No way a bit of paint and some 3dp bits would make the mig fly like that, even with the TV system that has 4 extra servos it floats like a butterfly. Can tell from the sound there was something up with the power system.
@Jazzman-bj9fq2 жыл бұрын
It's probably more than just 'a bit of paint'. You can tell from the closeups at the beginning of the vid that whatever the guy painted or surfaced it with, he pretty much filled in all the foam defects and the normal foam texturing you see on even the $500 price range edf jets would be very noticeable. It looks almost like it was heat wrapped. But all that covering adds much more weight than you might imagine. You add a coat of paint or two to a real life jet, the mass of that paint is just about insignificant to the mass and power of the jet. With a foamie, you can easily apply enough paint and/or glue to increase the overall mass by 15-25% and with no addition of thrust, that's too much to carry around and fly the way it was designed.
@RCPlaneAddict2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. That plane sounds weak on take off. Should have done a power check on the ground for at least 20 seconds wide open.
@all_rc2 жыл бұрын
@RC Plane Addict Appreciate the comments guys. But lets not assume all the preflight checks werent done. I spent 2 days sorting out the plane. Trimming the surfaces. Checked the wiring. Amp draw test. This plane was just too heavy to fly. If you guys dont want to accept that reality, then try it on your own planes. 🤣 I was disappointed with this particular setup because i KNEW it was too heavy to fly. Yet i bit the bullet and took a shot at it. There is NO WAY i would ruin my own credibility by selling this plane to someone else after i realized this thing would not fly as originally designed. I was already planning to just take the electronics out and put them in other planes and just junk the airframe. Or sell it to someone who wanted to put a turbine on it. But who knows how long that would take. Worst that could happen is exactly what happened, and i accepted that well before take off. If you guys dont think paint, filler, epoxy, polyurethane and a load of 3DP parts adds up to excessive weight and definitely affects the plane's ability to fly as designed, then hopefully this video showed exactly that. I literally bought another Mig 29 as soon as i found out someone else from the field had one for sale because i really wanted to see how this model would fly IN STOCK form without all the crap done to this particular model. This is the video of the STOCK Mig 29 i got to replace this heavy one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/maTcq51jiMqVb8U Im fortunate that the previous owner of this stock model took great care of it. It literally looked brand new. He is a Turbine guy and just didnt want to deal with charging batteries for 4 mins of flight anymore.
@jacklets38512 жыл бұрын
@@all_rc I appreciate your ability to admit that it was your fault. Paint and filler really does add up when you paint a plane of this size. I know a guy at my field who had the freewing f22 90mm and he made a full 3D printed canopy but unfortunately it added like a half pound to the plane and he lost it because of that. A lot of people don’t realize what half a pound can do to these planes. I design and build my own planes and have learned just how quickly the thrust to weight ratio can change. I would highly recommend using vinyl cover next time. It weighs almost nothing and gives a perfectly smooth finish and it’s glossy. You can buy it in rolls and it’s just adhesive stick on cover that is super easy to work with and it lasts a long time. It feels heavy in the roll but a majority of the weight is that paper that you peel off if it

My last attempt to save it was to try to nose down and hope it would come out of stall, but it just never recovered.

Yeah that bad boy was hefty. Wouldn't have helped even to make it to the runway, it would have pancaked on the hardtop just as bad. That plane would've have needed alot more thrust but also something like reinforcement with carbon fiber spars through it. You see planes that get modded and they're so heavy when the guys carry them you can see it flexing even then. Whomever you bought it from went way overboard with the paint and all that. These foamies aren't structurally that strong.
@all_rc2 жыл бұрын
For sure. People dont realize how much polyurethane, primer, and paint can add so much weight to a plane. 3DP parts are also taken for granted. The guy from MotionRC crashed his F18 when he replaced the foam ordinance with 3DP parts. Assuming the CG and AUW wouldnt be affected. He fought to save plane after take off. But it was just too much. I should have listened to my gut. But i was just too impulsive seeing it in front of me. Ended up getting 2 of the same thing. Which cost more than a brand new one and a pair of batteries. Maybe this blue plane was being built up for a turbine conversion.
@Jazzman-bj9fq2 жыл бұрын
@@all_rc I'm sure they put at least five layers of paint just to get it the way they wanted and they probably re-painted over mistakes when it just wasn't right for them and yes paint for sure has weight to it and while it can make some parts a little tougher it doesn't add enough strength to make that added weight worth it. With those custom printed parts it's not just the parts but the hot glue or whatever adhesives he slathered on to make it strong increased the weight quite a bit as well. That's why the dude sold it because he knew it was no longer viable to fly. I think some folks who get into rc don't realize how challenging the actual flying is, especially when they get to edfs, and therefore they spend more time in customizing so they can kind of put off the flying AND landing part, lol.
