Thank you !! I have been watching so many videos and bought books on appliqué to learn how to do small pieces on a Christmas quilt I started years ago . The finger pressing and toothpick and cutting away as I go will change my life! Tried doing a small iron with starch and was good but not great. Thank you, thank you!!!

This was the perfect tutorial for me as I am about to appliqué letters and I’m ever so nervous about it. Great tips...and I’m so glad you did the inside of the letter. The minute I saw which letter you chose I was hoping you’d tackle the scant seam allowance at the base.Thank you, Becky.

You are very welcome! I think I'll have another video on letters in a few weeks because I want to add some to my Searching for Beauty quilt. I hope you like that one too :-).

@@ingfig1 Letters are just shapes and are handled like other small applique pieces. Use cutaway applique where it makes it easier to handle them. Always finger press edges that will be turned under and sewn. You will run into outer and (maybe) inner points and outer and inner curves and they are sewn exactly the same way in letters as they are on any other shape. You can do it :-)! I do show specifically how to appliqué letters and words in one of the lessons in my Birds in Toyland class on Creative Spark. That, and a whole lot more :-). Here's a link if you are interested: creativespark.ctpub.com/courses/birds-in-toyland

+Wendy Hansmann Always have hope! Remember that you are just sewing together two pieces of fabric by hand. Do your best, but don't beat yourself up if it isn't perfect. Have fun with your applique!

I am a beginner appliquer and also trying to do letters. How do you handle the inside of the "G" shape? Do you applique the center first, then the outside? Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Absolutely LOVE your tutorials! Thank you.
@BeckyGoldsmith
@BeckyGoldsmith 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Mark! The inside of a 'G' would be a continuous inner curve and Inner curves are not hard. Depending on the size of the G it might be small but if you finger press and take your time, it works. If the space is totally enclosed that it becomes reverse applique-but it is still an inner curve. I think this video will explain it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYqyhKWtqNSehLc Happy stitching!

Becky may I ask do you starch the fabric before you applique?
@BeckyGoldsmith
@BeckyGoldsmith 9 жыл бұрын
***** No, I don't. I lived through the starching phase many years ago and found out that I didn't like the way the fabric felt in my hands and, more importantly, I just didn't need it. I do, always, wash my fabric in the washer and dry it in the dryer. That does so many good things. If you go to my Video page, pieceocake.com/pages/videos, and look for the first link under Preparing Your Applique, you can read a lot more than I can write here. Thanks for asking!
