The Case knife's blade seems to be shaped a little differently, flatter. The RR seems to have a little bit more "belly". That bit of curve to the blade will inherently make it a little bit better of a slicer, if the blade steels are indeed equal. Great review. Thanks.

I have found that both Case and Rough Ryder knives benefit greatly from being thinned behind the edge although Rough Ryder has an advantage for certain material such as cardboard due to differences in spine thickness and Case has an advantage in softer objects due to its hollow grind. I like both the Case large stockman in CV and the Rough Ryder classic carbon large stockman having owned both at different times, but they both have terrible edge retention.

@stevehuffman74532 жыл бұрын
Case's "CV" is a modified 1095. They added a small amount of chromium (around 5% ~ 10%?. 17% chromium is the minimum required for "stainless" steel.) along with Vandium to their 1095. "T-10" is the Chinese version of 1095, with a small amount of Titanium (less than 2%, if I remember right) added to the alloy. Something to do with improving the carbides and hardenability. Both are a good steel. I don't know for sure, but I think RR runs their T-10 a point or two higher than Case runs their CV. (Case runs their 420HC a point or two softer than everyone else, too.) For the stockman pattern, I'll take the T-10. #1, I can afford a RR more than a Case. #2, Case claims "Blade Rub goes with (the 3 blade 2 spring) Stockman pattern" and they will NOT correct blade rub issues no matter how severe, on their 3 blade 2 spring Stockman. Strange that accusation ... None of my 12 Large, 3 XL RR, Circa 1978 to 1984 Schrade+ XXL Old Timer 858 Lumberjack stockman, GEC 828318 Dixie Stockman, all of which are a 3 blade 2 spring design (the XL RR603 was $9.99 retail off Amazon, with free not PRIME shipping) have blade rub. If Rough Rider can build a large and Extra Large 3 blade 2 spring stockman --- FOR UNDER $10.⁰⁰, why CAN'T Case build one for around $80.⁰⁰ (website price, XL Amber Jigged Bone with CV blades)?!? 😳

As a mechanic, I'll say that it all depends on application. China tools are ok for occasional or limited use or for certain specialty tools like stubby wrenches(you're not breaking one of them) or a brass hammer. For heavy use tools, 'tho, they just won't hold up and you can seriously get wounded from a broken tool. I have both Case's and Rough Ryders and I will tell you there is no comparison in terms of the construction of the knives. You can easily adjust a Rough Ryder blade with an 8oz tack hammer. To adjust a Case you will need to blast it with a 16oz, or perhaps use a little finesse with a 3.5lb cross-pein hand sledge. The Case knives really are that much sturdier. For most pocket knives and users the china knife is probably going to fit the bill just fine. The Rough Ryders have a solid build quality and they are good knives. They also polish up quite easily and look phenomenal if you take the time. For heavy usage or a tough environment like a Diesel Shop or a farm, get the Case.

My conclusion after carrying both brands for several years is the Case will be the better choice in the long run. They develop less blade wobble, and are less likely to have things fall off. The handles tend to be more durable, etc. I like both brands, but you are paying for more than just "USA" and the Case tang stamp when you buy a Case. In the long run it is the better knife. But straight out the box, it is going to be very hard to prove than. But everyone needs to make their own choice and everyone has their own needs.

Props for testing carbon steel. You just don't see that very often. I've just been giving a 1920s J.Hoyland a sympathetic re-profiling. Someone in the past had, fairly, tried to shape them into at least something. I took my files out... and they didn't work. So that's why the edges were more chipped than worn! I had to resort to diamond. In hardness, the steel felt closest to a VG10 I've worked on this year. It was quite a surprise.

*The thing you need to remember about Case Knives is that with a few exceptions, nearly all major US Based Knife Manufacturers can trace their lineage back to the Case Family. The Case Family is literally the First Family of American Knives. Today they're one of the few companies that still make ALL their knives here the US. Not even the venerable Buck Knife Company can say that. Do You want to support American Jobs and benefit from Made In America Quality? You're going to have pay a little more for it. Thank that crazy idea we Americans all have that we like to have food & electricity and don't want to live in Mud Huts* *I own a lot of Rough Ryder Knives, I also own a lot of Case knives. Head-to-head, Case holds a slight advantage in construction quality. But truth is, if you don't know what to look for, you'll have a hard time spotting it. Blade Steel is basically a Push. (btw, this comparison was very arbitrary and kind of garbage), I will say that RR's QC has jumped up by leaps and bounds over the last few years, whereas Case has remained the same as it's always been. RR also offers some SERIOUS discounts on HTF grip & blade patterns that Case doesn't even offer. (Stoneworx & Candy Patterns) When was the last time Case even offered a Congress Knife?*

Is the board you cut on bamboo? If so, know that nothing will dull your knife like bamboo, because it is not ordinary wood, but wood containing a lot of silicon. That's why Japanese peasants made bamboo spears by cutting off the tip at a large angle - the edges are as sharp as a knife blade. Therefore, it is better to buy a plastic board - it does not damage the knives.

Not a very good example of the superiority of Chrome Vanadium over High Carbon steel. I wouldn't have a high Carbon tool given to me for nothing. A good test would be to put them in a vice and bend the blade and you will see the high Carbon knife shatter. Chrome Vanadium will not. It's not the cutting performance you are paying for, but toughness. However, for knives High carbon is OK as long as you use it right and don't give them too much abuse. For other tools like sockets or spanners Chrome Vanadium always. You get what you pay for.
