Hertz has a fleet size of 615,600 vehicles. If each vehicle is conservatively rented only once per month, that is 7,400,000 transactions. 165 cases out of 7,400,000 is 0.002%, which is extremely rare but still unacceptable to those affected.

When I returned a Hertz rental in Maryland before flying back home to Idaho, I asked for a written receipt. They replied, "We don't give written receipts....we'll email a receipt to you." A couple weeks later back in Idaho I received a letter from Hertz saying that if I didn't return their rental car they were going to report it stolen. I never received an email receipt from them and I had nothing to prove I had returned the car. After a few days of telephoning back and forth, and not being able to sleep, they finally acknowledged one of their employees in Maryland had failed to file the correct paperwork and they were in possession of the car. What a nightmare.....but at least I didn't get arrested!

The officer did not say he "_would_ have killed him," instead, he said "someone could have been killed." As for pulling their guns, the officers have certain protocols for certain types of calls, and the reasons are often written in blood. You are right, however, they do need to stop pulling their guns so often. Once a firearm is not in stowage, the risk of injury or death goes way up.

I only dealt with Hertz once, I was waiting for my new car so I rented a car for them for a week. After I returned it a few days later I received a bill in the mail stating that I needed to pay for four new tires because I caused the new tires that they just put on to go bald. How???? I called them and what happened was the dealer scheduled the bald tires to be replaced the day I picked up my rental but because I came 30 minutes early that day they never got replaced and the dealer forgot to reschedule it. So in their system it showed them as replaced, but they still wanted to charge me. After several phone calls they agreed to drop it because I was like how did yall knowingly rent me a car with tires that needed to be replaced. I was young so I didn't know how bald tires looked like and how dangerous that was. The worst part is that those tires been bald for awhile they keep rotating them, so all four of them needed to be replaced. I never used them again.

This is also on the cops for not properly doing there job. It’s not that hard to just pull over a vehicle and tell the driver the situation and asked to see a receipt, especially if the driver is complying with your orders and not being a threat. Police do this too often where they take a witness complaint about someone or something and think they’re 100% right.

used to work for these big rental car companies. its a mess all around. plenty of fraud from the customers (fake DL's/credit cards, etc) and plenty of shenanigans from management. its so busy, they just want whatever is on the lot to get rented, a lot of times things like this get "missed" (oops). usually if the car is not returned on time and is considerably late with no contact from customer there is an internal "repo" dept that will hunt down the car and get it. if that fails, they'll involve the local police.
