The Phillip Schofield segment brought about the sort of belly laugh that annoys my wife (thankfully she's having a lie in and I have the lounge to myself). Actually very topical in a way: I am reminded of that clip of The One Show (a "magazine show" I am happy to report I've never watched in full) where they have to do a sudden change of topic from presumably something frivolous to the story of somebody's search for a long lost parent. Mel Brooks, who was a guest, interjects and says "what a crazy show". I think you do a great job here of tackling a very serious and sorry chapter of history interspersed with moments of light-heartedness (respectfully of course, given that the light-heartedness derives from other subject matter, like the bizarre modern day cult of celebrity). So rather than you offering Phil a job, perhaps This Morning should be offering you his job?

I love that Mel Brooks bit on The One Show! It frequently inspires me, in fact! The first time I visited Sambo’s Grave, I was suddenly struck by the horror of it: I hadn’t ever really thought about Britain’s role in it before, and the 1700s aren’t that long ago in the scheme of things. Thanks for your comments and I hope you liked the sunsets - I thought about Tweedy Outdoors when I was putting it all together. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time now before ITV are on the phone!

The worst example of that magazine format (I have experienced) I heard on Radio 4 (and recently) where a woman had just started to talk about being raped by a policeman when travelling. The topic was abruptly changed - not because of the topic, it was obviously the schedule had to be obeyed no matter what - but to talk to someone else about the theatre. Though it wasn’t deliberately offensive its effect was stupid, callous and disgusting; three of the worst things I can say about anyone.

How about Phillip's Field Boundaries? I enjoyed it again. It is still on my list to do something on ancient slavery but I'm still doubting my own eyes when I'm reading this stuff. I was reading a Greek philosopher being questioned by his students and I thought they were discussing domestic servitude but then someone says: but I have a bill of sale for the man, and the full horror strikes you.

Thanks - glad you liked it. Yes, I was similarly struck when researching Roman stuff. All the awe about the infrastructure they created - and then you remember most of it was built by people who had no freedom. Horrific, when you think about it properly.

I thought it was a trade triangle with only the Americas importing enslaved Africans. No doubt with the odd exception like Sambo owned by the Shippers etc. Another great video… 😊👍
