You explained it very well. Thanks. I've been doing wheels for myself and members of the AMCA plus some local shops for around 30 years. What I like to do after it's all trued and spokes are ground down is tap on each spoke with the spoke wrench to check the sound I get. Should be all the same. As I mentioned, it's my preference, not everybody's. Good video, thanks again.

Pacific Mike the stories you tell of the motorcycle guys that have made small useful tools for you and sent you parts for bikes are great, have you thought about going to a local engineering firm and having a small production run made of the little useful items such as the camshaft puller, pushrod cover aligners and spoke torque head etc. Low cost but I and I’m sure many others would love them in our tool boxes, not expensive but well engineered and most importantly with your name on the box, low shipping costs when you post them and they would help with the cost of keeping your channel running.

If you can spin a spanner, for sixty seconds worth of a minute's time well spun, or put up with the banter of those who doubt, 'that thing will ever run'. If you can see through your thinking & make your fingers prove you right, (& spot those two imposters, of over & under tight.) If you can fit the gearing, that Mike now has in mind, through skilful engineering, or big hammer & strong mind. Then the world is yours enjoy it, for it won't come back again, the march of time will ensure it, despite you, the bike or Zen. (And it beats just sitting on one's ever expanding donkey eh? : )

Great vid brother mike,great advice its the small details that end up being a huge deal in the end, speaking of advice ,last sat on our ride a drunk driver crossed into our lane on a hard curve, my 20 year old was in front ,he pushed real hard on the inside right curve of his handle bar which shot him hard left, something i taught him early on ,it saved his life but going into the ditch he flipped her, front end totally trashed tank and back fender ,hes ok no serious injuries but could have lost his life,so anyone out there that knows any new riders share the things with them that u know to fo if things get bad out there, u could save a life ,were all in this beautiful motorcycle world together. Ride hard ,ride safe ,be well

I go by the manufacturer of the spokes. Is the rim steel or aluminum? Is it a front wheel, or a rear wheel? Is it a big radical engine or a stocker? I don't mean to avoid giving an answer, but, I consult over the phone, with the manufacturer of the spokes.

Thanks Mike. Couldn't find a 6mm crows foot wrench anywhere, so I bit the bullet and bought a PitPosse spoke torque wrench. Unbelievably it was the only kit that included the 6mm size crows foot that fits most Harley spokes. My next problem is that my Harley service manual does not show a torque spec for my front wheel spokes, but rather uses the term "snug" lol!😅. Being that I'm a torque wrench kind of guy, I did lots of research and sounds like the consensus is 40-50 inch-pounds on the front 21" wheel spokes. Sound about right to you?

Probably. Not sure. Don't know who made your spokes. I generally use Buchannan Spokes and torque according to them.

Mike, I had my wheel relaced about 20 years ago. Just recently when I put on a new tire I noticed measurable corrosion around the inside of the wheel between the rubber rim strip and the top of the spoke adjustment nipples. After I clean the rust off what should I do to seal around the spoke nipples and rim so this doesn't happen again?
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
Mask it off and paint it with a good, rust inhibiting paint. It will help stretch its life. We are usually the cause of this condition by blasting the wheels with water. It goes right in around the spoke nipples and sits there doing its damage. It's an ongoing battle and you need to carefully inspect to be sure the strength of the rim is not compromised yet. I've seen spotlessly cleaned rims that were beautiful. But, further inspection showed a hole all the way through the rim.
@motoshedman4 жыл бұрын
Copper paste or some bicycle assebly butter. For example shimano butter/ grease. Also good to dip the threads of the spokes in some grease to prevent them and nipples from rusting together before assembly. That will also give correct torque spec on spoke tension. You can build good rims without all this of course.

another great video I always seem to learn something watching you. have you ever used duct tape instead of a rim rubber on your wheels?

Yes.

After grinding, the spokes and nipples rust quickly because the plating has been removed. Follow up after grinding with some good paint.

Good point. I normally use stainless spokes, rather than chromed steel.

Hey Mike, wadda ya generally torque a 16" old star hub rear wheel to, and would it be the same for a 21front? Also the book says to seat the nipples with a flat punch, is that necessary, do you do it? I'm getting ready to do the new wheels for the 50. Thanks, John
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
Hello John. Torque recommendations on spokes come from the manufacturer. Seating the spokes with a punch works very well, but, you seat the heads of the spokes into the hub, not the nipples.

Mike, would grinding as you did unbalance the rim in any way? My soft tail has spokes and when I had the tires replaced that I know of all they did is add weight to balance and most likely did not check the spokes or grind anything down, Just asking for next time. Thanks in advance.

When you respoke a wheel and you are finished, the ends quite often protrude. They need to be ground down to the surface of the nipple, so they won't poke holes in rhe tubes.

Does torqueing the spokes take the wheel out of true at all ?
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
It can. Rechecking is fine. If it seems like I spend a lot of time doing a wheel, it's because I do.

Hey Mike! I think I saw you on a tv show last night called Car Masters. Some dude was asking about a blower motor with a bunch of bikers at a roadside diner and there was a frame with you standing there. Was that you? My wife and I have been debating if it was you or not. Love the videos and appreciate how you respond to all the comments.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, yah, that was me. Beige shirt, black leather cap, shades, standing at the bar. I even spoke. The guy said he had a Honda Goldwing he wanted to trade and I referred to it as a "Leadwing."

This may be a stupid question.but after trueing the wheel does the torquing not mess up the setting?
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
It can. You need to recheck and retorque as necessary. You can drive yourself craz y too. Don't do that. We're being as accurate as possible. We're doing it better than we ever knew we could. Maybe even "overkill."
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
That was not a "stupid" question.

Mike, I understand the consequence of undertorqueing spokes, but what’s the consequence of overtorqueing ( I mean not hugely, but some)? Reason I ask, I didn’t have an inch pound wrench when I did my Triumph wheels, might have gone a little strong cuz I didn’t want to be light-maybe I should go back and get them exact?
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
We all used to do them strictly by feel. Now, we try to be more exacting. If the manufacturer of the spokes has a spec, adhere to it. "Even" is the most important thing. If they're too tight, they can pull through the rim. Again, the company that makes the parts is who you should consult.
