The big question is how did they get in there 🤔🤔🤔🤔

It's no longer an Air Filter; it's a Bird Filter. Imagine explaining how a bird got sucked into your auto engine.

Well, if he doesn't want to be a mechanic anymore, he could take over the counts Dracula job on Sesame Street.

My guess is a weasel got them, dragged them up there to eat/stay warm. I have issues with the things on my farm here in Michigan, they like to get large numbers of birds and stuff them places, I just lost 15 pigeons and 2 hens to one.

No bird feces in there too. I’d have to agree.

I'm a big bird lover and mechanic so this ticks two boxes for me. Here's what I think: Birds will sometimes all pile together in a hollow space (cavity in a tree, drainpipe, birdhouse, etc.) in bitter cold weather to get out of the cold and share their body warmth so they can get through the night. I've not heard of Robins (they seem to all be Robins) doing this but it's entirely possible. I've seen pictures of smaller birds like nuthatches piled into a birdhouse on a cold night, with as many as 15-20 in one average size birdhouse. When you weigh under an ounce, anything you can do to stay warm is reasonable. If a bird finds its way into the air intake tube opening, others might follow. Looks like the intake coming into the air box is large enough for a bird as large as a Robin to fit through without getting sucked in. Once inside, if the car were driven before they got out, the vacuum from the engine intake could be strong enough to prevent them from getting out, especially once up to speed. They may then have perished from heat. People living in colder areas could prevent similar issues by putting heavy screening (e.g., 1/4" holes) over the intake to prevent such entry but not restrict airflow. Of course, you might want to then check periodically to make sure it doesn't have leaves or other foreign debris causing any restriction. I've seen cool bugs and evidence of rodents in air cleaner boxes and have seen birds stuck in grilles, but never something like this.

well written. thank you.

Just realised there’s no bird feces in there. As someone already commented something must’ve dragged them up there for later consumption.
