To be fair, that truckie with the bent rims probably did what he had to do. It could have been days before someone could come to his aid and bring along new tires/rims. You never want to be stuck in the outback for longer than can be helped. If you can do a bodge repair to get you to the next truck stop/town/cattle staton, do it. And stay in contact with either your employer or the Authoritys so they know what you're doing and where you are. And above all, never leave your vehicle.

@@j4y167 No, never been outback, or a truckie. Most of my advice was either learned or I've pickec up along the way. As for being a truckie, it's a solid career for a young bloke, even more so if you haven't settled down with family yet. It's a hard job, long hours. Can make some coin, but it's not going to make you rich. Unless you end up with your own trucking business. More so, you'll end up with a license you can use pretty much anywhere in Australia, and quite possibly pick up a few other trade tickets like forklift operator. As for working outback, unless you're from the outback, stick to coastal work until you're nice and comfortable doing long hauls between states. Then try for a position with a company that works the outback. Then I'm sure you'll really learn what a long haul is. lol

@@j4y167 Known a fair few truckies, it's brutal af and you have to meet tight schedules in arduous and sometimes dangerous conditions. Brings blokes down to smoking ice or doing speed just to keep awake on the long rides and meet deadlines better, which ends up swallowing the decent part of your income and leaving you with nothing. Many blokes ik have gone down that road Cycoholic is right tho, if you're gonna be a truckie do coastal work. That's the fun part of being a truckie by miles, going places and seeing things, and the inate freedom of travel is always awesome

The pipe had suffered very little damage, but obviously the tire could not be repaired. But when we showed the customer what we'd found in the tire his reaction was not what we'd expected and made it ridiculously funny. It's an odd motoring-cultural thing; In the UK, tyre-rotation is not something that happens. The fronts worn out, replace the fronts; the rears are shot, replace the rears. I've seen USA car-sales training videos selling 'free tyre rotation' as part of The Package. But, we also get by with straight-fours, while you chaps like your V6's and V8's. (Smiley Face)
@markh.66872 жыл бұрын
@@terencejay8845 Hello Terence. We rotate tires/tyres in the US to equalize wear, especially since due to weight and balance, modern front-drive cars wear the front tires faster, leaving a perfectly good set of rear tires otherwise. So rotating them attempts to equalize wear, and extend the life (especially if you always buy a set of four when buying new tires). Of course it also gives the repair shops some money, but I know people who rotate their own tires at home. Interestingly, the British Tyre Manufacturers Association website has no information on tyre rotation whatsoever.
@nerd1000ify2 жыл бұрын

the clogged BMW engine reminds me of one we had at the auto shop. a BMW520, second gen, came in for TÜV (germany's bi-annual checkup) and some minor repairs. we found out the last oil change was before the west was won, so after the repair we talked the owner into an oil change... big mistake. poor engine survived that 3 minutes before it died slowly and silently. after removing the valve cover we found even more gunk and crusts than in the video. there was even a "bridge" across the timing wheel! seeing the brakes worn down beyond anything and further explains the many crashes seen in american dashcam videos, as many were situations where slowing down would have avoided it. I got my first car when I was 16 back in the early 2000's, it was an early 90's thunderbird. Back then I knew I had to get an oil change every so often but I wasn't aware of how important it is to check your oil frequently, I went about 2 months without ever checking it so one day it started to knock. My young stupid self said "I'm sure it's fine, I'll ask dad about it later..." so later turned into a week and it started to smoke. That's when I called my dad while I was stuck on the side of the road with a smoking engine, an hour later he arrived and before he even looked at it he sighed and said "son, when was the last time you checked your oil?" 🤣. He's never seen me do it and I've never mentioned changing it so he immediately put 2 and 2 together. The bearings were ruined and need to be replaced, but it was a 4.6L v8 which isn't a very common engine size so it was an expensive fix, cheaper to get a new car actually which is what I wound up doing. This time with zero help from my parents lol, I had to spend all my savings on a down payment and took out a loan. So yeah, that BMW owner was very lucky the engine lasted as long as it did. People always talk about German engineering and how good they are, if that car ran as long as it did without an oil change then I would say all of that talk is justified!

That's insane... New guy was definitely unsupervised and 100% green. I remember being a little weary of my first small sidewall tires after doing lots of quick seating 70 series tires... I asked how much further to go and a more experienced guy showed me not to be scared. This must have been a very bad tech, or a new tech in a sh*try shop where he was afraid to ask.

@@volvo09 Kid messed up a low profile mount. It happens, and yes, it should have been caught by another tech or when the tires were being balanced. Your comment about 70 series tires though? It kind of makes me wonder about the lowest profile you’ve mounted. I’m just curious because a 70 series is hardly common anymore.

@@dirgeofdementia I was referring to the easy to seat truck tires, or old sedans... They pop right on like butter and seat very easily. My personal smallest? Probably your average "performance subcompact" tire these days... They were for the Volvo 850R models at a volvo dealer, they were 205 or 215 45 18’s. Not a wide tread by today's standards, but that made the sidewall quite short. I remember mounting them and being a bit surprised at having to go to like 60 psi to seat the bead...

@@volvo09 I was just curious because I’ve been working in the automotive field since 2003 and only ever see 70 series on anything other than SUVs and minivans that are 15 years old or so anymore. I’m kind of glad carmakers transitioned to larger rims. Not only does it look nicer but it also prevents you from having to rely on the bead blaster or cheetah to seat high profile tires because the sidewalls got smashed in.
@volvo092 жыл бұрын
Yeah these were older Volvos, it was back in the early 00’s. Think of those 90's Buicks with tall sidewalls. The Volvo 240 wagon actually had the highest sidewall tire I've ever known about on a car... 185 R14 the tire didn't even have a sidewall aspect ratio, the sidewall was as high as the tread width! But I remember those became impossible to find at a reasonable price, so we'd fit something else like 195 75 R14... Or something that kept the spedomerer accurate... It's been too long. But they were great to learn on because they were so easy. You could sometimes spin them on without even using the rotate function on the tire machine. And if you had the bead up too high on the rim (on the bead seat) then you could see how to work the tire on without gouging a rim. I saw a few people get hung up on that when handed a tougher tire as their learning job. But that's not always easy these days, like you said even grocery getter crossovers have "low profile" tires. But tire machines have also gotten better also. But I haven't done tires in a while... Only time I do them is when I visit a friends shop to mount my own.

Some insight if those tires are Goodyear assurance reliants, they all are doing that you have to get them to 80psi to fully seat

I've definitely seen the antler in the tire. Mainly on farm tractors though. 😎

Damn. That's an expensive tire.

Antlers are a horrible problem on farm equipment. Just this year we had one go right thrust the tread and out the sidewall on our sprayer.

I work at a car repair place. We see some of this every week. We had a guy with a broken hydraulic brake line tell us he was going to drive that car 30 miles round trip to work THEN bring it back for us to repair. We finally convinced him to NOT take the car back, get a ride, and have us or somebody repair it.
