@@whyparkjiminnotridejimin It's called Baumgartener's Restorations. He an art conservator and he's like ASMR of art restoration. He only uploads about once a fortnight but he has a huge following. He takes you through the entire conservation process and it's riveting. The best part is when he takes off the old glaze or something a past, shoddy conservator has painted over it to "fix" a loss of paint, and you see the real painting underneath, how it was meant to be seen. Try watching some. It's fascinating.

I’m crying...the last painting where you painted the dragon and the hero was the same print and frame my Grandmom had at her house above her sofa and I used to stare and dream about the beautiful scenery when I was a kid and you painting the dragon and adventurer made it that much more amazing! I wish I could have this! When my Grandmom passed away my sisters went to her house before I got there and threw the canvas in the trash I was heartbroken. Anyway great work! As someone who previously worked in a opshop/thrift shop we had to throw heaps of artwork away. Due to damage or children's artwork ect. @@CrypticPara I always researched the artist to the best I can. From Facebook to google to Instagram if they have signed their work with their full name. But most of the time we can't find the artist. I advise all artists to put their full name on the back of the artwork and frame and their social media in chance of helping them get recognition. I also would say the artist should be upset with the donatee than the person who bought it. I'm an artist and I know it would suck so bad if my work ended up somewhere that might not be cared for.

I did with this with a large print called "The Proposal" (one of those generic, sweet, semi-Edwardian things). Made it totally gothic, with maggots dripping from the young man's bouquet, a ghost at the piano, shadowy hands outside the window, the sidetable dissolving in tentacles....my children were enamored and would just sit and stare at it, lol. Something about making horror art out of pieces like this is just so satisfying.

I love this concept. Thrift stores get lots of paintings. Most are very outdated, mass produced pieces. If no one buys them, they eventually go in the trash. I mean what’s better? To landfill it, or repurpose it? As an artist, and someone who tries to be be eco friendly, I say repurpose.

It seems like there are a lot of mixed feelings in the comments about painting on another artists pieces, but I think reimagining art isn’t a problem. He wasn’t ruining nor improving, he was changing the subject, and if someone did something like this to my art no longer in my possession I’d be interested in the result. Art is subjective, and the value/beauty between a million dollar masterpiece and a ten cent print ultimately depends on the eye of the viewer.

Living in a household of artists here. You have 3 votes for "Cool!" and 1 vote for "I feel bad for the artists whose paintings he just painted over." I am in the "Cool" group. I told my compassionate artist daughter that very often those paintings are just $10-$15 pieces of art that someone whipped up in less than an hour, and possibly the result of a painting class, or after watching a Bob Ross tutorial. (I'm a bit biased though because I repaint collectors' dolls for a living, and I'm always painting over someone else's work.) I particularly love the dragon you made. I'm an art teacher for middle and high school, and I'm thinking that this style of painting would be a cool project for my art students.

How is he so bold with his strokes?! I'm always terrified of it not being perfect that I cant even start

Try hand stability training. The purpose is to train you so that you’re confident with your lines and won’t need to make so many strokes. Start with drawing a 2” straight line (no ruler) then go over it about 8x without making the line any thicker. Do that about 10x. Then again but about a 4” (or half the width of paper) line 10x again. Then again, but across the full length of paper, 10x. Next do the same thing with arcs, circles, waves and ovals. Fill up an entire 8.5x11 piece of paper. Use a felt tip pen, no erasing. Practice, practice, practice and you’ll be more confident when making your own bold strokes. Good luck!

What I usually do is just go straight into it. If it looks good, it works! But if it looks absolutely horrendous, it can only get better from there. ;) Confident strokes make the painting.

NGL, watching paintings getting painted on was painful for me. Knowing how much time and effort goes into them. If someone painted in something I’ve done, I’d be devastated. The prints didn’t bother me at all, though. Edit to add: The actual additions themselves were great. The dragon was awesome and really fit the painting.

Definitely possible to appreciate the idea while disliking the execution. I'd be really upset if someone painted over a piece I'd spent hours on- I'd genuinely rather it was thrown out. That said, I'd like to try this digitally one day.

I have the feeling these paintings come from mass-producing studios where artists actually paint many copies which are sold to hotels and businesses. In the 80's, I went to some home art parties where they sold paintings like this: actual hand painted oil on canvas cheap-ish "original" art work.
