Have to give Cadillac props for designing 97sts rims. Had one blow out at 80mph after a scrapper truck ahead of me dropped a BMX bike out it's bed. In the fast lane nobody would move so I went pretty fast for pretty far on the rim to get to the right side of the road out of traffic. Took it off and walked for miles to get a new tire thankfully a kind fella gave me a ride as he seen me walking with a bare rim passing by the scrap yard, he seen I wasn't trying to scrap it knowing I had to of had a flat. The tire shop just ground down a couple rough areas of the aluminum rim and the tire was perfect after mounted. Thought for sure the rim would be bent.

I remember about the year 2000 or so I was going down the highway, and a car going in the opposing lane had a turkey fly up and it struck their windshield, causing the windshield to cave in. I flipped a U-turn to see if they needed assistance. They used my cell phone to call a relative and the lady passenger thought she might have glass in her eye. Turkeys can cause a lot of damage to a car. While we were there waiting, a dog came along and took the turkey carcass away.

2:46 I encountered this exact same problem with a guy that had over $15,000 of audio equipment installed in his car. Discovered the fuse was wrapped in aluminium foil and when I asked why he said - *"My technician friend told me that if a fuse blows, just put a larger one in till it stops blowing."* Told him "well you either misunderstood the instructions, or your friend is an idiot." Told him this is how cars burst into flames, after discovering that all the cables behind the dashboard, had been shorted, resulting in insulation being burnt off. I showed him the damage, disconnected the battery, then told him he needs a new wiring harness, and not to drive the vehicle till the wires are sorted. Around two weeks later, there was a news article on TV, where a guy's house, car and nearly all his family (him, wife and two kids) killed in the blase. Place looked familiar then I saw his face. He was also a Painter that had not removed any of the accelerants out of his garage, away from his car as I had instructed. So his stupidity and inability to listen nearly killed 4 people. Luckily everyone escaped. I later called the guy that had originally asked me to look at his friends car, then told him how much of an idiot, his friend is, then added further information on why this happened.

Had a tire shop leave an alignment cam bolt completely untightened for several years on my work truck. Multiple appointments, 2 different pairs of new front tires and nearly sliding off the icy highway twice, I finally discovered it myself while changing a tire. About 10 years ago I had a 2003 Cobra, I usually do my own work but I was going on a trip and I left it at a WELL respected socal mustang shop for suspension installation. When I got it back it drove wobbly and rattled a lot, so I put it on my buddies lift and they hadn't installed any of the nuts on the hardware. Rear struts were only saved from falling out by the sway bar, and the fronts weren't much better. They had the balls to tell me to drive it back in so they could fix it.

My car was shaking like hell on the highway after getting my brakes flushed, and it turns out the brake shop forgot to tighten the wheel lug bolts all they way, and they came loose over a 2 hour drive. By that point I could rotate them with my hand, so I got them as tight as I could with a socket wrench and drove 10 minutes (at 45MPH with hazards in the right lane) to the nearest tire shop to get them tightened fully, cause I was in the middle of nowhere.

And another 60s unit that I picked up for parts. Those cars were so easy to work on. There’s a book published in 1969 called “How To Keep Your VW Alive and Well” . Hilarious yet tremendously helpful.

The really bad brake rotors were a realistic reminder of something to me. A couple days ago my daughter came to visit. She pulled up beside me and I told her to look at something with me. Her right front rotor looked bad...really bad. I asked her how her brakes been and she said ''they are starting to make a grinding sound''. I gave her a dad's ''yeah right, turn your radio down...it's been grinding a while''. I then lead her to the left side with a nice shiny somewhat usable rotor. The showed her the right side and made her feel the badly worn sharp edged rotor. I told her if her husband wanted to do the work I'd show him how easy brakes are on a half ton Chevy axle. He came to my shop where I had all the new parts and was surprised that he himself could replace the front brakes in less than 2 hours. True quality son inlaw time.

I think my car made a couple people feel like that. I don't know if my car (Nissan Altima 2008 coupe) is just that hard to repair or if they weren't as competent as one would hope, but I went in to get the wiper linkage replaced after it broke, took 3 hours. Went in to get the power steering pump changed, took 5 hours... I was only charged the estimated time both times, so all I lost was time, but dam...

Many years ago, late sixties or early seventies, I got a phone call from my brother and his friend saying they couldn't start the friend's car. They'd been trying for hours. The vehicle in the bay for a "blue light on the dash" reminds me of one of the times I realized I was a mechanic before realizing I was a mechanic. Maybe 5 years back I was struggling with addiction, one of my friends had another friend with a car stopping by to take us to get "supplies" but when she showed up she wouldn't go anywhere because of a light on her dash. I got in to take a look, turned out she hit the switch to turn traction control off. We got the bag.

In Germany the TÜV is every 24 months but you are usually asked to come in every year for the main inspection by the local garage. Never would any vehicle with a "bolted the frame back together with a piece of metal" drive around for more than a few weeks without being noticed by the police. Roughest cases that I've seen on the road are completely rusty cars.

@@brianstratton8767 The state doesn't make much of anything and neither do the shops on the inspection. They did make money on findings though. Lots of borderline calls in their favor...
