Great tips ! Never thought of covering the stripper so it doesn’t dry out ! After washing the rust converter off with water i always wipe the surface over with metho as it pulls the moisture off the surface .

Good advice and a good simple explanation of what primer products to use. I would add that if you do any repairs with filler , that you spray epoxy primer over the top again to seal the repair. Curiously I have heard some painters still spray a dusty coat of red oxide primer even before spraying the 2K epoxy primer. Your thought?

it will not be an issue to paint over existing paint when prepared properly, but when your paint is seriously cracked and flaking off this is the way to go, I hope.

Yep,very frustrating, I gave up on that stuff,I just Da it with 80,then 220 then after it's all feather edged,I apply 3 wet coats of 2 k primer.im done with our waterdownd strippers.

Power strip has 0.1% dichlormethane and thats the best the uk law can give on it gonna use it on my bike frame to repaint it probably the only stuff that will work and work fast since its for professionals since I said tp my friend this shit is not a plaything like the others are weak or need longer to work than normal yet if you want it to work in 15mins this stuff is tve best you can buy but the warning is on the tin lol

G'day Dave - I'm spraying a small motorcycle petrol tank and based on this video I thought I'd have a go at Epoxy Primer. So I'll Chemical Strip back to bare metal, use metal conditioner, 240 grit sand, Wax and Grease Remover and then the Epoxy Primer as described in this video. But I get a bit unsure after than. I'll be fixing a few smallish dents so I'll give the Epoxy primer a 240 grit sand and then apply some filler for the repairs. So as I'm sanding back the filler I guess there is also a reasonable chance I will also sand through the Epoxy Primer back to bare metal in some spots. What happens then? Is it OK to Epoxy Primer the whole tank again, including over the body filler? Or do I Epoxy Primer just the bare metal spots and then use a 2K Primer over the body filler, or is it OK to use the Epoxy Primer over the filler? Of course once I am happy with the repairs/filler, I realise I will be 2K priming the whole tank, but I am just unsure about what goes on during the repair process, and whether I can spray the Epoxy Primer over the filler.... Thanks for your advice. Cheers.

You can use the 2k primer hifill over the repairs only. A bit of metal showing is fine the primer will hold on.

Why do you need to sand it after stripping the paint? The previous paint clung to the surface no problem. Why would it need to be roughened for more paint if you didn’t alter it from it’s previous paint job?

DBay Boyds the metal conditioner was washed off straight away and just gets rid of any residue. It normally turns rust black. But as there was no rust it didn't turn black.

This is a great video, but I have a question. In the video something called De Ox IT, was used and said that it's the same as a metal conditioner. Hey Dave, what a great video mate. I see this video is 5 years old (about 2019), and the active ingredient in old school paint strippers :methylene chloride (MeChl), was banned in 2019. I followed the link in your video description to VG Paints, and they have it in stock, but is it the same stuff, or is it a new formula which like most modern paint strippers these days don't really work? Clear vinegar is a great acid neutralizer. You can use it straight or mix it 2 parts vinegar 1 part distilled water. It kills the paint strippers acid base pretty quick and for cheap.

One of the things that you learn in chemistry class and about the periodic table and elements is that an acid always neutralizes a base, and a base always neutralizes an acid. Being that paint stripper is the base product and vinegar being a completely different type of acid all together, it neutralizes the stripper. The main component in paint strippers is sodium hydroxide. One of the best natural sources to neutralize sodium hydroxide and stop its reaction is vinegar. Some typical acid bases include sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, ammonia water and many bleaches. All 4 can be neutralized by the acid components in vinegar. A neutralizer is highly acidic and is used to bring the alkalinity of any possible stripper residue back to neutral, hence vinegar is the cheapest method of neutralizing the main ingredient in stripper sodium hydroxide. I have used vinegar for 9 years to neutralize paint strippers. My uncle has a professional restoration shop and he has been using vinegar for 31 years as a neutralizer. Works great and it is cheap.
