I've trued plenty of wheels in my 70 years, and this gentleman Mike Has It Down. My bicycles take a beating and need re-laced regularly & trued on my stand. The Superglide has seen many 'adjustments' in its 45 years under me too. My spoke tension gauge is helpful, too. Ringing spokes works too, whatever.
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
Thank You. All the ways of doing it are legitimate. If you have a nice, true wheel with even torque all the way round, it's a great wheel. Wait 'til I balance one on the channel and we get to find out how everyone does that.
@BEEBEE1593 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. I was a cyclist, riding road bicycles long distances, before I got into motorcycles; and I true my own bicycle wheels. Truing bicycle wheels is exactly the same as truing motorcycle wheels; and truing bicycle wheels is a good way to learn, less expensive and less critical.

A suggestion to prevent the "too close pointer squeal": a piece of chalk, or soapstone. Set your pointer with a nominal 1/4 inch gap to the rim, then lay the chalk or soapstone against the side of the pointer. Slowly spin your rim, and slowly advance the chalk toward it. Once the chalk hits a high spot, it leaves a mark, but no scratches. Adjust, repeat ad nauseam. Granted, a dial indicator is still the right tool for final accuracy, but the chalk mark method will get you WAY close, and not endanger your rim finish in any way. I agree Mike, truing will teach you patience, or teach you the manly art of cursing at the top of your voice and tossing tools across the shop, rofl.

Mike... Great job on the wheel build... and I like your toque wrench and planing to make one for a bicycle spoke nipple size.. I have built a few thousand bicycle wheels over the last 35 plus years.. I have a few tricks.. To get the wheels centered a quick way is to set the indicator rod on the side of the rim remove it from the stand leaving the axles in place and flip the wheel from side to side...if the indicator is in the same spot you know the wheel is centered.. I have brazed a 1/4 ball bearing on the indicator pointer and it keeps the rim from getting scratched and it is easy to see the gap between it and the rim surface.. I rub bees wax on the threads of the spokes and it lubricates it a little when you thread it on to the nipple and eventually acts like a mild form of Locktite.. Linseed oil works well too...
