jet machine just so I could help out! Also wondering how long after you are done with this project until you sell it and start a new one. Seems a common thing with builders.

Hi both, regarding the high level of rigidity in your exhaust system design, my advice is “suck it and see” before you spend time and money building-in a contingency that may not be required. I’ve taken this view based on the fact that your tub is separate, and not monocoque therefore you still have opportunities to insulate elsewhere, and that there is no need to allow that much flex in what (is) otherwise an almost solid state construction. This build is very beautiful. Stay safe and happy 😊

The easiest way to avoid the problem of experiencing expansion is to turn your current hangers 90 degrees from their current position and add short links similar to bicycle chain links only larger. This will allow the movement your after without causing the piping to change clearance between the frame and floorboards.

The exhaust looks spectacular, a true work of art. I love the symmetry of it. Looking good... it is going to be a seriously cool car when all finished. One tip for you or anyone reading this... when you cut a threaded rod or bolt short it is helpful to first thread a nut on before making the cut... that way when you take the nut off after making the cut it will chase the threads for you cleaning up the threads so that you can later screw a nut on or thread in the bolt without the end of the threads being all kajingered from making the cut. This is super easy to do and can save a tone of time and headache! Also I may be wrong but it looked like you mounted the exhaust pipes rather firmly to the frame with no flex bellow between the headers and the firm mounting points on the exhaust. This can be risky as the high torque from that LS engine may crack an exhaust manifold when the engine torques over especially if there is any flex in the motor mounts... thanks for the videos. Hahaha at the end of the video you talked about exactly what I was saying about needing flex bellows... YES you need to account for the engine's movement or you will crack your exhaust manifolds!

Hey Guys, I really like your show. Let the exhaust stay the way you built it. If you look under any standard car, they have solid mounts that connect to rubber that connect to another solid mount. But the thing is they use rubber mounts to hold the engine and transmission in place, which has the same flex as the rubber connecters. Since you are using high quality bushings for the engine and transmission, and you are using the snappers which should have about the same flex as your other mounts. The welding of the flange from your headers to your exhaust, you really should run a bead around the outside of the pipe. Because then it would be less likely of the inside weld cracking, and causing a exhaust leak. Carbon Monoxide is a killer. Have a Great Day! Bart

I would highly consider some bellows. The inner/outer dual wall "corrugated" style is what I have on my twin turbo car, just aft of the turbos, and they have held up well.

Yeah. I'd put some bellows in tye exhaust where you indicated. At least that way, you'll control where the break occurs and prolong the time it takes for the engine movement to break it.

Superb job 👍. Taking your time to get the exhaust symetrical has really paid dividends. It looks fantastic. Keep it up.

That exhaust is a work of art. Looks so impressive with the body off. I’m stunned it’s been 7 years! Look forward to the next update. Thanks

put exhaust belows before the muffler, just past the single flange clamps. This will keep the pipes running over the crossmember in place and negate the vibration from the engine

constantly amazed at the quality of your work guys. It's totally appropriate you reference Binky. These are by far the best two project builds on youtube.

I need one of these with an automatic transmission (I am in a wheelchair, hence the auto trans). So very cool and I have always loved the look of the GT6. Great job! Can’t wait to see it done!

I hope you guys are writting all this down on autocad, so if you do another you can simply manufacture the parts instead of trial and error fitting everytime. And then sell your resto mod design to other enthusiasts. Excellent series.

Love how symmetrical this build is. Beautiful work! This is proof that with nothing more then a grinder a welder and alot of patience anything is possible

Would like to see an estimate on the amount of 6in grinding discs , cutting discs and flap wheels that this project has consumed to date. I'm approaching the end of a frame off resto that was nowhere near as complex as this one and i actually wore out a grinder and lost count of the amount of discs i bought.

I wish I could list all the things off that I like about this build, but I am sure I would run out of space to type them! I was working on my exhaust last weekend and it is bloody time consuming! Keep up the awesome work lads.
