The most simple of these ways is by combining notes based on the intervals from which their frequencies differ. In Western music there are 12 tones in a scale which is a series of notes separated by some regular intervals resulting in the last note which is a multiple interval of the first note's frequency. The major chord which is what you might think of as a happy sound (which is culturally indicated) consists of the notes C, E, and G, for example. The frequency intervals combine in a way where the waves constructively combine and are in phase with each other. The Devil's Chord is also a chord of three notes, but it combines to give an ominous and unsettling sound.
