I have some cooked freekah (a grain I found at a middle eastern market.) that will be a good substitute. I encourage everyone to send a link to Michelle's chanel to family and friends. More people need to know how to feed themselves and their families on a budget. Grocery prices don't seem to be going down, and 70% of restaurants will be raising prices next year. I’d like to point something out. I watch many cooking channels, and inevitably in the comment section there will be people saying, “must be nice, I’m too poor to afford healthy food” or “I can’t afford the appliance you used to cook that” or some other excuse. I think it’s pretty obvious that Michelle manages to make healthy and not only affordable but downright cheap meals every week. No, you don’t need a rice cooker to cook quinoa or even rice for that matter. I’m just guessing here, but it seems Michelle can probably afford more expensive food but chooses to be creative and challenge herself to save money on food anyway. The result seems to be much healthier, tasty meals than most people eat, even the people who have money to spend.

There are lots of things that I can't afford so I don't buy them....like an InstantPot. Lots of my viewers have one, but that's a big spend for me, so I just haven't done it. Homemade Bisquick Baking Mix Ingredients: 4 cups all-purpose flour 2 Tbsp. baking powder 1 ½ tsp. salt 2 tsp. sugar ½ cup melted butter (you can use shortening if you don’t want to refrigerate your mix if you prefer) Directions: 1. In a stand mixer combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until well mixed. 2. While mixer is going slowly pour melted butter into bowl to distribute evenly. If you are using shortening, cut in the shortening. 3. Allow to mix for 1 full minute. 4. You can mix this by hand, and I have, but I find using my stand mixer gives it a more even distribution- especially the butter. This will give you more consistent results in your baking. 5. Transfer to an airtight container like a mason jar or freezer bag and store in refrigerator or freezer for 3-4 weeks. Homemade Bisquick makes 1 cup Ingredients 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon butter Directions Sift flour into a bowl; add baking powder and salt and whisk until fully incorporated. Cut butter into flour mixture using a pastry cutter until evenly combined. Tips Shortening or oil can be used in place of butter, if desired. If using melted butter, be sure to evenly disperse the butter as much as possible. BISQUICK OVEN FRIED CHICKEN 1 tablespoon butter 2/3 cup Bisquick™ Original Pancake & Baking Mix 1 1/2 teaspoons paprika 1 1/4 teaspoons salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 3 to 3 1/2 lb bone-in, skin-on chicken pieces (breasts, drumsticks, thighs) Prep. Start by preheating your oven to 425°F (218°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Next, rinse 2 pounds of chicken pieces and pat dry, then set aside on a clean plate. *Make sure to sanitize your sink! Make Breading. In a bowl large enough to dip your chicken, crack two eggs into a bowl and whisk well. Then in another bowl that will fit the chicken pieces, combine ⅔ cup of Bisquick, ¼ cup of Panko breadcrumbs, 1 ½ teaspoon paprika, and 1 teaspoon each of salt and pepper (or to taste). BREAD & BAKE THE CHICKEN PIECES 1. coat the chicken with egg then breading. 2. breaded chicken in baking dish on wire rack. 3. Bread Chicken -. Dip each chicken piece into the beaten eggs, then dip into the Bisquick mixture, fully coating the chicken. Bake. Place the coated pieces onto the prepared baking sheet and put into the middle of your oven’s center rack. Bake at 425°F (218°C) for 40 to 50 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C)in the deepest part of your thickest chicken piece. Serve. When done, remove the chicken from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. You can transfer the chicken to a wire cooling rack if desired to help keep the crispiness. Dumplings Ingredients 2 cups Original Bisquick™ Baking Mix 2/3 cup milk Steps #1. Stir ingredients until soft dough forms. #2. Drop by spoonful's onto boiling stew; reduce heat. #3. Cook uncovered 10 minutes. Cover and cook 10 minutes. tip 1. Be sure the stew is boiling when you drop in the dumplings, so the bottoms cook well at the start. Lower the heat to finish slowly cooking the dumplings completely, so they aren’t soggy and doughy in the center. tip 2. Accurately measure out the dry baking mix by spooning it into a standard dry-ingredient measuring cup, then leveling the top with a straight-edge metal spatula or knife; don’t scoop it or pack it down. This ensures the dough will be soft and just the right consistency to cook up light and fluffy rather than dense and chewy. tip 3. Stir in a couple teaspoons of a favorite dried herb or a seasoning blend into the dry mix before adding the milk, or sprinkle the dumplings with grated Parmesan cheese at the end of cooking time for a savory finish.

No additives, just my own pantry ingredients go into a quick salsa made with dehydrated peppers, minced fresh onion, dehydrated cilantro, and sometimes a little minced apple or peach. If there is leftover salsa it goes into soup or becomes salsa BBQ sauce with real sugar.

