Wildlife Aid

5 жыл бұрын

It's the start of our hedgehog season at Wildlife Aid. Every year, we hand rear hundreds of injured or orphaned hedgehogs to return them to the wild later in the year.
Recently, it was release time for a very special hedgehog family. They had been rushed to us after mum was found with an injured foot. With no way to find foot, the family had not been doing well...
Luckily, a kind member of the public brought them to us and, after a period of rest, some food and some time to grow they were looking much better! After a final vet-check, they were taken back to where they were found and set free once again. Good luck!
PLEASE DONATE - Just £3 from every viewer can help us save many more animals! Online: bit.ly/wafdonate Text Donation: Text WILD3 to 70300 to give £3.00, (WILD5 to give £5.00 and WILD10 to give £10.00) UK residents only.
Thank you for your support!

So cute! My mum is also caring for wild hedgehogs. She‘s living near a forest and so she put up little houses for the hedgehogs, which are also heated during winter and colder seasons. And she‘s making daily fresh food for them to help support them. :)

They should hibernate during the colder months. Providing heating may be doing them a disservice.

A perfect rescue as they are so precious .I do think they should have full protected status.I read that there numbers were around 30million in the 1950:s and has dropped to around 1.5 million now .. Cars / traps and pesticides I guess .So you did a great deed making sure these got a second chance .Beautiful inoffensive animals ..*
@wildlifeaid
@wildlifeaid 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, they have suffered a 96% decline in population since the 1950's! Sadly it's a combination of cars, pesticides and people deciding to wall off their gardens! :(

Vast swathes of English countryside lost to ugly identikit rabbit hutch housing estates does not help, either. Nor does the use of molluscides (snail and slug killer) made from synthetic chemicals. If I see a slug on my plants at night, I simply pick it off and throw it over into the adjacent field, where hedgehogs sniff for food at night. Rodenticide is probably harmful to hedgehogs if accidentally ingested. If rat bait has the capacity to cause rats and mice to experience a cruel and lingering death through uncontrollable bleeding (rodenticide's mode of action is by preventing blood from clotting, hence the poor rat or mouse slowly bleeds to death by blood loss), then I see no reason why it can't do the same to hedgehogs (and other wildlife such as owls) if accidentally ingested.

Hedgehogs are so cute, we got a couple living down the shrubby area at the side of our flat. We put some food and water out for them each night.

I guess you don't believe in survival of the fittest. The reason we don't feed wild animals is because they may become reliant on humans; something that eventually will harm them. It may be either due to falling prey to sickness or hunger because they relied on humans to feed them, or it may cause interactions which is dangerous for both the animal and humans. The best is to just leave the animals alone and appreciate them from a distance. If it's harmed, call wildlife services and it's their problem after that. The only time we should help animals is when they're injured or stuck due to human actions, direct or indirect such as getting stuck in a piece of pipe, fence or getting hit by a car.

Yes, but hedgehogs are an endangered species. Helping them alleviates the effect we have on them.

Little cuties. 🦔 There's a lot scurrying about in the summer/autumn in my neighborhood. My mother's dog completely ignores them when I take her for an evening walk, probably having lost interest in them, after having met one in the garden and got her little snout too close. 😉

When I had dogs, would go walk them in the evening and they would find every hedgehog the could to play with them, no they never hurt them , they were just very curious about what thoses prickly things were. .. I would gently pick them up and put them under a bush whilst telling my dogs to leave them alone . Strangely enough, the dogs listened and let them be . Beautiful memories I must say . Thanks alot for what you do for all these animals, Hugs to you Dear Simon and the whole staff ! Take care .
