At first, I thought that it wasn't going to give me the help I was looking for since you started by talking about straight beds but when you showed using the same formula for landscape beds, I was very impressed. I'm worried about figuring out colors, design and placement as well. And to make it worse my flower bed is huge but it's on a fairly steep slope. I did watch a video about garden design, I don't remember whose channel it was from, that said your first step is to identify the feeling you want your garden to invoke. That will decide which garden style to pull inspiration from.

Very nicely put together video!!! I've been spending months planning my cutflower garden... this would have been helpful! 😆Erin's book really helped me. I decided on 3 foot wide beds (because I have back issues) & I did the same thing you did, I drew out beds using the spacings I'm going to be using based on the flowers I'm growing, to determine # of plants I can fit in each bed, & therefore how many to seed start... I didn't want to end up with too many plants because I'm the type of person that WILL find a place to cram them, even though I know it will just make all the plants suffer.... 🤦♀️. I went 100% no dig using the Charles Dowding method & I checked under the cardboard yesterday to see if the grass/weeds were dead & it was teeming with worms! It's not completely dead yet but it looks so good under there!

Hi Deb! It certainly can. In the case of direct sowing I will always oversow by approx. 50% - so just account for at least double the seed needed in that case. Then I will thin to what we have on the graph.

Hi Clayton! I would stick with 12x12 for zinnias. Because they can sometimes suffer from powdery mildew you will want that extra air flow. They get quite large when they branch out.

Very helpful video. I'm new to cutting flowers from the garden and did the first few last season and found that I inadvertently introduced a ton of garden bugs into the house. What do you do to free plants from bugs before you gift or sell them? Thank you 😀
@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lorna! What kind of bugs in particular are you seeing? Do you harvest in the very early morning or late evening? I have an issue with earwigs hiding in certain flowers. I use my snips (the blades) to gently wipe them out flowers in the garden. Sometimes a shake upside down does the trick as well.
@lornalorna40263 жыл бұрын
@@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardensHi Danielle. Primarily it was little caterpillar type things that dangled from a silky thread when they emerged and a few other things. I had shaken them, laid them out and hosed them but that didn't do the trick. I felt a bit embarrassed having given a hand tied bouquet to a friend that creeping things came out of the foliage. It was hydrangeas and heuchera bloom mix in the main ☺

Hello Great video!! Thank you. What is the name of the flower farm and how do we order dahlias? Thank you!
@AJTR6113 жыл бұрын
I’m planning out my garden now and am a bit confused on spacing for Dahlias. I have a raised bed 4x6’ and have 3 dahlia tubers (dinnerplate - cafe au lait). I’m local to you, and so powdery mildew can be an issue. Can you tell me how you would space these in this bed? I plan to put other flowers next to them, but I’m not sure how close I can get. If I space them 12 or 18” apart from each other...is that square? I can put other flowers one foot away, or does it need more room. Since I’m not doing rows, I’m having difficulty finding this information. Thank you!
@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tina! I'll do my best to help. I plant Dahlia's 18 -24 inches apart. In a bed that is 4 ft wide, I would put two Dahlia's wide. They get quite big and bushy over time, especially if you pinch them. I like to think of them at heirloom tomatoes - I would only place two heirloom tomatoes in 4 ft wide (especially with all the rain we receive). I would give them the full 18-24 inches to grow (and get good air flow) and not place anything within that area. I hope that is helpful!
@AJTR6113 жыл бұрын
@@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens thank you so much, that’s very helpful!
@AJTR6113 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this! I have a really... maybe dumb question... but how far in do you go from the edges of the bed? If you are spacing 9” in a 4ft bed and doing 5 across...that makes you right up against the edge of the bed, going in only about an inch and a half. Are you doing less spacing? I hope I’m not asking this in an incredibly confusing way!
@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tina! Yes, there is only about 2 inches from the edge of my bed before I have the first and last plant of a row (In the case of 9x9 with a 48 in bed). I may fudge it slightly when I go to plant - say push the sides to 2 1/2 or 3 inches, but for the purposes of planning how many plants and how to lay them out this is the formula I use. Your sides will only have a few inches before the rows begin. I won't measure in 9 inches and then start. I will measure in 2 inches (or whatever the math calls for in that particular bed) and then start. I hope that is helpful!
@AJTR6113 жыл бұрын
Yes, thank you! This is very helpful!

I just planted some zinnias per the packages instructions (benary's giant). It's my first time and the package said to plant the rows 2ft wide and 6 inches apart. Should I be worried? I've seen many people recommend 12 x 12 after I planted them. Should I thin them out to 12 inches apart? Thank you!
@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens3 жыл бұрын
Hi Adriana! We all have to find out what's best for our area, but if it was me I would thin them to 12 x 12. They bulk up and branch out, and good air flow will help combat diseases like powdery mildew.
