I mean they can run for a VERY long time without an oil change, but the drawbacks are decreased engine efficiency and possible wear down due to foreign particles getting in, which in turn leads to major engine damage. It also makes it very difficult to change and recycle the oil when it has been in use for too long. As long as the oil is doing its primary function of lubricating, then it'll last quite a while.

I drove it 12 miles to my mechanic in Huntington Beach, he quoted me 3200 for a new engine install, I said no and then drove it 12 miles back to Anaheim to sell it to Pick Your Part because they said they'd pay me 450 if it drove on its own power. People today think the only thing you need to do in order to drive a car is put the key in and step on the gas pedal. A class on how to jack a car up, how to look under the car and how to change the oil and filter. I find it is a game changer to buy a whole case of oil filters at one time. If the first oil filter fits then the other 11 will fit. You will be amazed how many times I've bought oil filters or other parts from auto parts sores/NAPA to find out they don't fit and belong to a completely different car.

5:32 For one, always keep a fire extinguisher in your car. Not something we want to use but it is a necessity. Obviously at this point the fire may be too big but 1) it doesn’t hurt to try with the extinguisher anyway 2) you can prevent it from getting this big in the first place 3) after you use a fire extinguisher or after it is 10 years old have the extinguisher recharged or replaced, based on the discretion of a licensed fire marshal 4) have your extinguisher inspected every 1-10 years, you don’t want to find out during a fire that it doesn’t work 5) it should be easily accessible during a fire where you have few seconds or less to unstrap and grab or whatever and useable by a non-trained person but you should train others regardless 6) it should be in enough quantity or big enough to put out a fire 7) optional but still recommended: you may even want to practice using some in a drill. Go to your fire pit and pour some gasoline on it. Light it on fire and have someone else (if other person is present) set a stopwatch and possibly video it. See how efficiently you can take the extinguisher out, yell for others to evacuate (do this drill once a week, fortnight, or month because too long you may forget and too often may cause neighbor annoyance, if you don’t have neighbors then do this as much as you want) and put the fire out. How many extinguishers did it take? And even if you don’t do the stopwatch and video to review your mistakes, the practice will do you good in the future. And remember that in the real event you will call FD but not in practice.

@@benjaminacosta2582I thought it was some sort of ground issue as soon as I saw that video. Not super in to cars, but I had a early 90s Sony str-av570 home stereo receiver that had a random light on the front blink and a clicking noise when shut off, and it would make a loud popping noise through the speakers when powered on. The tuner also seemed to randomly stop working for a few seconds sometimes, and only pick up whatever station it wanted to. Other than that, it functioned perfectly and sounded great through nice speakers. The problem was a single loose ground screw!!! Faulty grounds seem to always cause these “item X is possessed. Please fix” kinds of issues.

He had built “fender flares” that stuck out about four inches. It wasn’t smoothed out or anything. I don’t know if there was any kind of structure under the bondo or not. “I did the bodywork myself” he announced proudly. I wonder how long it was before all this custom bodywork started falling off. 🤔 Oh well, at least it wasn’t a 69 Camaro. I wish I had pictures but this was years ago, before everyone had cell phones with cameras.

I made a wall of shame for our shop as customers walk up a ramp to the service door, they see many pictures of mistreatment and failures, with probable issues/symptoms to be seen/felt/heard with each picture. Its funny when customers recognize a picture from their own tractor. Tends to calm their anger before coming in and blaming the equipment for their failures as an operator. Hydraulic oil gets shiny when something is wrong. Some customers will say, "thats break in." I usually say, "sir, your tractor has 1,000 hrs on it and you haven't changed the hydraulic filters since 200 hrs. Thats not break in, thats something broken." The excuses are ridiculous.

I have an 89 Grand Marquis (same thing; 100% parts interchangable) that seized from lack of oil when I shut it off immediately after I bought it. All I had to do was add oil and flush it a couple times, and it's been running fine for 7 years. Just has a lifter tick. I discovered that the oil had not been changed in, yes, ten years. It still ran like garbage until I flushed it twice. Then I had so much more power than I was used to that I ended up drifting sideways through an intersection later that day. 302 doesn't mess around. Still have it. Every time something goes out, I replace it with something better. It'll be getting a new transmission (because that's fried too; first and second gear no longer exist) and driveshaft once the weather is decent enough for me to do it. Still starts on the first crank. I have a '99 Explorer wreck that I plan on swapping the entire powertrain from some day, and many other things. I believe it’s a 2003ish CTS. To drop the tank, the entire rear subframe needs to be dropped as well. It’s literally something like 8-10 hours for a fuel pump. This guy did a *really* bad job, but if you’re careful and seal the floor back up when you’re done, it’s perfectly fine. (Obviously not an option for proper shops though)

Exhaust welded to rebar - Are exhaust hangers too expensive? Exhaust welded to the frame - why? Two catalytic converters welded together - because burning up a few hundred dollars over bad welding skills is fun?

50 years ago, owners manuals had a section showing how to adjust the valve’s. Now the first 20 pages are warnings to “ not drink the antifreeze “. I actually had a rental car with a tag on the steering wheel that had a little cartoon showing how to turn the key. If you have to be told not to drink automotive fluids, you should not be allowed to drive.
@dunebasher1971
@dunebasher1971 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, no, that whole "50 years ago owners' manuals said..." thing is BS. Owners' manuals did NOT routinely show you how to adjust the valves, and manuals today do NOT spend the "first 20 pages" telling you not to drink the battery acid/coolant/whatever other fluid. BTW, if your rental car story is true, you might want to consider that keyless ignition systems have been around long enough now that there will be people who've never driven a car that was started by turning a key.

@@dunebasher1971 yes. When I first started learning how to drive, all I had was push-button start. It wasn’t until I got my own car that I finally learned how to do the key ignition.
