You used regular Rit instead of synthetic. Tape was no bueno for this demo ... 6 1/2 hours?. But, the shoe looks like, what we call in the nail industry, _cartoon_ color. Came out nice. Should have 'cartooned' them. Thanks for this video (although I see it's been about a year since.

Use Vasaline on the parts you dont want dyed. It works

This didn't work because the Hot water melted the glue on the tape allowing the dye to get in. When you did it before you dyed the entire shoe or what you put it in was not boiling hot water. Try painting the midsole white.

If you didn’t put acetone on the bottom you could’ve wiped it down with acetone and cleaned it right off

Well the dye got through the tape, because the water was boiling hot, thus the tape loosens up and allows the dye to go through, it happens broh ...
