As a seafood restaurant owner I will say that we often run off of a pretty slim profit margin, most of the profits come from soft drinks, alcohol and stuff like that. That being said if I was to do an all you can eat seafood special, and a man like you came in, filming a food challenge that he was going to upload to his 400,000+ subscribers, I wouldn’t stop him. The publicity from it would pay back the loss 100x over. Bad move by the owner to prioritize the short term loss over the long term gain.

Michigan resident here. We have been to this restaurant only once. We were there for a special occasion and after only 45 mins and just barely finishing our food, we were told by that sane owner that we have stayed long enough and were asked to leave. I wasn't as kind as you. Unacceptable! They are a poorly rated restaurant for a reason. On a positive note, just started watching your channel. LOVE IT! Keep it up.

But ethically, it's just people trying to make a profit from a business that already has small margins (I owned a restaurant; a regular one, not a buffet), so having this guy come into their place not to enjoy a meal but to eat competitively as a professional eater, in order to get more views for his channel, doesn't feel right. I love his food challenges and he seems to be a nice guy, but this video is all wrong IMHO

So true, except I'd say it's not just 'sometimes', it's most of the time (in situations like the one Joel found himself in, or similar). I've worked behind bars and in a restaurant and most of the time it's the front of house staff that take a verbal beating when something goes wrong, even if it isn't their fault. It was very rare, where I worked, for the customer to not take it out on me when it clearly wasn't my fault.

I can see both sides of the argument. However, being an AYCE place, they would make money off 99% of people who don't eat that much and would not eat their money's worth of food, so it feels unfair to cut off the 1% who can eat large amounts of food. If you will cut people off, include a disclaimer that the offer is only valid for the first X amount of pieces and after that, you will charge X amount per piece. That way, people will be aware and as Joel says, he is often happy to pay extra. Rather than rudely cutting someone off as the owner did, the owner should have come up to Joel to explain the situation and allowed Joel a chance to say he would pay more or anything like that. Maybe next time, Joel, before you eat, talk to the manager before hand and explain the situation. Ask about any caveats such as a order limit etc. If there is a cut off limit such as 39 pieces in this instance, ask if you could pay for another sitting so you could push beyond that cutoff for another 39.

But like he stated in his video he advised the staff about him filming etc. he only spoke highly about the place and the staff there, he was no doubt going to give them free promo. I think what was really disappointing was the way the owner approached Joel. He made him feel pretty uncomfortable. He was not given the chance to explain or even given the option to pay for more food. I was in no way having a stab at this establishment ☺️ I personally think it could have been handled a bit better is all

Joel, the amount of food you can put away is simply not human. Those of us who are avid viewers are accustomed to it, but the average restaurant owner or manager probably gets a little freaked out by your seemingly endless appetite. It's great that you let them know about your mission up front, but you might consider offering to pay for two dinners when you make the initial contact. Whether they take you up on it or not, it puts the responsibility on the restaurant for whatever follows. Should keep you from getting cut off in the future. Sorry this one didn't end well, but please keep the vids coming! My stomach lives vicariously through you.

Yes he puts alot away but... 1, it's advertised as an *ALL* you can eat offer not eat until we say, so technically speaking it's false advertising, it would have taken seconds to add a disclaimer onto the offer and avoided all of this. When my son was 16-17, he could eat like nothing I have ever seen. He was thin too. We went to a Tony Romas for all you can eat rib night. They tried to use a different tactic. They would take forever to bring out an order of ribs. It ticked us off so bad, we intentionally stayed there for a couple hours and tried to eat every slab of ribs they had in stock.

There's a reason for offering all you can eat and it's not because he paid a lot of money for a lot of fish, it's the opposite. Not much money for a lot of fish. Same happened to me at ASADO Steakhouse in germany where I spent 4 hours with 2 friends of mine eating Spare Ribs AYCE. After 4 hours we were close to call it a night and have another beer when the manager asked us to leave. We offered to order another plate of ribs off of the menu for extra price + beers.. and he agreed. We even left a big tip(you don't have to tip in germany btw) since the waitress was really funny. :D
