Love your testing of those blades. I have several GEC blades in o-1 and 1095. I read somewhere that they try to target 58-59 HRC in 1095. They have also made some in 440c, but not many I gifted a GEC slipjoint in 440c to my father.
@curtismatsune3147Ай бұрын
The stropping shows that from a practical standpoint they both perform fine but I'd say these tests indicate that when they get really dull and need to be resharpened the Case will be easier and faster in that regard.

As far as whittling goes, if you are a beginner, try a softer wood when you first start out. Beech wood is a great option if you are not going to heavily use whatever you whittle. Just to get used to carving shapes.

Congratulations with the G.E.C. as you stated the get is more expensive. The sodbuster is a lower end case knife. Glad you get use out of both. Next time you select case hopefully youl choose carbon steel.its easier to sharpen. Anything other than carbon steel is a waste of time. Both my case knives are s.s. and not near as keen as my dads muskrat and trapper. My dad took care of his case knives. I tend to use mine as a wedge to cut maple for violin sound posts. So I'm hard on my pocket knives. Had I to do again I would try to get regular carbon steel blades. Good to know about GET ill keep an open mind. I think a strop is an excellant idea. Thanks for vidio

Mosr knives will whittle wood for a long time since its not really wear resistant. Cardboard has silica in it (its like sand or stuff in sharpening stones) so it wears away edges. Thats why in CATRA testing they use silica impregnated paper (at a higher % than in cardboard) because it wears away edges fast and its a uniform media.

👍🏼I love to sit on my porch and whittle. 😁 You could use whatever size doll rod you want to for the whittle test. Carve off an end; same for every knife. I strop on my pant leg often. It actually works for light stropping. I think that’s a grandpa thing. :) And I have to say “not for hard use” really annoys me. :) what is hard use? Batoning prying chopping? Who’s doing that with their folder?Carving wood seems like pretty hard use to me. Your putting alot of force & pressure on the whole knife at times. Slipjoints have been carving wood for a long time. Good vid as always 👍🏼:)
@doodysdaggers Жыл бұрын
Haha guess I’m just used to needing to say not for hard use because of the idiots that think you should be able to go batoning with a button lock knife. Or expect a slip joint to perform the same as a locking knife. 🤷🏻♂️ I just grab whatever knife I think will be best for the job

I’d be curious to see GEC 1095 vs rough Ryder T10 carbon steel. Case’s new carbon steel sucks. Unless it’s designated 1095 or CV, I’m personally not a fan. Their trusharp isn’t too bad
@doodysdaggers Жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea, I have a few RR. Although I’m not sure the steel. Are all RR T10?
@zero61288 Жыл бұрын
@@doodysdaggers RR offers a few different steels. Most common is 440A and T10 carbon. If they are 440, then it will say 440 razor sharp on the blade. Look up your models and see what steel they are
@SpaceDave3000 Жыл бұрын
T10 is basically 1095 but made to be a little tougher and wear resistant, but the edge retention is supposedly slightly lacking. Would be an interesting match. Most every RR is T10.

Probably about the same, but Opinels are so thin that they slice very well but aren’t very tough. Maybe I’ll do a video on it soon
@donniegray2288 Жыл бұрын
I’d say the case being a lot thinner behind the edge than the GEC had some to do with it for sure.Not that 1095 isn’t better but there’s a lot to blade geometry in cutting tests.Definately informative tho
@doodysdaggers Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah definitely. There’s a ton of variables. My tests are pretty simple. it cuts paper before, I cut some stuff, then try cutting paper after.
@donniegray2288 Жыл бұрын
@@doodysdaggersI think case needs to heat treat to a higher Rockwell that’s an issue too but it could be they want it to be easy to resharpen for the average user that is not that great at sharpening or have a good sharpener.I do wish they harder tho that means a lot in edge holding.

Definitely not O1 tool steel better than RR's T10. Both have tungsten in the steel and I'd rate it better than 1095, but Case CV and tru-sharp say that the steel hardness is 55-57 Rockwell,so good enough to peel a spud or cut a piece of string.
