TOP TIPS TO IMPROVE BREATHING WHEN PLAYING TIN WHISTLE

There is no easy way to explain how to create a fast or slow air stream since it relies on tongue placement inside your mouth. I struggled with this concept when teaching recorder to 8 and 9 year olds in my music classroom. I had to figure it out quickly or I would have gone deaf with 25 recorders all playing at the same time! Placing your tongue low in your mouth will “warm up” your air stream. Placing your tongue high in your mouth with “cool off” your air stream. The is important to note that it is the back of your tongue that moves to warm up or cool off the air stream and not the tip of your tongue. Moving your tongue “forward” or “back” is another way to think about it, which is what I do. When I want to “push the tone higher” I move my tongue forward. When I want to “pull the tone lower” I move my tongue back. You can experiment with this by starting on a low note on your whistle and then push the note to the higher octave by moving your tongue up and/or forward. Manipulating the air stream is the key to playing every “wind” instrument. You do great work on this channel and I bought a LIR based on your recommendation. Thank you!

Pls have a look at my comment, it'll tell you how to take a really good breath, I'm a semi professional flute player, you need to support from your stomach and your core, if you push with that and use it to support your air you will get better drastically including volume and consistency, you'll be able to hit all the notes easily, and if you support properly, you will use less air

Good video and advice. I can practice a lot because i just like doing it. I learnt the piano, and guitar doing the same thing. I just kept at it even though i got frustrated, barre chords anyone. I look at it like this time will always pass, that means days, weeks and years. So if i practice i will still have time passing but with caveat that i learnt something new. I normally go through phases with entrustments, i.e. guitar one week or piano the next or both the same week etc. I have the whistle on my pc desk so i just pick it up at any time. Oh did the same with the Ukulele, but i lost interest but my son loves it. I never let any one hear me play, i do not it for myself and I never post my playing on line. Social media is nasty and you get people out there who just want you to fail regardless. Thanks for the advice.

I have a problem with breathing when playing the tin whistle. It feels like I‘m holding my breath when I play. I try to take in breaths when indicated in my tutorial, but often there doesn’t seem space in my lungs. So at the end of a phrase, I will expel a bunch of air so I can take a breath. I actually get very winded when playing the tin whistle. A point in the video that I wonder may be related to my issue is whistles that have a low air requirement, which leads the individual feeling they have too much air most of the time and not knowing how or when to expel it. I play the Shush a lot, but also the Clarke Sweetone. I‘ll have to see if my breathing challenges differs between the whistles.

For actual woodwind players: yall don't need that much air For the rest of you: you need to breath from YOUR STOMACH and SUPPORT W YOUR STOMACH this will improve your control, if you don't know what I mean by that, put your hand on your stomach and blow out all the air in your lungs and I mean absolutely all of it Hold for 3 seconds, you should feel very desperate for air Let yourself breath in naturally ans you should feel your stomach and back expand outwards, THAT is how you breath If you support with your diaphragm n push from your stomach, you'll find you can control and get through any whistle playing, you'll be able to play for ages on a whistle that requires no air, tldr it all about your stomach support from your stomach and you don't need any "lung power"

Yes! That's precisely what I'm trying to get across :) a lot of woodwind players I've spoken to actually really struggle with tin whistle because of how LITTLE air they need. It's all about learning to control how you use your air!

I've just started playing my Clarke Celtic (sweettone) during all of this quarentine mess. I find that once I have been playing for a while especially in the higher notes I find it hard to get the low notes to sound nice. They get a kind of rattle sound to them. Do you think this is too much breath or too much moisture building up? Thanks!

Hi, sorry, I don't get comment notifications anymore so I often miss comments below videos :( yes, too much air!! :) It's likely because you've been putting more air in for the high notes and you're over-blowing on the low notes without realising. Happens to us all. It'll improve with practice :)

@@tonim001 you've certainly answered your own conundrum right there. You might want to consider a while with a greater air requirement. There are a few other toys to keep in mind that might help in the mean time: - if you don't need to take a breath, don't take one 😊 - start a tune without taking a breath - open the edges of your mouth a little to expel excess air either side of the whistle mouthpiece if you feel you have too much I hope this helps - happens to us all from time to time and with certain whistles. x

I haven't thought about it, though I imagine larger holes could potentially add to a whistle requiring more air...that's just a guess though. I think generally, most of the air requirements in whistles are dictated by the mouthpiece and overall whistle size.

@@vancass1326 the length of the whistle body affects the overall pitch of the whistle. Short bodies play higher sounds, long bodies play lower sounds. The size and position of the holes determines the notes the whistle plays.

This is my biggest issue and I am the MOST grateful for your instruction! Hey, quezzie overload, I'm looking into C whistles as I absolutely love the sound. So many options though! If I may take your opinion as it's super valuable to me, which sound do you prefer out of Feadog, Clarke Sweetone, or Walton? They're the cheap ones I know but money. Also, tin or Nickel? Hi Stephanie, thanks for the video. I've been looking around for more tips on how to play quietly and I've been wondering if anyone has tried to put some kind of muffler over the air hole. I know some people shrink the size of the hole (like you suggested with blue tack) but I was wondering if you put some kind of cloth collar over it if that would work as a sound dampener without changing the pitch. Have you ever seen anything like this?

Im not stephanie, but I did buy the warbl which is totally silent. Although it did cost as much as a high end whistle , its worth its weight in gold. I live in a packed apartment building with ultra thin walls, and I have been able to play non stop. I have made at least a years progress in just a couple weeks.

Thanks for the videos. I've been watching/ learning from you for a while now. I run into a problem in that my whistle sometimes sounds "breathy" and some times cracks when I am trying to play upper octave notes. I stop to make sure my fingers are in the right place but it still sounds weird. Someone suggested it is because it is a cheap whistle. I bought mine for 10 USD. Does a higher price whistle really make that much of a difference? I watched you whistle comparison video but still have questions.

Cheaper whistles do tend to have a few crackly notes, especially the higher you go. I shouldn't worry about it too much :)
