Hedgehogs are, sadly, becoming an increasingly rare sight in the UK, but this family got quite a shock when they found this one trapped in their front garden!
The unlucky hog had managed to fall down between a fence and a wall and could not escape. Luckily, Simon's 'hedgehog extraction tool' came to the rescue and he was able to gently lift the hedgehog to safety.
With no injuries and a full belly, it happily trotted off back to its home!

So admiring of Simon being an active and kind adult, encouraging the interest from the kid and letting him be involved in the process! Such a great way to educate and share an appreciation for wildlife in a way that benefits wildlife and humans simultaneously 🥰 modelling very good patience and kindness!

yep! I do see hedgehogs near my area (I've actually met two face to face, but it seems only once a year or so), one of them was an individual spiky ball of cute where my mum and her work colleague helped rescue a tiny hedgehog that was getting too close for comfort with the road, so they picked it up and took it to my house as behind our house is a nature reserve, so we thought it'll be best to take it to the nature reserve so it's at least safe! the other one was a fairly big hedgehog that was in my garden, which questions me how it found its way in, but I don't mind! it was a nice sight to see ^^

Did I catch you suggesting leaving water in the garden for the wildlife? :-) It's been dry for several years here in Czechia. We've been leaving a bowl out this year - mostly we saw sparrows at it, no hedgehogs that I know of, but there were definitely also lizards...

The Czech Ornithological Society (which seems to be increasingly gaining traction in wildlife-care circles in recent years because they do a lot of practical things people can participate in) has kept reminding people to do it on their Facebook page. Some people mentioned they can't leave it on the ground because they have cats around, so it mostly serves birds; but we're able to keep it close to the ground for everyone to use! I'm wondering, have you ever done any videos in that vein, i.e. a sort of "wildlife first aid for laymen", the sort of thing one can do in one's everyday life, like the above? I know a lot of advice is scattered in your videos, and it occurred to me that maybe, with your experience, you would be able to compile a sort of checklist-video or videos of things to do and things to avoid to prevent the most common mishaps. From my own experience, when one is a town-dweller with a liking for wildlife but little practical knowledge, such suggestions that help one do one's own part are absolutely fantastic. You do have a lot of followers and now also abroad (see: me), so you could reach a pretty big audience with that, and people could share it on social networks etc. A random tidbit: There's a Czech smartphone app that should help call the nearest wildlife aid station if you find an injured animal - I think it was developed by some IT students. If such a thing doesn't exist for UK or other countries yet, I'm throwing it out here for people to pick up on.

Yay, you fed him!! I always wish you would feed every animal before letting it go. Like when you relocate a swan, and just leave him on his own in an unfamiliar location to fend for himself. I think why can't you just toss a few handfuls of oats or whatever they eat into the water? So, great job again! Keep it up!
@wildlifeaid
@wildlifeaid 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! We always try to feed if needed, but allowing an animal to eat in a highly stressful or very weak situation can actually have a negative effect. We always try and make sure everything is calm and the animal is not overly dehydrated or collapsed when we give support feeds :)

I start school tomorrow, and I have to say this summer holidays were fantastic! It's beautiful to still have a lot of wildlife in heavy human-modified Countries like Italy ( but sadly not all animals thrive: yesterday an endangered Egypitian Vulture was shot in Sicily). I saw these animals for the first time in the wild: 1)Barn owl- in an abandoned house in the countryside in Ginosa (a small town in Apulia) 2)Griffon Vulture- on the Appenines 3)Raven- on the Alps 4)Carrion Crow- On the Alps (In Italy we have Hooded Crows so it's rare to see a Carrion one here) 5)Alpine Marmot- On the Alps And yesterday at a rescue center I know here in Apulia a young Italian Wolf was taken in! Unfortunately he has severe mange so let's hope all goes well. Have a great day!!
