I wish they'd give us the opportunity to Frankenstein ships, specifically the shuttle. Imagine if shuttle parts were universal and work on any ship. The opposite would be good too. Shuttles could fit most other ship parts and even potentially change its ship class. A shuttle class cockpit would be required but anything else would be fair game. It would be kind of like the uglies from Star wars.

Do solars count as fighters or explorers - or their own special class? Best found in outlaw/pirate systems I suppose - but also as crashed ships in the same systems?

They're their own class and yes, best found in outlaw systems. You do find crashed ones as well.

Been to 20 systems thus far and not seen a solar ship at all let alone customise one.

Make sure you're heading to Pirate / Outlaw systems - they're definitely there!

Are the supercharge slots random when you build your own solar ship? Are they determined by the reactor?

The number of slots should be determined by the engine. The position, were not too sure how that works yet!

One weird as freaking hell detail I noticed (though I don't know how it works) is that when I change the sails shape type the accent colors on the ship change. Does anyone have info on this?

Some people don't like them, but I suppose that's what makes them solar ships.
