Thanks for posting. The Zippo my dad carried for half a century dates to 1948-50. And it looks like it - finish mostly gone, a few dents and dings. But, it fires right up every time! I’m glad to have it and the memories attached to it.

Thanks for this! I have a Zippo which appears to never have been fired, with flame box & booklet included. The box has yellowed with age, but otherwise all in very good shape. Thanks to your video I know it's from 1974, so I was 2 years old when this was made! Very cool.

My brother recently went to Pennsylvania and I gave him my zippo to take with him. Bc he was going to be right by the zippo outlet. I don't know what the insert was I gave him, but it seemed off when he brought it back. There was nothing wrong with the insert, I just needed the hinges tightened up. When he brought it back, it felt... Off... This was a zippo I had used, day in and day out for a long time. Now I see the insert is now from March 2016. I'm not sure when the insert I gave him was from. But now I'm a little pissed. 2016 insert with a 1971 case?! Fuck!

If you tell them you want to keep the original insert they will give it back to you or fix it up for you. But you gotta request it.

I'm not into collecting, but I've found you through your old video from 2011, I think, Have Flint, Wick, gas but my zippo not lighting. My issue was different then what you described in those videos. Apperantly if you tighten the screw too much on flint it won't light up either. I did everything from your video then cleaned mine up and I forgot to put the screw all the way back in and it started working flawlessly :D

I have a small collection. Mostly US NAVY. I have a Trader Horn model from a discount store that is not around any longer. They always had Zippo lighters at a 20% discount. When they went out of business, the discount was 50% or more. I got a Hollywood star edition and it is still in the original package. I don't smoke but just loved the lighters. I enjoyed your information.

I learned today my Zippo was made in May of 2013. I go to flea markets from time to time, will dang sure be looking for vintage Zippo's. Never even thought about this stuff. Thanks Brother for your video.

My dad died when I was 17. I don’t collect zippos (I may though) His zippo is one of the few items I have from him. It’s your basic no frills standard zippo. I need to get it working again. I’m going to date it though. Has to be pre ‘96. I assume 80’s or early 90’s. Edit: It’s post ‘81 pre ‘95 so far. This has an A to the left and a V to the right. I’m assuming that means 1989! This is so cool! Thank you for the video. His lighter means so much to me and something I can use .. 22 years to the day last Wednesday. Never gets all that much easier. Especially when you have a son of your own and he asks about the strange guy in photos and your memories flood back and want to do everything your dad did with you. He had a cheap folding camping knife I can’t find. I’m so bummed. Knives and zippos... one of the few things he had left. How funny is that.

Peter E. You could take it to an engraving shop and have them put something on it real nice like a saying they have many many things they could put on a blank Zippo box I have one of those old aluminum cigarettes case's that would hold a soft pack of cigarettes I don't know how many people offered to buy it off of me over the year's I can imagine how much it's worth now that smoking is band almost everywhere now it's just a collectors item now because they don't make to many cigarette related item's any more so anything you find related to smoking people are looking to pick it up and buy it even old magazines that show people smoking match books with advertisement

Thanks for posting this. Very informative. I've got an old Zippo that's been in the family since WWII I think, but it's not the crackle finish. I heard the crackle finish was from the Pacific arena. Not sure of that. Based on your video, I'm thinking mine is from 43-48, but how do you really get the exact year ? Are these earlier Zippos always gonna be an "estimate " of the year ? Also, my ancestor somehow attached a German Deutsch mark onto the side. Will this increase or decrease its value ?? Thanks again for this video !

Very interesting video! I like this. I have my Uncles - he was a Vietnam vet and had a zippo engraved with his service. My Dad died in service when I was a child and long story short, I grew up at my aunt and uncles. He gave me his zippo for my 17th birthday and I'd always wondered how you can find a date for those. I'm older (rounder and greyer😂) now and still have it today. Had a smoke outside tonight and it works perfect. Very informative video! Nicely done. Thank you 🫡 ✌️

Dear friends.pls anyone to answer me this for some series of Zippos...(sorry for my english),sooo When holding the lighter on your left hand and the hinge is left, When you rise up to read this name it's upside down. But when you hold it in your right hand the hinge is the to the right, and look down from below the name you read correct. It is not upside down These lighters are for the left-handed and the right ones ???? Do you know why you are like this? I have 42 in my collection and the half is like this zippos.... And some that I have is collectible???in the end of zippo the smal R is above the zipp(o) and to some that I have the (R) is in bottom of the zipp(o)...thanks. Pls let me know.best regards great video.