Those little peppers just look amazing!!! I look so forward to Sunday because you always upload such lovely videos and my grandson calls!! Well..hopefully he gets to call. Just depends on the drill sergeant and how evil they’re feeling😂😂. Also… chorizo is not on my list of goodies. I’ve been looking for a vegan one but can’t find it in any of my local stores. The list of ingredients in the meat version is just so gross!!😂😂 I’m not a fan of heart and lymph nodes!!

I've been using the soyrizo from Trader Joes, but I think there is another soyrizo sold in the regular stores also that is quite popular. For meat eaters, they could always do a chicken chorizo or make their own. Lots of ways to make it healthier. I'm glad you look forward to my videos!

@@ArdentMichelle exactly. I personally don’t understand adding sugar to tomato sauce to begin with 😆. This might be a preference for some I hear. At one time ketchup didn’t have sugar added.

@ArdentMichelle, you probably shop at the WinCo in Norco? Pomona is actually a few miles closer for me but it's still a little drive. I've got to weigh out the savings over the gas prices these days. It's probably still cheaper to make the drive. It's just hard to do when every other grocery store is within 1-3 miles away.😂
@ArdentMichelle3 ай бұрын
No, I never have any occasion to go to Norco so I haven't been to that one. I go to the one in Lakewood. I wouldn't make the trip just for groceries unless I was doing a big monthly shop or pantry stock up.

CHICKEN POT PIE Serves: 6 Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: over 1 hour total Ingredients: PASTRY: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. salt 1 1/2 cups butter, chilled and cut into thin slices 3 Tablespoon shortening 1/3 cup ice water Glaze: 1 egg yolk & 1 Tablespoon water to brush on top of pie Directions: In large bowl, combine flour and salt. Using pastry blender, cut in butter and shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal (work quickly so the butter does not soften). Sprinkle with ice water; rapidly blend together with a fork. Gather the dough into a ball, then flatten into a circle. Wrap in foil or handi-wrap: chill at least 3 hours or overnight. Ingredients - FILLING: 2 quarts water 1 broiler/fryer chicken(3 to 4 lbs.), cut up or your favorite chicken parts to 3-4 pounds chicken. 1 bay leaf and 1 garlic clove, minced 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen cut green beans 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced carrots 1 cup diced peeled potatoes 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 cup sliced fresh mushrooms 1 package (10 oz.) frozen peas 1 can(16 oz.)whole tomatoes, drained and chopped 4 Tablespoons butter 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup heavy cream or Half & Half 2 egg yolks Salt and pepper to taste 6 pots (4 inch diameters)washed or 1 large pot or deep dish pie pan Vegetable oil Aluminum foil For filling, place chicken, water, bay leaf, and garlic in Dutch oven. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and cook for 30-40 minutes or until chicken is tender (You can do this the night before). Remove and debone chicken; set aside. Skim fat off from the stock. Add beans, carrots, potatoes and basil; cover and simmer 12-15 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Add mushrooms, peas and tomatoes; cover and simmer 3-5 minutes. Drain vegetables and reserve stock; set aside. Melt butter in another large kettle. Whisk in flour and cook until bubbly; stir in 1 1/2 cups of reserved stock. Freeze remaining stock. In a small bowl, stir together cream and egg yolks. Whisk into the sauce; remove from heat. Season with salt and pepper. Gently fold in reserved chicken and vegetables. To assemble pot pies you can make individual one or 1 big one but it will take longer to bake, brush pot(s) with oil. Line each pot with a 15 inch x 12 inch piece of foil; pressing the foil gently down into the pot and being careful NOT to tear it. Fill each pot with about 1 1/2 cups of the filling; leave about 1/2 inch headroom; set aside. Roll pastry to 1/8 inch thickness; cut into six 6 inch circles. Place 1 circle on each pot, turn down the edges and flute the ends. Cut 3 small steam holes in the center of each pastry. In small bowl, lightly beat glaze ingredients; brush on top of each crust. Place pots on a baking sheet. Bake at 425 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until crust is browned and the filling is hot and bubbly. Place one stick with seed packet in each pot before serving.

Be aware of the air fryer using. It looks like it has materials other than metal in it. That, heated to high temperatures, creates a toxin. I would recommend that you consider getting a mid-priced Emeril lagasse. It is 69 to it is all metal so it will not create any toxins as it's cooking. Just something to be aware of as you're using the air fryer. We got one that had non metal materials in it, and we got rid of it, and bought the all metal one after I had seen the reviews on the risks of the the material risk for ones that are not all metal because of the toxins that are created when cooking at high temperatures in them.
