Custom shift knob for an automatic MINI cooper

Replacing a stock gear shift knob on a 2005 R50 MINI cooper with a custom knob I made myself. This is my first video I have ever filmed and edited. It is a little rough...I know.

YOURE A LIFE SAVER, i spent like $80 on a really nice shift knob for my gf and never figured out that the knob moves freely, i thought it needed a button but thanks to you i can finally use it!!!!!

Agreed with others, not having that button is a hazard as you can now go from D to R and P while just pressing the brake but still moving. The risk is destroying your transmission or losing control of your car if the wheels stop abruptly. When you replace the factory one pop it back on with the button in the ‘not pressed’ position. Do that by putting your finger under the button and use the palm of your hand to pop it down. NOT HAVING THE SHIFTER BUTTON IS DANGEROUS.

false, i just did it and it locks into gears like it normally would just without the need of a button. it will not move freely as if there’s not a lock for the gears

@@jakepollard8093 did you even try to do it 💀 because idk if you seen my comment but i JUST did it not too long ago and it doesn’t stop it from locking either of those, it locks into all gears (park, reverse, neutral and drive). not sure why you’d assume it just freely moves to all different gears. the lady even showed you in the video 😭👍

@@jakepollard8093 it’s far from unsafe, your car will not shift into reverse or park while you’re driving, if it shifts into neutral while you’re driving that’s completely fine it doesn’t harm your car at all 😂 nothing about this is dangerous

Hey Allys, Michael here from Australia, I wanted to thank you very much for your video. Took my Mini Cooper to a transmission workshop today, the gear knob was able to rotate 360 degrees, very bad as I have a few minor disabled driver mods and need that knob stable. Showed mechanic your video after 20 minutes of messing around, easy. Well done and thanks!!

it all depends on your make and model so some people will have more trouble than others but it’s definitely very doable for everybody’s cars!

What happens when you put it in reverse while driving at like let's say 20+mph? I have a BMW 2007 e90 335i. I literally have the same type of release lock in my shift knob. I'm just sketched about it going into reverse while driving

You will ruin your transmission, but I wouldn’t worry about something like that too much.

You should never just push through your automatic selector like that as it can damage it and cause costly repairs also the button is to stop you knocking it up in to reverse without realizing and if your in traffic waiting and you knock it could reverse in to someone if you didn’t realize you had knocked reverse so changing to that Is so dangerous and that the way you have glued it on could snap off during use and cause you problems and if you hit a pot hole or speed hump it could bounce out of selection and go in to neutralize or reverse so so dangerous

My subaru has a shift knob like that with the button that lifts the bar inside it. Easy to change but since the new knob doesn't have the bar in it, when I put the csr in park and turn it off I can't take my keys out of the ignition since the car doesn't know it's in park. This happen to you?

kevin t I think that euros just don't lock into the gear. So you can literally go from drive to reverse without even hitting the brake and being at a complete stop. Can't recommend you do this to be honest.

There should be a disclaimer on this video!! The button is there for a reason! It locks it in gear! Very dangerous overriding it! Also... Why are your nails yellow 🤢

FALSE!!! the button is a small plastic piece that does not lock the heavy metal transmission into the gears, what actually happens is your cars gears will still lock like normal just without the need of a button 😁 you’re welcome to anyone who was scared to do this

@inyowindow Is correct. This increases the chances of putting your car in reverse or park while moving. This mod is a bad idea.

@@jakepollard8093 it’s physically impossible to shift into park or reverse while driving. the only thing you can go into without using your brake is neutral. but even if u do shift to neutral who cares, if u have a muffler delete/ loud car that’s how you can rev without moving