Christos Kyriacou I've wondered what that's about, too. I assume they stamp the bottoms before they braze or weld on the hinges, and aren't particular about which way the case halves go into the brazing/welding jig since they're symmetrical and will function the same way regardless of which direction they're facing. I have Zippos that go both ways, some from the same month and year.

The newer zippo inserts have a bulge on to sides. Because the older inserts was a tight fit and some locked up all together and very hard to remove. The inserts with the rib or bulge are made a little thinner to prevent a stuck insert.

Only what im thinking now to send it for service need clean case a bit i want that it looks shiny as new!! Always use genuine petrol and accessories then this lighter never die. Trust me 16yrs its a long time. Dont waste money to try other cheap fuel or wick, flints. Fuel smell as fuck< wick burnout i cant say about flints never tested them. If You get Zippo spend just bit more to enjoy best lighter on the market with lifetime warranty....

I've just bought a Zippo on Ebay...it's listed as "early 70's" - the logo is right, but there's no dashes...there's 4 dots - logo - 4 dots...there IS a patent number (rather than "patent pending" being stamped on it anywhere) - is it actually a late-1958? Did they gain/start using a patent number/change the stamp they were using that year? (looks like an internal 5-barrel hinge if that helps...I've not received it yet so don't know if the insert could've been replaced and put into the older casing back in the early-70's or not...)

As a clueless stoner 17yr old in the late 80s,, I remember some hippy dude telling us all that the letters on the insides were the actually the grade of the Zippo ie A being the top draw and K the worst. Like idiots, we all believed him. Only took 30yrs to learn the truth.

Not a collector; but my oldest Zippo was from one of the Marlboro givaways - it has no rebate on the bottom of the case and it is stamped "1989" - I have another from one of the later giveaways which has the X (possibly XI, it isn't easy to read) so the date does work out. I don't know why it differs; but there are obviously some wierdnesses about...

My Zippo has no such date markings. It is a flat bottomed regular sized one. The bottom is marked: '1932 ZIPPO 1983' in the top row and the bottom row simply reads 'BRADFORD, PA'. No other markings at all except 'Solid Brass' inscribed on the lid. It has a 5 barrel inside hinge. I assume it is not a fake since Zippo fixed the hinge 3 times by now. I acquired it in Italy in 1984 ie I swapped it for a mixtape with a girl whose family owned a major tobacconists in Rome.

Thanks. I have an old mint Zippo that my dad had for some reason. He never used it. It's from 1971. But it has a lame picture of 4 poodles on it.

I'd love to collect Zippo's but here in Europe they're really expensive, like used ones go anywhere from 10€, and new ones only start at 25€. If you want a new lighter with an interesting design, you'd have to pay around 60€...

I found this zippo at a yardsale and paid 2 bucks for it. It's an eagle on a raised face. I'm trying to find out if it's worth more then just the price for a new zippo. Unfortunately I can't even find the lighter on Google. Is there a site that have ALL zippo lighter?

Hi cutlerylover. I have a zippo lighter from your video I worked out it is a 1966 model. The question I have is the zippo has R.A.A.F. VIETNAM on the case with a ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE emblem. I am just trying to find out what it is worth. I have researched it for some time and still am unable to find anything like it. Let me know your thoughts. I'm happy to sent pictures if needed. Thanks

Sorry to hear your Titanium is no longer with you. Were you ever on the page ZippoTricks.com? I won the contest for "The One" move trick. I got a Titanium Zippo from the gift shop at the factory as my prize. My username was Cha-Ching, because that's what you would hear as you went for a smoke and you'd see my flame at the ready. Definitely bring the tricks out! Thanks for your videos.
