Got my egyptian flute in yesterday.. And it transports me.. It feels like the flute is playing me, guiding me. It brings me in such a trance. Thank you for this wonderful instrument, a real piece of art!

Just ordered this flute, my first ever flute, and i'm so excited to receive it and learn to play it! I am born in eastern Europe, but I've always felt this attraction deep in my heart to egypt and this music, and finally I decided to stop searching for this music to listen to, it's even hard to find exactly what I like, so instead I decided why not make it myself? Thank you Erik, I can't wait to play it!

Eric, please help! can't decide between your Egyptian and your Oriental flute..... Could you make a short demo of their sounds side by side, or try to describe their main differences in tone and handling? I have some flute experience, and just basic western music theory understanding, not more. I am starting to learn the frame drum so thats why I am interested in more exotic sounds, like middle eastern rythms and sounds, or oriental, too... TIA!
@ErikTheFlutemakerCom4 жыл бұрын
Hi Christina. The Egyptian Flute like the Oriental have 4 top holes and a thumb hole. The holes on the Oriental a further apart which is comfortable when covered by skipping the middle finger especially on the upper part of the flute.. The Oriental is wider giving a rich tone. That said, the real difference is in the scale. The Egyptian very moving, like an ancient story is being told. Mysterious and enchanting. Very mideastern. I really like both. The Oriental also very meditative with an Asian feel. I own many of both. Picture yourself playing both and get the one that excites you the most for now. Regards, Erik

What is the difference between the egyptian and arabian flutes?
@ErikTheFlutemakerCom5 жыл бұрын
Hi Norman: They both have a very Mideastern feel but the notes and scale are different. The Arabian has a pinkie hole, the Egyptian has a thumb hole. Hard to really answer you. Erik

Hey Erik! I'm a guitarist in the states and I'm looking into wind instruments as to try something new, duduk was my first choice but then I heard the ney which was equally beautiful to me and now I have stumbled across your channel! So my question to you is what key is this specific flute tuned to? And are there multiple tunings to choose from? Because I would like to have a flute to use in creating my own music with, thank you in advance!
@ErikTheFlutemakerCom4 жыл бұрын
HI, the Ney and Duduk are very hard instruments to begin with. I make my Modified Egyptian Flute in D and D# But many are also tuned to themselves. When you order you can ask for a concert tuned one. Regards, Erik

Hello! I want an Egyptian flute, but what is its scale? What notes does the video flute give?
@ErikTheFlutemakerCom3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrea: It is inspired from the Egyptian Ney. But I modified or simplified it by pulling out 2 holes as they did not resonate with western harmony. So I call it My Egyptian Flute. My master flutes that I make them from are in D and in D#. I try not to publish my scales because of competition in building them. Kind of like Coco Cola not publishing their recipe. If you get one I will be happy to share the scale with you. Erik

Egyptian flute "Nay" is one of the most difficult yet beautiful tradtraditional instruments. It doesn't have a "mouthpiece". Eric has cheated a bit 🤣 when he used a hole to creat the sound. In the original Egyptian Flute "Nay" you produce the sound by blowing in a certain angle towards the bevelled edge of the end opening of the bamboo tube. You change tune by covering the holes either completely or partially. You can change the whole octave by changing the speed of air you blow or by partially uncover the back hole. The type of nay that does not have a back hole is called "Kawala"
@ErikTheFlutemakerCom3 жыл бұрын
Hi Fayez You are correct. That is why I mention in the description It is MY Egyptian flute and explain my experience with it. in another description I wrote Inspired by an Egyptian Ney and modified to a much easier side blown flute. This is one of the most powerful exotic flutes I make. In seconds of playing it captivates the heart and rewires the brain. A dramatic flute with 4 holes on top and one in back. Said to be about 5,000 years old. Available at www.eriktheflutemaker.com/Egyp...

Most beautiful flutes, but nearly impossible to play!
@ErikTheFlutemakerCom Жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony: Impossible if you pucker. A soft grin, press the flute against the lower lip, look in mirror to make sure you are creating a line not a hole. Work only with the mouthpiece before jumping into the holes. Hold flute by the blow hole to get good at making sound. On my website there are articles that help the blowing at eriktheflutemaker.com/pages/questions-for-the-flutemaker#help_blow You can do this! Erik
