“Are we getting bored yet?” I mean I’m not, there’s a much greater variety of aesthetics among traditionals,, so much more character and colour without be gaudy and they just keep looking and better as they age. Modern knives are functional, tough and from a practical stand point probably better all round but traditionals are a lot more fun and are more likely to create a sentimental attachment. We just need more companies creating GEC quality knives and when they are on their game, Case quality knives and pushing them out in the same sort of quantities as Case or Rough Rider. And then there are those gorgeous leather slips....😊

I'm glad you've found your happy place with traditional folders and leatherwork. They do have a nice aesthetic. It would never work for me though, largely because they don't lock. Also, I really value the quality of the steel in the blade. So it's the truly modern steels for me, not 1095 and the like. And I don't get Chinese-made EVER.

With all the new stuff out today it is easy to become a steel snob. I do love modern steels but prefer CV, 1095, O1, A2, and Cruwear for working knives. They hold an edge for a reasonable amount of time and are easy to sharpen. I would much rather spend a minute or 2 with ceramic rods or a strop then 20 plus minutes that a "new" steel may take after being used hard.

Cruwear is a modern supersteel ,but is very easy to sharpen. By that I mean that it sharpens quickly and the time spent sharpening is out of proportion to it's edge holding. It is truly a remarkable steel!@@acid6urns

I liked the sharpening video you did for this knife. You did an excellent job on the job edge! It was funny when you referred to the factory Case edge as burnt & crusty lol. I wish Case would take the time to refine their edges more & pay more attention to quantity control. I’m assuming they are getting better it, but I don’t know. Yesterday I bought a full size trapper in amber bone & True Sharp steel. I had to put an edge on it to make it usable for edc, but it’s good to go now!

Case edges still suck, even on their expensive models. I bought one of the Kinzua flippers, a $150 knife with an S35VN blade, a few months ago. I came with the standard dull Case edge with a huge burr. A couple weeks ago, my dad bought two Case Trappers and gave me one. This knife was cheaper, I think he paid $50 each for them, and had Case's 420HC steel. Like the Kinzua, both blades on the trapper were dull with big burrs. It is sad that Case cares so little, because when sharpened properly, Case knives are great. The blades hold a razor sharp edge. It just sucks that I have to finish the manufacturing process for them. I've never gotten a Spyderco, a Benchmade, or even a cheap Victorinox knife with a bad edge like that.

All my Cases are in CV. I have a Medium Stockman, a Muscrat and a mini Copperhead. There are less Case models in CV but you can get them easily. By the way I have a Barlow in 01 tool steel. I'm not big on slipjoint knives myself but my dad was grieving his "case dubble ecks" so I ordered him the jigged buffalo horn s35vn mini trapper (65093) and there are positive results to report. Not going to lie, I kind of want to get one too. Out of the box both clip and wharncliffe blades were surprisingly sharp, I touched it a little rougher than I should have but that's okay. They were perfectly centered. Detent and half stops were all strong. Oil was visible at the base of the blades. There were no egregious gaps on the back. Honestly it was just a handsome specimen of a knife but my dad could just be lucky. He dumped his pockets when he saw it. I have yet to ask him his opinion of the massively upgraded steel, may update later if you care to know.

Recently tried a friend’s solingen made boker (I think he said it’s a smkw special) in O1 that’s really fantastic. It looks like someone really gave a damn about the assembly and QC. It’s not on the level of like a GEC, but it’s quite nice. It seems to be done reasonably hard and sharpens nicely. The one I handled had an interesting patina but I’m not sure if that’s from use or if it was intentionally applied.

Steel snobbery is the biggest beef people have with case tru-sharp. Surprising amount of people out there who thinks there is no place for old school or budget stainless steels. Kinda sad actually since they can be used in applications that mayby a higherend stainless may not be necessary. I understand case CV isn't much different then Ka-Bars crovan 1095 steel.

The problem is that Case knives really aren't cheap. Using 420HC, one of the worst knife steels out there, is unconscionable. At least use something like 440C; its cheap but a far better steel. As much as some Case knives cost, they out to come with something like S30V at minimum.
@desertratedc9596
@desertratedc9596 11 ай бұрын
@christophercrawford777 I can upgrading to 440c but you don't want to see what happens to the price of their stainless knives if they switched all of then to a S30V or S35VN. I don't mind the price of 50 to 70 for 420HC mostly because I believe I'm paying for the handle material and the finish... fit can be iffy sometimes but definitely the bone with your choice of jigging and stag/antler I expect to cost a bit of money. If they could change to 440c though I think the price could stay similar... you also got the average blue collar that don't care about knives like we do and just buy because of the name, going to a s30 series steel may be to much. We may not see S30 as hard to sharpen but I had an older friend that was use to his 440 and 420 knives and hated how difficult it was to sharpen a Kershaw with S30V I gave him and I am sure the price would immediately double if case switched to the steel.... look at the limited edition Tony bose knives that case makes...
@christophercrawford777
@christophercrawford777 11 ай бұрын
@@desertratedc9596 I understand what you're saying. I'd be delighted if they switched to 440C, but it would be cool if they offered something high tech like S45VN (A steel I love on my Spyderco PM3) as an option. I'd pay the extra for that.

@christophercrawford777 ah then we at least agree there and may be in luck! They keep playing with S35VN and especially AEB-L and have talked about potentially releasing a line using them that would be more available then the Tony bose top line.
