Hi, I love how those hidden pleats added practicality and mobility (and fun!) without compromising on the more fitted silhouette you were envisioning. I move a lot, so that's one of my biggest concerns with any garment.
@NoraMurrell Жыл бұрын
These 1930s designs are fast becoming my favorite skirts. They just....move so well!
@MeMe-Moi Жыл бұрын
I love the look of 1930s skirts, but early 1940s skirts are more practical for my lifestyle. So I make 1940s most of the time because being able to get in and out of vehicles without falling or ripping my skirt is a necessary life requirement that those wonderful 1930s skirts just don't meet for me. So, I would add make sure your fashion is practical for your lifestyle or the clothes you make won't leave the closet very often (at least in my experience

This. All of this. Everything I wear. Everything I sew and create. I want it to live in my closet with Purpose and to Match what it is that I'm doing.
@bastetilicious Жыл бұрын
That skirt looks amazing! You look amazing in it! :) You're also not the only heretic who doesn't want pockets in everything. Pockets with all the stuff people want to put in them (phones, wallets, kitchen sinks...) distorts the clean lines of a design!
@impishrebel5969 Жыл бұрын
The gripe is because women's fashion include tiny and fake pockets where they could and should be placed in and the removal is due to cheap companies producing cheap product and selling it like it's haute couture. Tiny pockets can barely fit in my thumb, what makes you think we ever expect to fit perfectly reasonable wants like wallets or phones, much less kitchen sinks? I mean how very dare anyone want to put their forms of currency in a pocket! Form fitting vintage fashion like this skirt usually have a companion piece that has pockets, like a jacket or blazer to put on when you go out so it's not like you have or need to distort lines on it.
@NoraMurrell Жыл бұрын
"like it's haute couture" THIS. All of this. I want functional clothing that does the absolute best job that the clothing can do for the purpose that it has. If I'm wearing jeans? I want a functional true pocket for a phone that is also flattering to the shape of the garment. If I'm wearing this skirt? I've got a purse.
@NoraMurrell Жыл бұрын
HAHAHAHA. The kitchen sink.
@downtoearthsewing Жыл бұрын
I often skip pockets because of that. I have put them in on some dresses and they look fine empty, but putting anything other than a little hanky will distort the lines.

First comments about 'body parts are not fashion' are completely right on! I can get so frustrated at the mall, a 70 y.o. woman who wants to be able to wear a skirt and sit without showing everything I was born with, and finding little to nothing appropriate. That's why I'm taking up sewing - for a hand-made wardrobe. (Wish me good luck!). The insides that are fraying - there is a light weight lace product that you can use to bind the seam edges - it takes time but is well worth the investment in time and materials. You have a beautiful hand-made skirt! Well done!

I wish you nothing but Luck! Sew On! I'll be taking some lace to the rough edge some time this week. this skirt is too nice to not keep the inside nice

If you interline your garments with a woven fabric, even simple muslin like the studios use, they will be stabilized and won't stretch like your other skirt. It also guards against wrinkles, keeps the garment cleaner/ easier to wash and easier to sew/ hem. You're doing great! Bravo! 👏😊

Thank you! And yes, interlining skills are coming. I am so not done with my sewing journey.

That description pretty much covered all of the things. 😊 I totally agree with you. The 1930s have got such interesting skirts, and yet, are so very overlooked. The 19teens also have very interesting skirts that are largely glossed over. So glad you're here doing this! These little beauties need to be brought back. Lovely!

I think that my advice is that you start with a genuine flat 2D you on paper, something that you like, with ease that you like, really embrace this concept of you, and then you go from there. A well fitted item will always compliment you. You probably have more range than you realize. This is 100% why I'm drafting patterns. mrsdepew.com/haslam
