OMG! I love this little flute! If you've ever wanted to try something different to your standard tin whistle, this really could be the way forward. This is the perfect partner for improvisations and plays just like your pennywhistle. Be sure to check Erik out on KZbin for more sound samples. I hope you enjoy the video showcase. x

Very pretty Stephanie. I have tried and tried to master the Irish tin whistle, though I have Eric's bamboo medium bamboo transverse Arabian flute,and have done so much better. I believe that I will just continue on with my Arabian flute. I also believe that the bamboo Arabian flute is naturally tuned to the 432 hz. So I will stick to it. It is a beautiful exotic and melodic scale, you can let your imagination go. Great video and God bless you,John...

You can play the same scale on a normal tin whistle: starting from the F#, skipping the A note, replacing it with an A# (xoxxxo). You need also to replace the E with an F, by half-holing the F#. Ornaments can be trickier in the beginning, but it is worth it. So, on a D Whistle you can play an F# "Arabian scale" : F# G A# B C# D F f#. Another easier option is this: F# G A# B C# D E f#. No half holes, and it's called phrygian dominant

I have one of his Japanese flutes and visually copied one of his full size Arabian flutes and got it right, out of a furniture grade plastic tubing, and it sounds awesome, but I like the high pitch of this small one that you're playing and I was so glad somebody made a tutorial without a lot of sound effects so I could hear the thing wnd consider whether I want to try making one on a smaller scale. Thank you so much and it was beautiful just like the player. You truly are a cutie pie. I'm grateful and blessed be.

Very nice! Thanks for the review. I can't get one where I live without paying an additional 40% on top of the msrp, so I just went to the hardware store, screen shot the flute, used power-point to measure the proportions, drilled the holes and slapped on my penny whistle mouthpiece. The result was very pleasing and quite similar (though I can't quite reach the top of the second octave due to my rough measurements). It cost less than 10 cents; a dime whistle :). I'm sure the $200 dollar version is much much better in terms of tonality and play-ability, but a nice way try before you buy.

I was playing the small one last summer with my window open and people walking by kept looking around trying to find where the lovely music was coming from :) I have a couple of his carbon pennywhistles as well (D and Bb), such great instruments. This whistle comes with this awesome Stephanie, reviewing it... Speaking of Arabian, alot of Bagpipes are actually made now a days in Arabia and they make some good ones. So, I am not hesitant on purchasing instruments made in other places, and even some of my Ocarinas are made in Taiwan. Dont know where my whistles, other then my Faedog, are made from. After all, the Whistle is a world wide instrument. Its just that the Irish play it the most. It is to them as the guitar is to America, the most popular instrument.

I just got a whistle from Erik for Christmas and I LOVE, LOVE IT!! This is so awesome because I was just going to send you a suggestion to try one of his flutes! I bought the carbon fiber whistle in D. So glad you discovered Erik's flutes. The flute has great volume and tone. And easy to reach the upper octaves. It took a few days for me to get used to the flute because I am used to the feed dog size and smaller mouthpiece. But, the adjustments needed in breath produce a superior sound. Erik's flutes exceeded my expectations! I can't wait to get an Arabian flute too!

I've played this for about 6 months now and it really is as simple as it seems. Pick it up, play a scale and wow. The the biggest difference with this whistle is your brain. You do need to take a break before switching to another instrument in a different key. When I put this down and pick up my tenor whistle it's so different, that's easy. But going to the vanilla whistle in C and it's confusing to the ear and the mind, if I don't take a break. But this is my favorite and none of the music coming out of it is contaminated by other tunes I may know - it's all freeform improv :)

Ha! This is true on all my Exotic scales. But if you do this from the root note of the major scale you are simply playing the major scale. For the major scale to sound exotic i start on the second note and go up and down.Thus you are in minor (I also half hole the top note) and for me has a more Celtic vibe.

Erik The Flutemaker you are quite right. It wasn’t meant to disrespect you. You are actually one of two people on KZbin who got me started on playing and simultaneously making/tuning my own flutes... and I am still married after the torture that must have produced! But after all the these years I still have trouble going up and down the scale in a meaningful, room filling way without becoming repetitive. I seem to lack that natural, More or less free flowing instinctive element most of the time.

Hi, I don't have this whistle to hand at the moment (it's at home but I'm not) but it's not a large whistle at all, very lightweight too. Maybe about 30-35cms. You'd definitely need to use your pinky finger to cover the last hole and have a decent bit of flexibility/coordination with it, but other than that, it's not challenging to play. 😊 Oh, and the bottom note sounds like B, again I'll get back to you on that 😂 the website had it listed as 'C Arabian' eriktheflutemaker.com/collections/carbon-fiber-exotic-scales-whistles/products/arabian-penny-whistle

All well but $158.00 ? Isn't it a little overpriced ?
@CutiepieTinWhistle
@CutiepieTinWhistle 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. I guess it depends on the cost of the materials, the time it takes to make the instrument, the skills required to do so, the profit needed to make it all worthwhile, the quality of the end product, how many are available. Each whistle maker decides their price for a reason, but it's certainly at the higher end of the price scale.

Erik is hosts a ministry which provides for impoverished people in some struggling countries. This is a worthy and admirable endeavor. I suspect the pricing of his instruments helps fund the ministry.

soslothful I just wish he would support the impoverished people in the USA. There are plenty of people here (such as the swamps of East Texas/Louisiana, as well as the Appalachians, and probably other areas, as well. No need to travel to find needful people. He does, indeed, make some sweet-sounding instruments! I plan to buy his alto sax. NICE sound!

@@charlies1550 I don't know Erik, so don't know his motivations for choosing one focus for charitable work over any other. One might say we are a global community and there is need everywhere. It would be interesting to have Erik join this conversation.

The scale is called, ahava rava. I've often wondered if Erik buys the head joint from Susato.

There will be in a few days time. I'm traveling at the moment and can't edit the video settings. BUT there are links at the end of the video and during the video to Erik's KZbin channel and you should find his website with a very simple Google search 😉

Arab music is made up of maqams (a kind of rift but its not oh well), and micro tones, basically the notes right between where the # and b of western music is. To our western ears arabic and middle eastern music sounds out of tune but it is not.
